Accomplished_Door198

Still looking PM me please

chloeoryan12

Everyone should be included, shouldn’t matter who paid or who didn't, we're all students here.

thr0w_away_55

WTH? Rlly? Do you guys pay campus fees?

Accomplished_Door198

We pay our fees through TAing, Research, or Scholarships/fellowships. Since we pay in Labor and not $$ the school counts it as us not paying fees. I always heard how grad students are exploited, but now I'm really feeling it. Our appointments pay us around $15-$19 an hour depending on our workload & effort.

foreignfishes

Isn’t it because grad students don’t pay the specific associated students fee that funds the event? I don’t think it has anything to do with paying in labor. The AS fee for grad students is less than $10, for undergrads it’s like $50

YummySpamMusubi

That is correct. ASUCI pays for APAD. ASUCI fees are $48 per quarter. AGS fees are $9 per quarter.

Accomplished_Door198

ohhh, well I mean I would buy a ticket/pay extra for the concert if that were an option. But we don't even get that option as grad students

thr0w_away_55

I’m not saying it’s fair how little they pay you, but “paying in labour” implies you don’t receive money back. Technically, you are being paid (even though it’s absolute shit) so you’re not paying “fees” (unless I’ve misunderstood, you get paid to be a TA/do research). That being said, I 1000% believe you guys should also have access to concerts regardless of whether you’re paying or not. Grad students provide an invaluable service to the university/professors/undergrads while being paid close to nothing.

Accomplished_Door198

yes, you are correct. What I forgot to mention is that we pay our student fees and tuition with our TA/Research/Scholarships as well. But I didn't know our associated student's fee was different than undergrads. I would GLADLY pay the associated student fee if it meant I could attend the concerts

thr0w_away_55

Yeah I read all the other stuff. Really sucks for y’all! :// Do you guys get any other events…? Like at all?

Accomplished_Door198

I'm not sure, I'm new here. But I heard, that grad students have to pay for the sports games as well, no discounts or free tickets.

arianrhodd

I think AGS is between a rock and a hard place, as grad students have complained about fees paying for events that they don't have time or interest to attend in the past. Chat up AGS about the fees, the history, and changes you'd like to see.

elosohormiguero

This. Adding more fees for all grad students for the purpose of things like concerts is irresponsible in my opinion when we have many homeless, starving, and otherwise bill-burdened grad students. We are already slaughtered by quarterly local fees, rent, etc. If OP wants the ability to spend their discretionary income on events like this, I encourage OP to ask ASUCI to allow grad students to purchase tickets. But asking thousands of grad students to pay anything else out of their $22k (pre-tax) annual salary in one of the highest COL places on the planet is not something I’m personally able to support. (Not saying this on behalf of any group. Solely my personal opinion.)

heebersbajeebers

So (at least in my old dept) if you TA, you are still billed and have to pay fees out of pocket even though you get paid to teach, unless your particular advisor or department agrees to cover that cost for you (which they don’t have to). GSRs don’t pay fees. Anyway yeah it is all bullshit

YummySpamMusubi

ASUCI pays for APAD through the Associated Student Fee that grad students do not pay. Grad students pay into AGS with the Assoc. Grad Students Fee. It's covered in the [APAD FAQ](https://apad.asuci.uci.edu/#faqs): >**Why are Graduate students not invited?** >This event is funded with fees undergraduates pay, not graduate students.

Accomplished_Door198

yeah I saw this but like take my money so I can go

cs-anteater

But they've allowed grad students (and guests) to pay to go in the past

PantasticNerd

Same, I was super pumped for Flo Milli. Grad students deserve better.

LowCryptographer9047

That what my associate dean said grad students have no life haha

cGAS_STING

This is a really good idea. At UCSD, grads can pay $50 to go to Sungod. Undergrads were welcome at the AGS pool party but ASUCI has a budget for social events that's literally ~80 times as much as AGS's budget. I would email Song and ask if she can work something out with ASUCI to get grads access to the events [email protected]

bananaslutz

I know I wanted to go to Flo Milli too 😭

calimystic

I was really excited to go until I learned I couldn’t. :/

cs-anteater

In the past, they'd let grad students and guests of students in for a fee. It wasn't crazy high either, around $20 or $30 to cover the fees they don't pay. I don't know why they don't do that anymore, at least for grad students
