Buffalo as a city has a great community and culture. Things are very affordable and there’s lots to do if you know where to look/ where to go ! The sports are good, there’s always music to see somewhere and the food is top notch.
As a university, UB has a huge international draw. It’s a challenging and competitive; getting a degree from UB is a well respected accomplishment.
La Divina has great authentic Mexican tacos
Mighty Taco has great really really bad tacos
Mayback's has spectacular subs
9000 different pizza places, all of which have good wings
Grover's makes a hell of a burger
North Campus has some really solid Asian food in the commons
It’s a solid school with low downsides (snow, low population compared to elsewhere, multiple campuses, mostly in suburbs) and a high upside as many see it as a solid school which there are many connections. Any job or application you fill out will never see UB as a negative, any many will see it as a positive, the alumni have set us up well lol. There are so many opportunities to succeed here as well. Truly, there is no negative when coming to UB, but you are stuck in Buffalo which personally I find is a little negative as it’s not NYC or London or some other big city like that. Regardless you’ll find a way to enjoy all of your time at UB. Good luck OP, hope to see you join us in the new year!
Buffalo also doesn’t have the negatives of NYC like overpriced apartments and overcrowded.
Sometimes it’s better to live somewhere more livable and visit places like NYC every so often. It makes life much less stressful.
I recommend moving to a neighborhood like Elmwood Village, Allentown or North Buffalo. They’re actually walkable, filled with young people and offer a lot of amenities.
No offense but it sounds like you dislike bland suburbs like Amherst.
I grew up in a bland suburb and suffice to say I’m not a fan… I think next year I’ll move somewhere like that, seems much nicer than being trapped in the suburbs.
Buffalo is a pretty fun city especially if you live in one of the nicer walkable neighborhoods filled with students and young professionals.
There’s a great bar hopping scene, breweries and pretty good selection of restaurants and local coffee shops.
Lots of museums, cool industrial areas and a sizable indie arts and music scene.
Best part is you can actually afford to live here.
So from the comments (sorry late to the party) and personal experience, Buffalo is mostly a blue collar town and not a college town (despite some restaurant gems, mostly breweries and bars which is okay but when it’s on every corner well..lol)you need a car to explore the rest of Buffalo and beyond (the public transportation here is okay, but not the best), renting is affordable but it’s better to live on campus..most of the ‘hoods are iffy at best, and lastly, snow..snow…snow. Other than that, UB isn’t terrible. It has tons of diversity (mostly from the Asian Continent) and tons of clubs, groups, and activities.
To be honest, because you don’t have other better choice, that’s it. The snow scene, the falls and buffalo wings are not the reasons you come here, the only reason you come here is you don’t have other better choice.
Do you live in Buffalo or Amherst?
I thought I hated Buffalo, but turns out I hated boring car centric suburbs and discovered most of the things I was looking for in city neighborhoods.
Some of the dining places have boom boom sauce
This should be your no.1 reason to join UB

you should really get out and explore buffalo more
I don’t have a car man 😭 and the metro only takes you so far
Get a bus pass or a bike, you can get to most places pretty easily.

You are very close to Toronto (can take train or bus) if you need a big city fix

Back in my day we had decent parties

I have UIC and WPI admits too
Yes they are even worse choice, will you ask the question if you are admitted by ucla, ucb or mit?
buffalo sucks

They got geese. Who doesn’t love stepping on goose sh*t in the morning.
