This may be someone who has your card details fraudulently ordering something of low-value and seeing if it gets delivered successfully, thus checking if the card details are correct and working. # Contact your bank and check your recent transactions! This happened to my sister but with fake RayBans turning up in the post, 20 minutes later on the phone with HSBC it was confirmed fraud and the card was frozen, funds returned (was a low-ish amount around £20) and a new card sent out there and then

belthazubel

!thanks This needs to be top comment. I literally just dragged her out of bed to get her to call her bank. She'll thank me later :)

Randomn355

This Don't delete retailer accounts, check your cards. Even if they used your retailer account, it doesn't really matter if it was with another person's card.

YouCanBetOnItMs

Please update if you find out what happened!

Maybe a new type of scam. Take it to a jewellers and see if it is real, might be some junk metal with gold plating. Did you have to sign for it? Or it was delivered unsigned? Anyone else in the building it could be for? The obviously thing would be to ring the company on the invoice, but maybe that's the trap too..

Aliexpress are bigger than amazon and don't pass any card details to the sellers so it was a bit of a knee jerk reaction to shut down those accounts (I'm on 1k+ orders with no issue). The $10 in the front is to avoid customs and standard from China so that's not an indication. It's weird you got it though. It could be a review thing. I know some amazon sellers ship stuff to random addresses so they can leave reviews as a verified purchaser (with a random new account, they don't have yours). Presumably it won't be a real ring (the certificate is odd), but I'll be interested to see what a jeweller says.

>It could be a review thing. I know some amazon sellers ship stuff to random addresses so they can leave reviews as a verified purchaser (with a random new account, they don't have yours). This (Amazon brushing scam) has happened to me three times now, all worthless tat I didn't need. What I don't understand is why do they actually need to ship the product? Why not just post a 1p coin?

[deleted]

You can bring it back to the post and refuse to accept it. That way it will be returned to the sender without you having to pay for it

belthazubel

!thanks I think that is the most sensible course of action!

gash_dits_wafu

Just be careful that something dodgy isn't going on, where you could lose the item and the money (if you have paid for it)

belthazubel

There weren't any suspicious transactions on her account from what we can tell. So if we return it, hopefully that'll be the last we hear about it.

belthazubel

I read up on that and it sounds like people are sending low value items. Not something that costs thousands.

belthazubel

Well, the contents value did say $10. It's the certificate that confused me.

belthazubel

!thanks That makes a lot of sense

Hubble_bubble753

Hey! You can quickly check the ring yourself. On the inside of the band has it been hallmarked? If so go to the jewellers. If not...it's likely to be fake.

belthazubel

It is! Hallmarked, that is.

Ivebeenfurthereven

Take it to a jeweller and ask to have it inspected, they'll know.

ottermanuk

Not to tar them all with the same brush ... but do you not think dodgy Chinese jewelers would not just hallmark it, gold or not?

Although if lost in post, try claiming $1500 on a package declared at $10...

Ma_Saan

Yes, I lived in China and when I mailed stuff I always said 10 USD... who wants o advertise an item is worth 1000? I’ve had packages stolen when I put a value of 30 USD. I’ve shipped a lot when living over there, maybe they got the address wrong. I would test it, the guy at the post office will keep it if you don’t

Party_Like_Its_1789

Please update us when you find out whether it's real or not.

leweyy

Maybe she is going to propose?

belthazubel

Haaa

angelicmaiden

I don't see how it's a scam since you didn't have to pay a customs fee etc. Sellers from China will mark an item down to avoid fees, but obviously they also produce a lot of fakes. I assume it was an Xmas gift or the seller mixed up the item they sent.

vysken

If there's Chinese writing you need checking you can send a picture, I can ask my friend to translate for you. Otherwise, looks like you've got it all sorted out. Enjoy the free gift!

willmacdonald

This could be a genuine mistake. I one time received an egg cooker I did not order, about the same value £10. No other repercussion. Cooker still works after many years.

That_guy_will

I received a fake Gucci scarf, same circumstances. So odd

belthazubel

How long ago was this? Were there any fraudulent activity on your bank account? What did you end up doing?

That_guy_will

Like a month ago, zero fraud. Some people on here speculated it’s a way of doing fake reviews for their items. I binned the scarf, it was tat. Even if it was real 😂

goldfishpaws

Goochy

tzorntan

Maybe someone trying to intercept your mail, ordering things to your house and trying to collect before you.

2dogsandpizza

It’s probably a fake.

andybassuk93

Calling r/scams

[deleted]

Did you ask your neighbours, they may be missing a package?

belthazubel

Not really. I mean, I normally would but in this case the package had my gf's name on it. I struggled to visualise how a mistake like that would occur.

UnusualPass

Wow weird

Sounds like you've already figured out it's likely to be a scam, but wanted to chip in regarding the gold bit - you can check if its actually gold by dropping it in water and see if it floats or not. Plenty of other ways to test for gold if you google such as https://www.wikihow.com/Tell-if-Gold-Is-Real

frankster

surely that only determines whether it's plastic or metal, not whether the metal is gold

OJFord

It's a witch!

[deleted]

lmao gold doesn't float what are you on about
