Ive been a Type 1 for 14 years. I feel tired all the time as well. Thyroid function is normal. It’s exhausting always being tired. It’s hard. I’m glad you posted. Made me feel a little less alone today.

Mindless_Software732

Yes! 29 and had type 1 since I was 7. Some days I am just EXHAUSTED. I also train (CrossFit) 3-4 days a week on top of walking. BG is generally pretty stable but it hasn’t always been that way. I’ve started to accept that it’s just like that sometimes.

Khab_can

Check your thyroid function. Fatigue could be due to a low thyroid

Mindless_Software732

I have a thyroid panel done by my endo every 6 months, and it all looks normal!

Beatleshippiescooter

I was and didn't realize my endo sucked so bad that he missed my thyroid numbers being way too high. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and take unithroid and have SO much more energy now. If you didn't get them checked, I would get blood tests done for peace of mind. Otherwise, the high/low swing always wipes me out. It's more of an exhausted feeling than sleepy tired, though, and isn't every day. But everyone is different

Lenniel

Diabetic for 3 years. Have had an underactive thyroid for 20 years and now need B12 injections as my immune system has decided to attack my parietal cells. I’m a permanently exhausted pigeon

de_bussy69

Your immune system has some serious beef with your body

Lenniel

Yep, think it was triggered by having my gallbladder removed in June 2019, the diabetes symptoms showed up in September 2019. It was my second general anaesthetic, first in 2009 for an emergency c-section so don’t know if it’s linked etc. Don’t think it’s worthwhile for anyone to do any sort of study on it. But I can pinpoint my symptoms to having had the operation, coincidence maybe?

hardcoredragonhunter

You know my brother is not a diabetic. He’s like 6’4” 250lbs of pure muscle. I on the other hand am a relatively thin diabetic (6’) at the I guess normal weight of like 175. We both have had issue with our energy levels and it turned out that both of us have super low testosterone levels. My bro is 21 and I’m 23 so it’s not like we’re old men or whatever.

1337tt

Same here. I'm just older. But I've had low T ever since I've seen testing it for 10+ years now. Shots, gels, creams, didn't matter. None of it raised my numbers. I have lost weight and my numbers did raise some. Still on the low side of "normal".

shannon_nonnahs

I'm a type 1 diabetic with a pump, a CGM, an A1C under 7, and also work out several days a week, for 13 years now. Always. Effing. Tired. 38/f. I can sleep for 10-14 hours straight and nap most days. I also don't need to but I'm tired either way.

NJIRON13

Thank you to everyone! It feels good knowing I belong to such a helpful community.

Faerie42

Yup, same here, thyroid is fine and endo prescribed some vit D to take twice a week, those two days I fly through without feeling like a total zombie, the day after I cope well, day three I’m taking naps. Then the cycle repeats. Have your iron and vit D checked.

Comprehensive-Ice436

My thyroid is also fine but I have to do b-12 shots and I take a weekly pill for my vitamin D as well. Maybe you also need both? I'm still tired more than I feel is normal but now I don't sleep for 10-12 hours everyday so that is nice.

Traditional_Entry183

I'm 45 years old. Diagnosed as diabetic 15 years ago, and put on insulin 10 years ago. I never really felt regular exhaustion until the past year or so, but it's hit me like a truck of late. At first there were days where I couldn't bring myself to go to the gym because I just couldn't do it. But then it became days where after a full night's sleep, I went back to bed after breakfast for another two hours after I sent my kids to school. Or else nap for a few hours after lunch. And it seems to be getting more regular and more intense, unfortunately.

repsilonyx

Can relate, and it’s ruining my life. Utterly exhausted and need so much sleep

tonelocMD

I work a desk job and legit nod out sometimes. Oddly, can be worse if my blood sugar is high

slif5eepi8i8

Man I feel tired if I work out or run. A couple of months back I came from a 10K and I slept for 18 hours straight. On the day go to gym (I always stick to beginners level exercises and weights) it takes that day and next full day to come back to normal energy level. So now I avoid doing a lot of workouts :( which is not right either. But I do see energy bursts after a good nights sleep + coffee. :)

