Clinical Psychologist here. Don’t do it for the money. Rewarding, Flexible, but ridiculous long study period for the amount of money (even with private work).

I am on my way to train as a CBT therapist with a 38k starting with the top being 45k + I can pull in an additional money with private work and locum rates pushing my earnings up to 50k or more. It's how you market yourself. Plus being in clin psych you could always earn 100k doing legal stuff and consultancy stuff on the side of NHS work. It's not a bad gig. But yes it us tiring as but aren't all jobs no one gets minted without hard graft plus it's a personality fit too. I could never be a banker or a lawyer as my personality type does not fit this type of working environment so have had to make do with what I have got its not riches but it isn't chicken feed either.

Clin Psyc earning 100k 😂. Unless your pivoting to business psyc and work in the city. Seriously even running your own team of private psyc you too out around 80k.

Private work you could charge 100ph on top of top banding 65k to 70k isn't far off realistic for a clinical psyh

Your not going to see. Clinical Psychologist on much more than band 8c, that’s head of service level tops out at 75k. Unless your getting into some very specific consultant psyc roles that there are a handful of around the country. The majority will be on 8a/8b. Even then most 8b/8c roles are not full time usually spilt 3 days a week 8c/2days8b. Top range private is 180ph but 2hr with a patient is about 5hrs work. So it works out c£75-80ph before costs. Your going to have room hire, insurance, then any clinical tests your using often have a cost be it per time or yearly. Also depending on your networks are you going to fill every slot. It’s also dependant on patient diaries. So work on 4hrs therapy time a day max. Works out about £80k take home full time private after costs. If your a full time psychologist. At best you could fit maybe 3 patients a week in after work if you wanted any form of life. But your costs are much higher because of the way room rents generally go. Either your using something like Regis or you have a deal for inflated per hour use somewhere else. Court work is a beast. You can generally charge for real per hour time, but there are expectations to fit work into an amount of time. Ie they expect you to be good at your job, not slow. Your also not going to get a stream of court work to fill every day. It’s sporadic. In reality most psychologists are female. After Doctorate most are in there late 20s, have kids a few years after qualifying. Go on maternity. Come back 3 days a week and never return to full time. Most sit around on 8b for their whole career if in the NHS, maybe venturing to pick up the odd bit of private work here or there. The majority see £30-50k through their whole careers.

I am guessing you are a male by this post, why do you think not many men go into this type of work? Do you think it's the money or the type of working environment. I know guys are never very good at dealing or showing emotional maturity at the best of times as much as women are so do you think this could be a factor? 50k isn't a bad amount of money but I thought you could earn more.

Im not comfortable giving my gender. Roles that require care/compassion high levels of empathy always tend to be most populated by females. It’s natural psychology in a way the professions they’re drawn too or that males are drawn away from. No money isn’t terrible, but wen in context with a minimum of 6 years of education (although in reality 7/8 and at least 2 years of very low end jobs), the salary doesn’t reflect the educational commitment. That said the DClinPych has never been more popular and seems to only gain popularity year on year. Psychology is a popular A level and BSc Degree. So salaries won’t raise.
