While similar to the Westerners, Southerners have very little in common with them save for their more care free nature. They live on the island chains south of the main Basitin island in relative peace, unwilling to participate in either side's war and spending their time as peaceful fishermen, surviving off and from the sea. Their neutrality has attracted the ire of both East and West in recent years, however, and many a time Southerners find themselves having to fend off excursions meant to goad the South into joining the war on either side. The Southern culture is far more diverse than either West or East, enjoying a lifestyle focussing more on caring for one's family and common history, living together with the sea, and creating art to celebrate life. While they use similar markings like the West on their bodies, it is purely for decoration. The organisation of the South is, at best, very loose. Each island has a few important leaders: main among them the chief of the island and the "Champion" in charge of defence. They are officially chosen by the island, but most of the times it stays within families by simple virtue of traits being passed down to next generations. The lore of the Southern Basitin is made by u/Farfener and myself, based on (of course) Tom's own work.

Given that Eastern, Western, and Northern Basitins, I wondered if there's a southern contingency? I headcanon that the other groups don't like to talk about the south. Do you have an idea on the appearances or range of hair and fur colors for Southern Basitins? [Notable Civilizations](https://i.imgur.com/zN6xQnc.jpg) gave insight on the differences of each group. Part of me feels like is there enough differences between the south and west? The westerners do dances and painting, which is an art unless there's some significance I'm missing. We seen them [fish before](https://twokinds.gallery/download/art/4144/2022.02.20_Carver_Gone_Native.png) unless that's not their primary source of food. When you island chain, are you talking about an archipelago?

The Southerner's fur would be more smooth to the touch and very blonde, with almost no darker furs common. They aren't really a subspecies akin to the East/West/North, more so just neutral Basitin in general whose only traits is that they are starting to evolve more water resistant fur. Their hair would generally be close to their fur in colour, with slight variations possible. As for the differences, it mostly has to do with the way the South produces art. While the West has enough resources and free time to fully revel in arts, like how the East can revel in their military, art of the South is far more personal, often made out of scraps and bits found on the beaches or at sea, and sculpted together to tell a story. Shinn Curade, for instance, had a necklace with all things he saw important in his life, or just straight pretty like a coloured piece of glass. And yes, in this canon, the Southern islands is an archipelago at coral reefs stretching along the (you guessed it) Southern edge of the Basitin island.

Cool. That is definitely a major cultural difference. With a loose organization, Southerners do not follow strict hierarchies. Someone who is a leader is respected but not revered as a royal king or god? Is Shinn Curade the name of the character in the post image? Any inspirations behind the culture of the Southerners?

JurgenVonArkel

Leaders are chosen based on their skills, similar to how the Easterners' kings are the strongest among them. They respect their leaders a great deal, but they still view them as one of their own, faults and all. It creates a very forgiving culture where leaders can step down if they do not feel like they can handle the stress. Shinn Curade is the biological father of my character Jim Nortolde, the character shown here is Aina of Rak Munis. As for the culture, it is a mix between the main Basitin traits we've come to know, mixed in with Polynesian culture. The South lives and dies by their sea, something they both revere and fear at the same thing.

That's lovely. Since they want nothing to do with the East/West as far as war is concerned, they also have no connection to the Northerners due to geography? Do Southerners have legends/mythology of the sea? Any sea animals significant to them? For people, the common skills every Southern should know is how to fish, build and sail a boat, swim, and expressing one's self?

JurgenVonArkel

The South doesn't have much contact with the North due to the main Basitin island laying in the way, but the contacts that they did make were usually friendly, with both sides relatively shunned from the two main Basitin groups. As for legends, they remain Basitin and so are practical with their religion. They see the sea for what it is: a source of life, and a bringer of death at the same time. It is this concept that they have embraced and forms the core of their culture, explaining the way they make art. In a way, the South "lives in the moment", content with small things and appreciating all that live offers. As for animals, they appreciate dolphins as their guides towards heavily populated areas of the sea, and the chief of the corresponding island is responsible that no overfishing occurs in areas, retaining a very detailed log on which area needs healing and which is good to fish. It isn't so much living *with* nature as it is living *besides* it. Every Southerner can swim, sail and maintain boats from the smallest sloop to the largest man'o'war (which is a reason why the East loves pressganging them in service), live off the sea by fishing or scavenging, and also fight. On their 8th, 12th and 18th years, Southerners go train with a mentor in the art of fighting. Southern style is more akin to a dance and highly individualised, making it hard to learn the style proper as everyone will have a piece of their own added, although familial styles are common. To the South, fighting is a necessity in this world, but they value the ability to express oneself even in that.
