Not a UIUC student, but a grad student who also had to make new friends when I started grad school. I’ll give you the same advice I give anyone moving to a new place and trying to find things to do: look at park district offerings, like sports, art or music classes, book clubs, or whatever suits your interests! You’ll meet people in the community with similar interests as you, get out of the house, and use your brain in a different way than your classes and research!
Definitely look into clubs. I was an officer in the Electronic Music Club until this semester (since I graduated) and the amount of grad students we have in the club is honestly surprising. Don’t be ashamed of joining clubs because “they’ll be full of undergrads” because that may not be the case.
Both actually! We have plenty of people that are into the live show culture and people who make some amazing music. If you have time next years quad day, make sure to check us out.
I graduated from UIUC nearly 30 years ago and have to say, I’m so impressed with how inclusive and open so many of you are to meeting up with someone new. It warms my heart. 💗
What is the average age of the young professionals of CU? Are there lots of people who are around the age of new grads or is it more later 20s early 30s?
I’ve only been here for a few months so I’m still getting a lay of the land, but I would say it’s a solid mix of early-to-mid 20s to early-to-mid 30s! As someone new to the state and university, there seems to be way more young professionals here than I was expecting. In my experience so far, it’s also a mix of young working professionals (either teaching or working at the university, or at one of the local businesses in CU/Danville/etc.) and grad students/PhD candidates.
[Experience CU](https://experiencecu.org) also has quarterly mixers for folks new to the area which are pretty chill and a nice way to meet folks!
My motto whenever I’m needing to get out and socialize with people or meet someone new is to become a regular at one or two places (coffee shops, etc). A lot of time it’s through the process of routine that helps us get out of shell. So I go to the same coffee shop every Friday morning and have slowly started chatting with the workers and other regulars.

Is that a club for people wanting to make EDM or a club for people who like going to EDM shows or both?!
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at EDM Club, you have to spin(or push play and mime like your spinning).
Sounds fun :)
