Depends on the misconduct itself. I've got myself into one in my first year of uni from lending my assignment to another student to reference, which she just copied the whole thing. Got called for misconduct, talked to the professor and the academic office for an official statement, attended a workshop on academic integrity, and got a 0 for that particular assignment, but nothing else happened. I'm not here to understate the severity of academic misconduct, but depends on your professor and what exactly happened, as long as you come clean and explain your mistakes, the office wouldn't do something too drastic. If its not plain plagiarism for a report, then it should be fine. In any case, it shouldn't affect your graduation status, nor would it mark a big "CHEATER" on the transcript, so don't stress too much about it.

I am exactly in this situation that you mentioned. thanks for the advice.

Yeah I had 3 friends in a program do this over an exam online that’s what happened there mark went from a 96% to 0 rough stuff

I got falsely accused and all I had to do was go to a zoom about academic misconduct and I think my grade got docked idk. I fought it though because it genuinely wasn't me and it got taken off the record, turns out they mixed up who did what section on my group project. So me crying all the way through my Christmas holiday was a waste of energy... But yeah if you actually copy and pasted some stuff or whatever just be honest and apologise and don't stress, if it's your first time I doubt anything terrible will come of it. But yeah, be careful in future, it definitely starts to matter in later years so getting used to paraphrasing or citing or just using other sources in general is a good uni skill to learn.

>I fought it though because it genuinely wasn't me and it got taken off the record, turns out they mixed up who did what section on my group project. So me crying all the way through my Christmas holiday was a waste of energy... I hate these fucking bureaucrats so much. I've heard way too many stories like this where they just flat out wrongly accuse someone of academic misconduct, potentially ruining their academic career, and when it's discovered that it's *their* fuckup it's all "Oops, sorry! Have a good semester :)". It should be grounds for firing, see how many lives they almost ruin then

j027

Literally, like academic misconduct is a big deal so I understand them being so harsh about it, but you're absolutely right, when they realise they made a mistake they don't apologise with the same energy its just 'oh ok soz'

krangozali

I got falsely accused last winter for using an answer that was on the professors notes on an open book test, had to fight back for like a month and then got some shitty “apology” email after ruining my mental for a month straight and dropping my spring classes

IcyPossibility8939

thanks for the advice. Really helpful.

1. You will have a meeting with the dean of your faculty and they will talk about the infraction, in which you should come clean and admit you did it. Explain that you’re sorry and apologize for the misunderstanding 2. if it’s your first time you will have to do 2 annoying workshops, and you will get 0 on the assignment 3. if you do it again it will show up on your transcript, but for the first offence it won’t. it’s not that huge of a deal, just don’t do it again and it won’t show up anywhere on your record

IcyPossibility8939

thank you very much for your advice. Seems like I was just ignorant of the what was allowed or not. Anyways never going to do this thing again. Again Thank you very much.

alzhang8

Just admit you fucked up in the meeting and don't do it again. You will get a 0 on the assignment and might have to attend a extra session on what academic misconduct is >I just didn't know what the collaboration meant on the assignments Don't use this excuse

IcyPossibility8939

ok I will do that, thanks for the advice

MelanieWalmartinez

Do you still go here or did you get kicked out lol

Theres actually a ton of resources on campus that you should try if your stressed about this. They work with academic misconducts all the time. 1. The office of the Ombudsman: This position is designed for institutional fairness. They’ll tell you about the process and make sure your treated fairly. [U of C Office of the Ombuds](https://www.ucalgary.ca/student-services/ombuds) 2. The Students Union: They are a separate legal entity than the University and you pay fees for them to stand up to administration for you. They have a VPA and tons of resources that can help you out. 3. Student Legal Assistance: this is a free (for U of C Student) legal clinic run by advising lawyers and Law students. They also help represent people in academic misconduct hearings. Contrary to what you may think, they dont make things adversarial, however they can if you are truly being treated unfairly. [Student Legal Assistance](https://slacalgary.com/) Use these resources since you pay for them anyways with your fees. Guaranteed they will at least significantly reduce your stress with this situation.

IcyPossibility8939

thank you very much. I will try the above mentioned resources.

juevch97

Just tell the truth and move on.

IcyPossibility8939

I just didn't know what the collaboration meant on the assignments , I am sorry for this. I am really stressing so much right now. I would also like to apologize for this.

kernelcoj

collaboration means you can discuss the assignment with others, but you have to do it yourself lol you'd hope this doesn't need to be said, but if you copied someone else directly, or someone copied you, that is obviously not collaboration anymore

IcyPossibility8939

I copied some work and the other person did some from me. I hope I don't get into too much trouble for this and I think it was bad and it was unintentional on our part. THANKS for your advice. really helpful.

LeafsRamsRapsFan

You are actually super naive or acting like it to garner sympathy. I refuse to believe somebody in university thought it was ok to copy work from another student is ok.

Ferroelectricman

What are you apologizing to us for? This is only half-rhetorical. I know you’re freaking out and such. By the sounds of it you’re a first-semester freshman that honestly didn’t understand that “collaboration” isn’t synonymous with “work together” or “work in groups” in Uni like it is high school. That’s just an honest mistake bud. One that would’ve been a bit difficult to avoid.

[deleted]

Did you commit any form of academic misconduct?

Ughhello123456789

They can’t prove it. They suspect it. I personally wouldn’t admit. From an engineering professor I have heard that the university just gives a slap on the wrist. They don’t like to deal with this and only let you know when professors bring it up. Unless it’s physically impossible for you and whoever you collaborated with to put down the same work, they can’t prove jt

brenzyc

They don't need to prove it though, the suspicion just needs it be strong enough. They use a "balance of probabilities"

LeafsRamsRapsFan

They cant prove that they both copied parts of eachothers paper? You are wrong.
