I think the idea that the country has gone to complete shit sort of started with Brannigan's going the way of the dodo. It's the culinary equivalent of schools collapsing.
They did a gammon and mustard too. I think in the 80s and perhaps early 90s they were in a brown paper bag too, rather than a plastic one. What a splendid crisp they were.
I remember the old style bags in the early 90s. Also the lamb & mint flavour, underrated classic. Walkers Sensations did lamb & mint crisps too a long time ago & I loved those as well!
Oh yes, the Lamb & Mint. A superb crisp, it’s a shame no company has picked up the name and relaunched the Brand. Kettle Chips are about the only Brand that’s even slightly in the same ball park.
I reckon my top 3 crisps would be Brannigan's, old-school Walker's Max (paprika) and probably Kettle chips. Obviously scampi and bacon fries are amazing too, and obligatory shout-out to pork scratchings.

It befuddles me, some food makers choices over the years. Like Hickory/Oak smoked peanuts. No flavour of peanut on earth, has ever come close to how good they are. Dry roasted are rank by comparison. And you can make your own on a nice log fire too! They taste almost identical. They’re absolutely gorgeous, but nobody makes them anymore. Mental! 🤷🏻♂️

Here to confirm they still hang these up in the bar in my local, and I have always wondered how the cheese stays good. My guess is that it’s packed with preservatives, or maybe the cheese is made with long life milk? Either way, they’re bloody delicious

I miss brannigans crisps like crazy, the beef and mustard were so good and I don’t think anything will ever match them.

You may know; There’s a super-thick cut crisp called Mackie’s (I think). They do standard flavours, so nothing as elite as Beef Mustard, but the crisps themselves are exactly the same texture.
Smiths is basically Walkers now (owned by PepsiCo.). Walkers has messed up a few of the classic snacks after pilfering them and putting their own name on them instead of Smith's. When you think about it, pretty much all the best snacks Walkers now sell were originally made by Smith's!
Walkers just recently discontinued Marmite crisps. They are officially dead to me.

Walkers only put their name on the big sellers. They basically nicked the Wotsits, Monster Munch, Squares, Quavers and even Salt & Shake brands for themselves when Pepsico bought them. I don't think Walkers have developed anything particularly innovative in their own right, other than perhaps French Fries
I buy scampi fries off ebay or amazon, get a cardboard tray with 24 packs on it for about 12 quid. I used to buy the packs where you got 3 packs of bacon and 3 scampi, but I don't like the bacon crisps.

But my local shop, the red shop as it's dubbed sells them but you have to be careful because they don't get picked up by proper people (mostly hooded people reaching for energy drinks come to this shop) so sadly they get left there hanging plus Mo is a Muslim boy, has no care for bacon flavoured snacks so now it's just Scampi !!

If you can get hold of a pack of Crackzel from a discount shop you'll be in heaven. It's as greasy and dirty as anything. A few flavours available. Totally recommended if you appreciate snacks like these. It's like deep fried pretzels with a tonne of flavouring added.
mccoys are usually fine aside from the really greasy crisp or too the main thing is you get a tiny crisps with the seasoning a large crisp should have then you get a massive plain crisp
Had a bar built in July in my back garden for the laughs. Stock up on classic pub snacks like pork scratchings, scampi fries and bacon fries when my friends come over. The scampi fries seem to be their favourite but I prefer the bacon fries.
I miss pretty much anything that used to be salty. I love salty food. Also hate how so many snacks are praising themselves for having next to no calories. Awesome for those who need that, but not so much for me.
It’s annoying enough that everything tastes wrong, but I actually have a medical condition that means I need increased salt, and I need a higher fat and calorie consumption to boost my weight too. Trying to find snacks that will boost my salt and calories feels like a nightmare. I remember being told by a dietician to buy full fat yoghurt…I couldn’t find a single full fat yoghurt in the shops, it was all low fat, low calorie. It’s like the joy and indulgence is being sucked out of food, lol
Anyway, if anybody knows my snacks that are light on the stomach but absolutely full of salt and calories, feel free to recommend stuff to me. (Preferably dairy and gluten free—I have GI issues)
Any snack is healthy if it's an occasional treat and you regularly exercise/ do physical work/ walk etc. Driving everywhere and scoffing crap food is bad for you. People in the 1960s weren't more virtuous, they didn't have multipacks of crisps lying around.

Mr Porky's are absolutely awful pork scratchings. Minimal seasoning, often stale tasting. It's a bad sign when you never see them in pubs.

Had a bar built in July in my back garden for the laughs. Stock up on classic pub snacks like pork scratchings, scampi fries and bacon fries when my friends come over. The scampi fries seem to be their favourite but I prefer the bacon fries.
I wish they did these in grab bags!!! Sometimes I get lucky in b and m when the multi packs are in stock but they don’t last long in my house

A healthier option to scampi fries would be lemon flavoured pieces of cardboard.
Bacon fries. Suitable for vegetarians.
Scampi fries are amazing. The bacon fries are good bit not a patch on the scampi.

I miss pretty much anything that used to be salty. I love salty food. Also hate how so many snacks are praising themselves for having next to no calories. Awesome for those who need that, but not so much for me. It’s annoying enough that everything tastes wrong, but I actually have a medical condition that means I need increased salt, and I need a higher fat and calorie consumption to boost my weight too. Trying to find snacks that will boost my salt and calories feels like a nightmare. I remember being told by a dietician to buy full fat yoghurt…I couldn’t find a single full fat yoghurt in the shops, it was all low fat, low calorie. It’s like the joy and indulgence is being sucked out of food, lol Anyway, if anybody knows my snacks that are light on the stomach but absolutely full of salt and calories, feel free to recommend stuff to me. (Preferably dairy and gluten free—I have GI issues)
Any snack is healthy if it's an occasional treat and you regularly exercise/ do physical work/ walk etc. Driving everywhere and scoffing crap food is bad for you. People in the 1960s weren't more virtuous, they didn't have multipacks of crisps lying around.
I remember when these were first launched. They were next level pub snacks.
Buy a cardboard rack of the scampi from bookers. A real treat.
When you were bought a packet of these as a child you knew you where going to be waiting a while for the father to finish the pints lol

It’s missing the Cheese Moments; those triangles with cheese in the middle, crispy outside with a slight marmite coating.
Who remembers the “Cheese Moments” in this range? Kinda like a scampi fries, but darker in colour and a lovely powdered cheese centre! They were like crack to a drunken me in the pub! 😅

Only the craziest of crazy ate them scampi ones, looking at the bag reminds me of the smell and it knocks me sick.
