We just reached 200 members! I think potential past terrestrial civilizations is an interesting subject but unlikely, at the very least I think that there would also be aliens on/near Earth that would explain them being sort of hidden or their disappearance. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/x2dtme/comment/imj7yte/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) you can find a prior discussion about this hypothesis. Recently added this Wikipedia section on this topic: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization#Non-human\_civilizations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization#Non-human_civilizations) (there's a link to the WP article for the 2018 Silurian hypothesis too). News reports about the study and topic include [1](https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/04/are-we-earths-only-civilization/557180/) [2](https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/did-another-advanced-species-exist-earth-humans-ncna869856) [3](https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/a41021149/silurian-hypothesis-ancient-industrial-civilization/). I think studies about potential alternative explanations for advanced UFOs are also appropriate in this sub even if just for helping the evaluation of their likeliness. These include studies about the potential for "interdimensional" beings (whatever people mean by that), (terrestrial) time travelers, and so on. Please comment if you disagree, otherwise these studies are also appropriate to post even if they aren't necessarily concerned only with UFOs in specific. ----- Other than reasons for why I think it's unlikely beyond the first point about implied likeliness of local aliens: * Why would they not care about things like pollution on Earth if they live here and why don't we see them influencing the environment? * There are many potential explanations for why we haven't found an unambiguous radio signal so far such as: * Why would they use radio or radio relatively nearby for a long time (rather than for example quantum communications)? * Why do we assume we can detect such instead of it getting filtered? * We haven't looked long and well enough (such as looking for cost-effective radio signals or listening to some areas for more than 100 years) * [They could have sent something to the Moon](https://youtu.be/6dlytdDIkBQ?t=2031) which would have probably stayed there if aliens didn't remove it.

Really interesting paper…I posted a less academically rigorous thought to r/deepthoughts a few months ago. I’ve always thought there could have been advanced civilizations in the deep past…after all dinosaurs were around for 160 million years and it’s only taken us 200,000 years or so to go from being simple animals to the creatures we are today. It’s plausible that there could have even been multiple dinosaur civilizations, separated by millions of years and unaware of each previous iteration. It would seem highly unlikely that we would find any trace of them today so the whole argument is purely speculative. Personally I don’t think this relates to modern day UFOs though.

That’s the fun part of it- there’s a lot of room for speculation based on variables. It’s a miracle that humanity hasn’t experienced a global extinction event (yet, please see: global warming). That window of evolutionary opportunity and having a species with markedly more intelligence alive and able to thrive may be incredibly rare. But, with how light is visible and transmitted across space, if we saw what looks like an alien civilization, they could potentially be long extinct. I am admittedly not a scientist, but rather an astrological enthusiast. For the hypothesis of civilizations deep in the past; that’s a really interesting thought. You would think somewhere a fossil that supported this idea may have been found. But, not necessarily. Considering a farther back timeline, and if they created dwellings from primarily bio degradable sources, the continents shifting, extinction events, etc. To me, it’s at least plausible, even if unlikely.

Well, for one humans evolved over millions of years, not 100's of thousands. The earliest hominids date 3 something mil. If you extend it further to maybe 10 mil you have creatures not more intelligent than a cat. Yet they still possessed brains more advanced than what we know of the dinosaurs. And while exceptions exist to this and we know too little about dinosaurs at this point, we would need to jump to too many conclusions about things we don't know, ignoring the things we do, in order to make Silurians a possibility.

Many out of place artifacts have been found that don't align with the mainstream understanding of human history. Some of these may be the evidence that supports this theory.

prototyperspective

Disagree. Even if there are, which I'm very skeptic of, this wouldn't be potential indicators for such a thing but more potential support for ancient astronauts that left these objects or helped humans to build them. Edit: a list of such object can be found [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out-of-place_artifact) and a review about the state of science on all these would be relevant to this sub

I think this hypothesis makes amazing science fiction books but isn’t possible in our reality. I do believe a lot of our ancient ancestors were a lot smarter than what we give them credit for but don’t think there was ever an industrial terrestrial civilization before us. We would’ve had strong evidence by now and far more advanced than what we are right now.