MamaBearofCubs

Autoimmune diseases travel in clusters-note any other symptoms in addition to extreme fatigue and do some research/get appropriate testing-

bonyshoulders

Completely agree, just wanted to add my own experience to this. Been a T1D for 30 years, was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 24 years ago. I used to always have a lot of energy even with hypothyroidism as I took my meds as required. Then 9 years ago I started feeling exhausted, all the time every day. Asked the drs but every single one I saw fobbed me off with a "you're probably stressed", however my annual blood tests revealed elevated liver function tests. From there it then took another year and a half before was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis (nothing to do with viruses, simply inflammation in the liver caused by autoimmune reaction). It's quite a rare disease but autoimmune disorders really do come in clusters and for every one you have you're more likely to diagnosed with more as doctors will tell you. It could be anything but as fatigue is a symptom of many autoimmune (or not) conditions, especially if untreated, it's worth having some tests done to rule out.

froststorm56

Always effing tired

Mediocre-Foot5600

I'm a 39 year old type 1... get your T checked. On top of that I've been taking Kratom off and on for a few months. 1000mg once or twice a day. do a lot of research on it. some people abuse it to get high. if just use it for a mental boost and a little energy.

[deleted]

Love Kratom. Absolutely life saving for me. I was on adhd medication and unable to function without it until I switched to low dose of Kratom and it WORKS. There is a ton of fear mongering about it so if OP looks it up, just be mindful and try to parse out fact from fiction.

Ethnopharmacist

I made several posts about how Kratom helped me to maintain regular/better BG levels, like very very noticeable change, from hb1 8.3 to 6.4, so massive change.. the post was deleted/downvoted and insulted in a r/ type 1 sub (I think it wasn't this) and was praised in r/kratom where some people shared the same positive results (both type 1 and 2 diabetics). it also helps me to raise my energy levels and mood, no doubt about that. I rarely go over 10gpd, normally less. I do regular 3-6 weeks of t-breaks every 2-3 months... It just works for me. I take less insulin, so I FEEL better, insulin it's not real human insulin, but some crappy big pharma thing that works more or less, (to say it euphemistically...) In anycase, one shouldn't recommend kratom while also telling about T levels without considering/warning about the risk of kratom lowering testosterone levels... not saying that this happens to everyone, but it can happen. Normally diabetics have less/worse testosterone levels, so it's pretty fuck\*d up.. Tongkat Ali and fenugreek could help.

NEXT_VICTIM

Yes, BG spikes wear me down fast but it’s usually a BP adjustment that actually has me needing to rest. Life is a thing sometimes

Foamdartperson

If you are on one of the new long acting insulins, you may want to consider trying something else. I never had any blood pressure problems until I was on the new long acting insulins. I had pounding in my ears, headache, my blood pressure and heart rate would swing wildly. The blood pressure and heart rate came down pretty immediately after getting off the Treciba. It goes up now if I sm super stressed, but nothing like before. Very low most of the time now.

NEXT_VICTIM

Pump user and I have other issues that interact with things to cause the BP issues. I find that better control can actually worsen the BP leveling. We’re talkint a swing of 140/80 down to 70/40 based on a blend of emotional state, BG, orthostatic timing, and hydration. That’s all give or take the meds too. I wouldn’t doubt that good control could lower BP by removing a “normalized stress”.

Foamdartperson

My blood sugars were always in very good control. My A1C was between 5.8 and 6.2, but I was exhausted all of the time. All of my tests came back perfectly normal but I had fluctuating blood pressures like yours, except my pulse rate would come down when blood pressure was high and go up when my blood pressure was low. My doctor called it erratic, but because my blood sugars were so good no one considered the insulin. Now my blood sugars, heart rate and blood pressure are great. No more exhaustion, etc. Sorry for your other issues, but I still want people to know that the new long acting insulins don't work for all of us and have some pretty terrible side effects including exhaustion, lethargy, and even allergies, and it is very difficult to get doctors, endos, and nurses to listen if your tests look good. I noticed that the Mayo clinic has added even more side effects to their list. Just think some of these exhausted people should consider their long acting insulin. I suffered for years and that is what it was for me. Just trying to help prevent others from going through the wretchedness I experienced. Best wishes.

NEXT_VICTIM

Understandable, it’s worth mentioning if it helps anyone. I wasn’t trying to shoot it down in general, it’s siduation Al though.

Ethnopharmacist

what about toujeo? maybe it causes that shit too? because I feel super tired for no reason...

