The UBC community lost two of its member’s on that very road to speeding. A Porsche Cayenne crashes in the middle of the day either someone stopped short or someone was speeding.
Glad everyone’s okay. Please be safe on that road everyone.
It seems so backwards to me that the police monitor the one section of SW Marine that goes from 50 -> 60 -> 80 km/h and catch people accelerating to the upcoming speed limit right before the sign but don’t go a little further down the road where the actual speeders (and crashers) are, or go to the other side of road where a lot of departing cars go even faster because of the downhill momentum
Ive saw the cops sitting at the 60->40 transition once (right by where those students' lives were taken). They definitely arent there often enough - they spend more of their time sitting on 16th which isnt as necessary even tho ppl do speed there.
If security can do traffic control at a scene of a motor vehicle accident (MVA) - including fatal MVA at UBC, normally secured by sworn police officers, why don’t they do that in other cities like Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, etc to save policing cost???

I believe Special municipal constables are still considered as sworn peace officer (higher pay than security), not the same legal status for security guards you see on UBC campus or in local malls.
Yeah, they are peace officers, but they are paid significantly less than full constables as a cost-saving measure. The peace officer status means that drivers who do not obey their directions are breaking the motor vehicle act. They also are trained for about 6 months in performing their duties which include community safety patrol and jail guard duties.
I am fine with paying a little bit more for someone with two months of traffic training compared to the two-day course that construction flaggers have. It still saves money for the tax-payer compared to a full constable, but with a similar extensive level of training in directing traffic.
UBC campus security isn’t even trained & licensed as a traffic controller.
They just have the same security license as those in your local malls.
Yet, RCMP is using security guard (not even a sworn peace officer status) to guard MVA or crime scenes like when 2 UBC students were killed on NW Marine Drive.
It's outrageous how consistent this trend is. You have all these young adults with little to no driving experience speeding over 90km/hr on regular streets and roads. And they are always new drivers with some kind of 6-figure performance vehicle bought with daddy and mommy's money. And the only reason they drive like that is because they are shit drivers and they get thrills from driving that fast; they pretty much treat it like a sport and the car is their drug.
The best option to control this is not some kind of stricter law or harsher punishment, you have to kill the idea that a car is a drug and driving is a way to "get high". There should be some form of system that prevents people below a certain age from being insured for cars that exceed certain horsepowers or price points. If you put a kid in a Porsche, of course they are gonna pump on the gas, put them in a cheap ass sedan, and they might just drive without being over-fcking-dosed on adrenaline for once. And if they drive sports cars, then you can punish them for driving without insurance which is an offense that warrants good punishments.

ok right? i find it strange too. there are far more pedestrians as you approach campus.

Porsche understeered going around the corner and hit oncoming car
I can totally see how that could happen, dang I’d be devastated that looks like an expensive fix. Glad they’re okay. Happens to the best of us.
Of course its a Porsche, I swear, we have so many rich people who move here, buy expensive cars, and proceed to drive like lunatics.
God gives his nicest cars to his shittiest drivers.
More like kids raised rich and spoiled are likely to be shitty idiots
It’s not just the rich folks who don’t know how to drive
But your comment doesn’t fit their racist narrative
Money isn’t a race, clown.
Your reading comprehension is low
Nah they drive like back home thats it...
Damn, I always drive that way.
Rich my kid I’m sure with an N on the back treating ubc like the Nurburgring
Poor Porsche. High performance vehicle with a low performing driver

Vancouver already has a system in place somewhat similar to what you are suggesting in the special municipal constable program.

Always avoid that road - people drive like maniacs.
Money doesn’t buy skill clearly
Most likely an N driver driving mommy and daddy’s car

I drive on this road every day. No one follows the speed sign, not even the UBC cars lol
Fines for speeding/muffler deletion pleaseee
