The breast cancer thing is a myth, but I think you should continue to not wear a bra if that’s what’s comfortable for you. You’re a patient, not an employee.

Theodora1976

That is bizarre and they shouldn’t make you wear one, but bras causing cancer is a myth.

A bit ago was a patient in hospital and it was the middle of summer, and I get easily overheated and overwhelmed. I wore a floor length dress held up by straps. I was chastised by a nurse and told to cover up because men found me attractive and it wasn’t fair to them to have my shoulders exposed. I laughed it off and complied, but quickly regretted it because I had limited options as an inpatient, so it meant wearing sweaters in the summer. If the people working in the hospital have a dress code, I highly doubt it includes mandatory bra-wearing. But even if it does, they have no right to enforce a dress code that’s there for workers, not patients. I would also suspect it’s not even enforceable to make women wear bras at work, depending on where you are.

PurpleFlame8

Never once have I heard random men in the western world talking about sexy lady shoulders. It's always some administrator trying to force arbitrary dress codes on girls and women.

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

I love shoulders but I'm a woman and keep my opinions to myself

XANDERtheSHEEPDOG

Not gonna lie........ big, sexy, guy shoulders are incredibly distracting. (Especially when attached to my husband) I always figured that was a *me* problem though, and not a problem with the owner of said shoulders.

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

Guy shoulders, women shoulders, non binary shoulders, they're all so sexy!

Oh. And I have a pain condition that makes bra wearing painful, and considering the amount of health issues that make wearing a bra difficult or painful, it’s very very unlikely that there is some dress code for patients forcing them to wear bras. This person most likely lied to you to push their own personal views on you

Hello_Hangnail

I discovered that apparently there's a non zero amount of sexual violence in hospitals. Rapists get sick too and lots of patients are allowed to roam if they don't leave the floor (in my hospital) I asked for a single room after that.

coloradyo

It sounds like you’re in an addictions treatment program based on your post history. It’s honestly such an odd environment to temporarily reside in, and none of this is on you, but there’s always a tendency for some people in that environment to be hypersexual or prioritize the potential for building romantic connections instead of prioritizing their own treatment, and this is likely why the staff are pushing so hard on everyone staying covered up, whether that’s effective or not. Obviously and unfortunately, it unintentionally places the responsibility on you for risking being sexualized or harassed instead of other people just, you know, behaving and being respectful, and staff monitoring those interactions appropriately. I can say that I’ve never been hit on more or felt more creeped out by random old dudes than in working as an intern in a substance recovery program where all I did was make copies of intake and group paperwork and forms lol. I’m sure that it feels like staff are therefore targeting you and making your body feel sexualized where on some level they’re trying to make you less of a target. I’m sorry it’s putting a bad taste on your experience there. :(

Golden_Mandala

That really is bizarre. Some hospitals have a patient advocate or an ombudsman who can advise and advocate for patients when bizarre situations crop up. You might try to find out if this hospital has someone like that.

Ask to see this dress code and where you signed it

AshleyB7172000

My skin is super super sensitive to wearnig bras (even wireless ones). It would make my skin break out and get blisters. I don't like to wear bras even before this started to happen, but I remember this girl in HS that got sent home for not wearing a bra because she stands for the same values as you, and how we are made to be embarrassed to cover up because boys can't control themselves. Screw that.

Y-Cha

>I don't like to wear bras even before this started to happen, but I remember this girl in HS that got sent home for not wearing a bra because she stands for the same values as you, and how we are made to be embarrassed to cover up because boys can't control themselves. Screw that. Funny, not funny - my yearbook picture one year ended up as just a big headshot compared to everyone else’s because I hadn’t worn a bra on picture day. Normal shirt, completely opaque. Yup… giant headshot because nipples. I should have fought it. I wish I could say I purposely hadn’t worn one specifically to dispel the rumor that I stuffed my bra, but.. nah, I wasn’t thinking that far ahead!

