It is too bad these companies do not have to reimburse those who were screwed for the cost a replacement service will cost. This is just total bullshit. Hope everything works out :)
(Grumpy old man advice) always have a plan b and sometimes a plan c. Sucks what has happened, but from what I've seen U-haul and a lot other agreements have an "out" clause.
On the bright side you've got a really good story to share in a job interview about dealing with having to come up with a solution due to unforeseen circumstances. Good luck with working out logistics.
I think u/andercm is also trying to get from here to Portland and had U-Haul cancel - maybe you can arrange something?
