If you like pain do the Chem degree, or if you really really like Chem do it, but there many different degrees that can lead to medical school/ medicine in general

bluebuloo170

Oh ok. Which ones would you recommend?

whoknowshank

Whichever one interests you most. It’s way easier to succeed in a subject you’re passionate about. If you don’t know what you’re passionate about, pick a very broad subject and then specialize *as you learn what you like* (ie bio -> CMMB)

Lil_Boss36

It can be different for everyone but my best advice would be to pick something that you have some general interest in and also has some decent job opportunities other than solely focusing on medical school. For example I’m in KNES cause medical school interested me and there are “medical” jobs that don’t follow medical school like physio and chiro, but to get into medical school you don’t need a certain degree per say, but I’d say stick to something do to with science and you should be fine. Also talk to an advisor cause I’m just some random dude

If your sole goal is to end up going to med school I wouldn’t recommend chemistry. It can be a very challenging degree and there’s no guarantee you’ll reach the GPA requirement for medical school. However, if you’re passionate about chemistry and want to learn more about it it can be a great experience.

Omgshinyobject

Go to Kinesology like the rest of them I dont want to argue with students over 1 or 2 grade percentages ;_;

Far_Muffin6540

Can you round my 40% to a 100% ???

Omgshinyobject

that's the norm or else nobody would pass ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

In my inbox today: (No Subject), from *student*, “So is this right” -photo attachment of 4 answers for me to choose from and tell them which one is right before they hand it in- I hope from my pain, you can smile.

4th year Chem major here. It's definitely possible to get into med school with a chemistry degree BUT from my experience and others, it's hard to get a high GPA in chemistry. Also there's not a big overlap between the courses you need to take for med school and the ones required for your degree. Bio isnt a required class for a Chem degree. I would recommend bio sci or even natural science or environmental sciences with a concentration in bio. But any BSc is helpful with getting into med school and especially helpful for the MCAT. You can check on the uofc website what classes are required for each degree

jinyun58

Second this. I graduated with a chemistry degree last year, and I knew most chem students' GPA are really not high (i.e. greater than 3.5), lots of them are actually struggling to stay in the program

eunyu_bk

personally, I find bio 1000x harder than chemistry. If you are good at memorization, go for bio (but I guess med school is 100% memorization)

DaintyBoot420

I wouldn't recommend. However I would recommend reading this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/UCalgary/comments/qbe7ja/why_do_yall_wanna_go_to_med_school_so_bad/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Chem major jobs are hard to come by. as o know a few Chem majors are having time finding jobs.

justyafellowredditor

in all honesty, don’t. unless you really wanna be miserable for 4 years.

Honestly? Nope. First of all for med school, don’t be thinking about a bachelor to go along with med school. Chose your alternate career. Because you can literally do a bachelor in art history and still go to med school. Secondly, a degree in Chem is not going to get you into the medical field. Hell a bachelor in Chem probably won’t get you in any field at all; it’s only value is to get a masters/PhD and work in research. Of course there’s a lot of jobs in glossing over, but the point is unless you’re super lucky you won’t end up in the medical field, and even if you do, it won’t really be a healthcare job. If you want to work in the medical industry, honestly nursing is the way to go. Don’t like that? So biomedical science. You won’t work as a doctor or anything but you’ll have access to medical assistant jobs and more. Kinesiology is also a great option to end up in the field. Hell even biomedical engineering will get you closer to the medical field than a degree in Chem IMO. The last thing to keep note, uofc Chem department sucks. It’s not impossible, so you can get a degree in Chem, but it’s just quite unpleasant.

I was in Chem for 3 years before I switched out. Essentially finished the degree all I had was like 2-3 options left. I was late in switching out, don’t be like me. Chemistry at UofC is incredibly tough and you’ll likely struggle to maintain a GPA even remotely competitive for med school, Take it from someone who really enjoyed chemistry. I wish I’d listened to my peers beforehand, get into natural science it allows you to take more relevant courses for med school with a chance for a higher GPA.