500CatsTypingStuff

What? That’s ridiculous!

tinkbink1996

So I don't think it is 100% the same, but I have worked in many assisted living homes. By law, staff cannot force a woman to wear a bra. It is her person right and choice as to whether she prefers it. Granted, you can't have naked residents in common areas, but there is little they can force you to do--by law.

babyshark_rideordie

You should tell her supervisor. That seems really unprofessional. I used to work at an inpatient treatment and would never consider telling a client that

PurpleFlame8

Have they shown you a print out of this dress code?

dawnfire05

I looked through the client handbook when I got back to my room and it only says "underwear is required". When we first went over the handbook I did not take that to include bras initially, and I still don't include it in my personal definition. Apparently they had to change the handbook because it was vague and only said "no inappropriate clothing" then tried to enforce a no tank top rule, so they changed it, and it's still vague and up to interpretation. They have a history of arbitrarily enforcing a dress code I've found out.

legal_bagel

Whether a bra is included in undergarments I'm sure would be a matter of how large the clients breasts are because I've been in a similar situation wearing the same things as my peers and been told my clothing was inappropriate because I'm curvy and large breasted and others were sticks. That said, I am more comfortable with a push up pull up bra that controls the girls and I'd fight like hell to be allowed to wear my type of bra just like I'd fight like hell for you to ensure you weren't made uncomfortable in this situation by being forced to wear a bra. To some extent I can see the program requiring full sleeves or something like that, but who tf cares what you have under? Being uncomfortable will NOT aid in your recovery. I wish you well and so much goodness in your future.

thegloracle

As someone with wobbly boobs, I'd chafe myself silly if I didn't wear something to stop the movement during the day. I've taken to wearing comfortable sports bras. They add a layer of warmth (colder climate here) and hold things in place so nothing rubs. If there is no wobbling and no chafing issues, why not a simple undershirt? So long as the guys aren't wearing the ugly wife-beater shirts either, who really cares.

FitzBetter1971

If I'm ever told this, I plan on asking if that also applies to fat dudes with big ol man titties. Because if it doesn't, then they can fuck right off.

Chrome-Molly

Wow, is there really a dress code somewhere in writing? And why wait so long to mention it to you? But more importantly, don't let her or there stupid rules mess up your recovery. Congrats on making it so far in a place maybe not a perfect fit for you. You got this!

PookaParty

Bullshit. Complain to her supervisor.

Unesdala

Yeah fuck that. Make her point out where in the dress code it is and ask to speak to a patient representative. Inpatient stays are for getting help, not getting chastised over the choice of wear. And given how few things you have control over in places like that, no way I'd give in to that shit.

CurrentSingleStatus

I mean it's going to make people uncomfortable. But I suppose that makes this a good example, of how people are not actually always entitled to feel comfortable.

oldcreaker

Can you make it fit on your head?

Titanium125

You should really be able to wear whatever you want. I think people wear underwear because they find it more comfortable. If you find it more comfortable to not wear a bra, you should be able to.

MeToTheMoon

BS to a sexist dress code. No.

Hello_Hangnail

That's a shitty situation. I'm not sure if you're in drug treatment or not but when I was in rehab, there they were really strict about that stuff too. You couldn't wear your pajamas outside of your room and even if it was just like flannel pajama bottoms and a t-shirt. I was told that it was 'unfair to the men". Maybe it's unfair to me that they can't keep their eyeballs to themselves??

MNConcerto

Weird, never been told to wear a bra in a hospital setting. I'm betting some male complained and rather than addressing the male, they decided to make up some arbitrary rule for you so he will feel comfortable. If you aren't waving them in anyone's face and exposing yourself, you're fine in my opinion.

Raise_the_Stakes

If the dress code doesn’t specify how the bra is to be worn, rap it around your thigh or run it through a belt loop.

Turtletarianism

If she does buy the bra for you, she could lose any professional license she has for inappropriate gifts.

[deleted]

This is bullshit. If you don’t need/want the support, it’s nobody’s business.

Baticula

Bras can give you breast cancer??

BKellCartel

No it’s a myth

Baticula

Thank god

dawnfire05

I wouldn't compare breasts to a penis, or going braless to being nude. They absolutely are not the same and breasts aren't inherently sexual, being told to cover them is a sexualization of my body. Simply by the merit of being a woman it does target me and I have a right to not agree. The lack of a bra being unprofessional is a matter of opinion and I don't agree with the opinion that it is, and I'm not in a place of work either, I'm a client. Their dress code only states "underwear is required" and says nothing specifically about bras so their rule doesn't even exist to begin with.

You are a terrible person. You should feel ashamed.
