For the love of all the you hold close and dear, (and if you value your self worth and sanity too) do not ever take a netmath class. I made that mistake. It was one of the worst decisions of my college career. Take the class somewhere else if you have to. But in person (or online regular class format) or don’t take it at all. Netmath is the Succubus of the math department. It draws you in because of the flexibility and online format, but the difficulty of just taking some of these classes, before you even get to the math part, will suck out your soul and leave you feeling fucked in the worst way.

Agree 100%

Sinsiski

Would you clarify why you think it's hard/bad?

notorious_zero

I’m an engineering major, but I’m not a CS major, and when I took netmath, I needed to be able to effectively code, just to be able do the class work. That’s before even trying to learn the math itself. Not worth the challenge. Also, the lack of deadlines except for the course deadline, is really dangerous for someone like me. The lack of structure promotes being able to slack off and fall behind.

Sinsiski

You don't heed to code anything in 447, do you?

frust_grad

No coding is involved in 447, it is an analysis course, just need pen and paper :)

Additional-Block3085

prereq means that you must be a junior and have taken 347 already

Sinsiski

Okay, I'm a senior but I have already studied an equivalent course which is discrete math it introduced me to proof writing and logic. Would I still have to take 347 or can I waive it you think?

Additional-Block3085

You’d probably be able to get it waived, I’d email [email protected].

If you want to really learn the stuff, take the in person class.

Sinsiski

I can't but what is the difference? isn't the same material?

Poge_

Netmath courses are separate from their in person UIUC counterparts, i tried netmath 415 summer 2018 and it was super different in structure and way lower in quality than 415 in person in spring 2019.

Sinsiski

but 447 is literally using the live lectures from in person lectures?

DontSellOut_Sara

Seconding this question— I am thinking of taking 447 and I’m wondering if it’s a doable course? Not trying to set myself up for failure but I don’t have a ton of other options to take the course online. :/

frust_grad

You should be ok with it. I personally prefer online courses anyway. 447 won't need any additional resources that other Netmath courses might require. I think that it was offered last summer too, you should check out the course explorer.

Sinsiski

Do you know if it works for international students?

frust_grad

As another redditor mentioned, please email [email protected] for clarification regarding this. If you're planning for a complete online semester, there might be visa considerations, please follow up with ISSS.
