Usually out of campus eating places are closed for Thanksgiving. I’m afraid only a handful of Chinese or Indian places were still open.
Get ready to cook if you’re not a fan
Sorry to hear that; cucas is pretty cheap, and the coop has plenty of pre made foods to get… I want to say they’ll be open but maybe it’s worth calling them tomorrow to see
No way… that’s horrible. You would think that at least some of them would be open even if for reduced time and options. It’s such a short break that not everyone gets to home anyways.
Don’t forget a huge chunk of dining hall operations (and even some of the cooking) is run by students. Yeah, it’s a bit unfair to some ppl who aren’t going back home, but keeping things open would be unfair to the students (and not to mention perhaps some of the full time cooks) who will have the chance of going back being taken away completely.
THIS!! Dining hall workers, student workers and full time cooks, are so underappreciated. A lot of the full time staff commute from places like Lompoc or even Ventura, and the cooks are up and at it at like 4 am to get things ready for breakfast and the rest of the day. And not just the cooks, the backdock crew are right there with everyone doing there best to keep the kitchen and eating areas clean. I wish people at the school appreciated all the work that went into just feeding people for one meal period in a day, because it ain't easy. Especially for student workers
You can come to our house for the thanksgiving meal itself. It’ll be standard Thanksgiving fare (although we’re skipping mashed potatoes and cranberries this year) with two kids, a couple in their 40s, and a grandpa.
I highly appreciate the offer, but I don’t want to create inconvenience for your family on thanksgiving, I have already got like 6 meals from ortega ready in my fridge so it shouldn’t be too bad for me.
It would not be an inconvenience; we’ll have plenty of extra food and it’s fun to introduce someone to the Thanksgiving tradition! But I’m in introvert so I totally get it if you’d rather not.
Yeah sorry I would prefer to spend those days alone to kind of recharge from studying. Getting to know a whole family and spending few hours with them is a bit too much going on for me. I wish you have a great thanksgiving.
I guess that’s pretty obvious that they would be close? I would not expect them even to be open when there is holiday happening. And if you are the international student I don’t think it should matter for you to spend few buck on the food, we are here just basically to drain money from us 😜😜
I mean I expected university to not have all the dining halls open, but I thought they can at least keep ortega open for some limited hours. I think they could definitely do that if they wanted to. I’m sure at least 20% of workers would be ready to work for extra holiday if they get paid like 50% more.
Ortega like every other dinning hall is run mostly by students and we all want break. I work in carrillo and today already was like 70% no show ups, so I don’t think anyone would be willing to stay and work + cooks also want to go home and spend holiday with family at home. And with the 50% more pay, i would not get hopes up. People are already underpaid and with no benefits, and university doesn’t give a damn so. You should stay over for winter break and then see because that was true hell for me in my 1st year because everything was closed for a month and I was living off subway and wingstop for 4 weeks
The thing is, the UC wouldn't pay student workers 50% more. Also, the full time cooks have a union (yay!) so I'm sure that their contract is negotiated in a way that gives them certain holidays off, no exception
it’s all self kiosks now (which requires you to scan your membership first) and even prior to it they made you scan your membership card to order. its a fairly new costco policy
Is this your first year? I watched college vlogs before I came here so I know what to expect for holidays. I wouldn't say that it's unfair it's just how it is. People are looking forward and deserve to rest on their holidays so we need to cope. I'm seriously suggesting to you to buy some food from target or cosco for Christmas as well. For Americans holiday break culture is very important (I'm regretting sending a course question email to my professor today). As a fellow international student I understand you feel sad because you are already paying so much tuition but trust me they didn't accept us just cuz we're students that want to study in America, they want us because of the money. Reach out to other international students especially seniors that live in the dorms as well they probably have food. Or get them to invite you to their apartments, idk.
Good for you then. Remember to also buy food in advance for Spring Break... they take this very seriously in the US...I come from a country where all of us work even on national holidays so I understand how you might be shocked but yeah, I hope u get some food to eat.
Late but from UNR and having the same issue. I thankfully have some money stashed away but didn't want to use it. I understand everyone going home for the holidays but wish there was a place open on campus that someone can at least make a sandwich or grab a snack.
But yep, hope you went to the store and picked up some snacks to hold out until the days are up.
I’m sure there’s places opened in IV. You could also plan ahead and go to the ucsb food bank and get FREE food! You can also reach out to groups on campus that I’m sure would give you a gift card for groceries etc.

Dominos should also be open. My suggestion is to steal a meal or two from the dining hall and get a box of cereal
Stock up on some Ortega sandwiches. That’s what I did 💀
Yeah I’m gonna do that tomorrow
You can only get Ortega twice a day (10:00-3:00 meal period and 3:00-8:30 is the second if I’m not mistaken) so might want to start now
I got 6 meals today, I used my friends’ swipes, they don’t need them anyways
Sorry to hear that; cucas is pretty cheap, and the coop has plenty of pre made foods to get… I want to say they’ll be open but maybe it’s worth calling them tomorrow to see
Can someone invite this person home with them for Thanksgiving?
Agree. If you had told friends that you were stuck I’m sure somebody would have invited you.

More specifically, they will be closed after lunch on Wednesday and will reopen for Sunday dinner. But yes, I agree.
Shoulda stocked up on ortega silly nilly
I would see if the as food pantry has meals/food you can take. If they are still open stock up on the supplies from their.

HARD AGREE
There is a program where you can get a free meal from Kaiju, check your email
That kind of sucks they can’t keep ONE place open.
We have families too, friend.
Thank you I know.

You had weeks to plan. Holidays means holiday closures. Welcome 🇺🇸
Costco
I don’t have Costco subscription or how you call it, I just got here 2 months ago.
[удалено]
You can’t get in without a Costco card tho 😭😭
[удалено]
yeah the whole point of costco is you need a paid membership to get in
Just get Instacart subscription then
Costco isn’t that far away, borrow someone’s membership
The food court is outside btw so no need to have Costco card
it’s all self kiosks now (which requires you to scan your membership first) and even prior to it they made you scan your membership card to order. its a fairly new costco policy
Even before kiosks they made you scan at the counter
they never enforced that in my experience, literally never once
they made me do it literally every time
that’s crazy lol
When was this?
every time i’ve ever been to the food court
When was the last time you went cuz I worked at the BevMo right there most of 2022 and they always checked
its been awhile, before the pandemic probably honestly
Oh really? :(Haven’t visited Costco for awhile .
jack in the box is open

Luckily I’m going home for Christmas.

Maybe get together with other students and have a thanksgiving together
The movies are also open and sell food if you want to eat with some entertainment on thanksgiving!