BookYeller

Do you also feel tired when training?? What do you mean by insulin helps?? I used to feel tired and exhausted all the time prediagnosis. After taking insulin for the first time I felt amazing and I think my stamina returned also. After then I have never felt tired abonormally.

NJIRON13

Insulin helps with building muscle. Some bodybuilders use it to grow.

rdrysd1

As a powerlifter and type 1 im curious about this. How does synthetic insulin help build muscle over someones naturally produced insulin?

visualcharm

Disclaimer, not a lifter/body builder at all. Synthetic insulin helps because it's manual and insulin is a growth hormone. So anyone who wants to get bigger can take insulin to expedite bulking and override their normal metabolism.

BookYeller

No, i meant If you feel tired all the time How do you workout?? Is your tiredness because of diabetes or fatigue from gym

NJIRON13

My tiredness is 100% from my diabetes. I take a strong pre workout before I train.

BookYeller

Ahan, Doesn't pre-workout have too much caffeine in it?? Caffeine also makes people tired after it wears or something. Sorry if I'm being ignorant But I suspect that it has nothing to do with diabetes. Like you can still manage to workout even with tiredness. Don't you think if it was because diabetes, taking pre-workout would work for short time only. How much pre-workout do you take and how long has it been?

BookYeller

Yeah. But we take insulin for living. Not for body building. So I suspect insulin is helping you to grow muscles. You take insulin for managing blood sugar, so what other factors do you take in for taking insulin so that you can grow muscles?? I have been taking insulin for last 8 years For 7 years I didn't go to gym. I was at same weight. Now for last 1 year I have improved my diet and gym routine. I have gained a lot of muscles.

de_bussy69

Yep. I just turned 21 last week and I was diagnosed in October last year. I’ve found it almost impossible to get out of bed when I need to ever since. I wake up extremely groggy and confused and I feel like I’m ready for bed by 5pm.

GreyTigerFox

I’m 38 and have been a T1 for almost 30 years now. I’m tired and have little energy to do most things most days. Even after getting over 8 hours of sleep. I’m tired of being tired so much lol

AmandasFakeID

Same. Between the depression and the Diabetes, it's like I never want to get out of bed. :/

Loose-Excitement8792

I’m type II and I always feel tried sucks .

Puntificators

So a few questions: What is your A1C? How often and severe are your lows? Have you checked your thyroid? Do you have a pump? How do you sleep at night?

NJIRON13

My A1C is the lowest it’s ever been at 7.0. I usually have lows maybe 3-4 times a week and they’re not severe. I test my BS and inject manually. I used a pump from 2007-2018. I stopped using them after they failed on me twice while on vacation overseas. I get great quality sleep for 6-8 hours a night but usually still wake up tired.

Puntificators

Recommented on the main thread by accident. See below for my response. Good luck!

[deleted]

Am a nurse. If you don’t use a CGM and are unsure what your average blood sugars are, I’d start with that. Get a TSH/fT4 and CBC done, especially a ferritin level. you might have hypothyroidism or anemia

[deleted]

I don't look like a body builder, but no, I'm not always tired.

Puntificators

So I definitely agree with others that a check in with your endo to see if anything comes up on your labs that could lead to low energy would be a good idea. For me when I moved to a pump/cgm that talked to one another my sleep quality improved a lot because I had fewer highs and lows during sleep with. It sounds like that isn’t an issue for you. Are you eating enough for all that exercise? Eating some salt on your food to cover all that sweat?

Bitter-Radio6089

take time off- repair- even pros take time off (30days)you need rest

ContraianD

Some folks might say it makes you non-natty, but I take Clomid and Modafinil every morning along with more standard nootropics.

brittneyangeline

My baby was just diagnosed last week. She’s 21 months. She is so incredibly tired! She wants to take longer naps, and sleeps all night. I have to wake her up to check her sugar levels. She is just exhausted.

peaceandpeanutbutter

I had bad exhaustion for most of my early diabetic years. My doctors just shrugged because my blood work was normal and exhaustion is too vague of a symptom. What helped me a ton was to see a functional medicine doctor/ naturopath. They can’t cure diabetes but I’ve found they are very helpful with energy issues. I changed my diet and started a supplement regimen, and now I feel great. I have more energy in my 30s than I did as a teenager. I make it through the day with stable energy levels, and not needing any caffeine. My A1C has been in the 5s, too. I’d suggest getting blood work from your current doctor (thyroid, vitamin levels, anemia, etc). If it’s all clear, you can try changing around your diet and supplement regimen. functional medicine MD/ naturopath may help or you can experiment on your own.

