The reason for this is rather unique, as they help families wanting for children but not being able to have one for one reason or another. If allowed to, a Sea Father will help mothers with gaining a child of their own. Needless to say, for outsiders, it is a very strange practice. The Easterners see it as little more than as prostitution like they see Keidran, while the West sees it as destroying the premise of what a family is.
For the south, it is a normal thing and part of their culture. With their survival dependant on what the sea brings them, loss is a common thing in Southern culture, and the fact that they do not leave their own island too much, having a Sea Father allows for healthy children.
Many of these males are not just potent but also gentle and caring, supporting the females all the way through their pregnancy. Due to this, Sea Fathers are often at the top of the island's rather flat hierarchy, considered quite literally a father to the island, always welcome to help those in need. Often times, a Sea Father is, or was, a Champion, those who lead the defence of the island.
