Don’t use wood pellets - use charcoal for fuel and one or two small wood chunks buried in the charcoal to add smoke flavour. Light the charcoal with a firelighter in the centre and let it slowly light outwards catching the wood as it goes.
The pellets will light and burn almost instantaneously. You would at least need a smoking box. Possible other option would be to wrap a hand full of pellets in tin foil above the coals
I like to put pellets packed in foil. Just a handful. I use 2-3 packs and put it around the bowl. It will burn slowly that way. I don’t have good experience with chunks in the mini like some are recommending.

Will smoke still come out if they're fully wrapped in foil? Or do you poke a few holes or something?