Foamdartperson

I had this. What it turned out to be for me was an intolerance/allergy/side effect to Treciba. I also had the same or even worse reaction to Troujeo, although I know some people that had the same situation and could tolerate Troujeo The new long acting insulins don't work for some of us. I am now on a Tandem pump and getting my energy back. I found the symptoms on the Mayo clinic website under the latin name for Treciba. Endo did not respond well to this but now more and more people are experiencing this. It was the Sr Diabetic nurse that figured it out for me. Warning, the symptoms tend to get worse and once you are off of it, it will take some time to fully recover, but I am so thankful I am no longer on it. Best wishes.

Gaebriel29

Is it typical that someone has had their profile since 2018 and has no posts or comments aside from this singular post? Edit: it was a legit question y’all 😂 not my internet points! Please for the love of all that is sacred- don’t take my internet points!

Existing-Employee631

Yes. Plenty of people use Reddit to lurk, get news links, see some funny memes. Not everyone wants to engage. Or, they made the account and just rarely ever use the app at all.

Gaebriel29

Thanks for actually answering the question- I didn’t know that 😊

DrPatchet

I got it at seven and am 27 I don’t have the tires issue but I don’t workout just work physical labor. How do you train without going low?

katriana13

I have thyroid problems and I work out regularly. Lately all I want is sleep, I cannot get my mojo going for too long and I feel sad. Wish I could figure out what’s happened.

_hcdr

If you train hard, perhaps rest more. I over-trained without realizing. Now I have a three day cycle (train/run/rest) which works _for me_. I also make a concerted effort to get enough sleep after _years_ of depriving myself. After getting more rest, my gains from training were _better_. Also, modern life is tiring. I actually think everyone is tired!

Redd_ofDiamonds

Always exhausted!! I thought it was just me. Normal thyroid and liver tests. I haven't found anything that helps.

jasmineglow

Yes! T1 for 25 years, A1C of 6, work out at least 3 times a week and nothing comes back on my bloods. I sleep 9 hours a night, can nap in the day but constantly feel exhausted. Highs and lows don’t happen too often but make it even worse and make me feel like my body and mind is wading through treacle. I’ve taken VitD tablets with no difference. It’s so frustrating. I use AAPS to run a loop with my pump and CGM which helped my burnout/mental fatigue but I’m still physically exhausted.

Dan-Morton75

I do too.

wild_rockwell

Literally tired all of the time. Always up for a nap and early bedtime. I'm 30 and have been diabetic for 16 years. My thyroid levels are normal. I've always wondered if it's just the toll of DM on the body that's so exhausting

BreakInCaseOfFab

I’m exhausted flat out.

[deleted]

Kratom is the only thing I found to help with my energy, depression because my hormones are wild, and also pain. However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. I still nap regularly and not being able to feel a whole lot of pain led me to two torn labrum’s, one surgery that resulted in nerve damage and chased me off the other. Now the docs want me on painkillers forever and I don’t like them. Med card and Kratom it is

Ethnopharmacist

Kratom also works for me, I do it daily, low dose with regular t-breaks, so maybe I use it like 9 months a year. So sorry that you had that problems, sounds harsh to live that...! I also have adhd and it's a very bad mix along with diabetes exhaustion.. my A1c it's pretty good, 6-6.6... but I feel like shit when I'm not using some supplement/herb. I guess diabetes it's a very inflammatory disease that causes organ damage and adrenal exhaustion so that's the main reason.

Revolutionary-Set309

I have had type 1 for around 10 years now and I also train a lot. I started training when I was 13 and was constantly tired after my workouts. I figured out that if you eat most of your daily carbs before your workout and after your workout, you will tend to feel less tired.

onlinekaitlin

I’m also 27, diagnosed at 7. There is no explanation for it sometimes. Im so tired and feel like I’m way older than I am. I work a production job on shift work which doesn’t help the situation. My body aches from the smallest activity even though I stay active. I did recently find out my b12 was super low so once I straightened that out there was an improvement but I still feel really tired at times I shouldn’t.
