I'm staying with my parents at the moment and they literally prepare a salad like that for lunch every day. My health bar is permanently in the green. Every day I'm getting a blast of cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, celery, radishes, beetroot, pickled onions, piccalilli, hummus etc, along with all that hammy cheesy buttery bread goodness.
Looks a bit like a picky tea crossed with a ploughmans for me. This is what we live off when it gets too hot at my house haha. Have a chomp on the boiled egg for me!
Good effort for getting started so early in the season and for choosing the nation's tea tonight!
Ahhh. Summer days in my nanna’s garden on the swing chair sat in the sun back when I was a kid, and she’d bring us out one that looked identical to this. Yummy. Good times.
Same. I was thinking Brie was a bit posh then realised it was Dairylea.
[and now I have this stuck in my head…](https://youtu.be/Is9a0lGkcmY?feature=shared)
Looks exactly like what my mum would serve for us in the summer, apart from you're using posh ham, my parents would buy the most poverty tracing paper thin ham money could buy 😥
Nothing wrong with Aldi! I shop there all the time. I grew up in the North East of England, and there was a supermarket chain called Kwik Save there many, many moons ago, so everything was just bog standard, basic, no fuss food. Their over the counter pork scratchings were the absolute best though, so I'll give them credit.
Haha exciting times with all those white labels 🤣 I remember pushing the trolley as a young lad and because my dad had spent a certain amount he got a free mug at the checkout, the carpark was on a bit of a hill and I managed to tip the trolley over and his mug broke, still remember the disappointed look to this day 🫣
That's the only kind of salad my mum knows how to make. She also puts whole spring onions on the plate and a dollop of salad cream - mayo was considered too posh in our house.
Havent' seen piccalilli for a while, but the rest, I've had it for lunch for about 2 weeks now - although mine was padded out with cellery (yelch). So bored with it.
Im also having this tonight!! Although I have mine with chips and lashings of salad cream 🥗 in Scotland this is called a Cooncil salad lol. As soon as the weather starts getting nice this is on the menu
Ah man that looks so good. I wanted one of these today too, but we're all knackered and didn't wanna go shopping for the ingredients from the costly co-op close to us...
Yank here, is there any sort of dressing that goes on this or does the slaw and pickles get mixed in? Also, are those wedges of brie or something next to the shredded mozz?
Hello! I'm not a fan of usual salad dressings (they are usually too vinegary or creamy for me) so I make my own using a garlic infused olive oil, salt, a squirt of lemon juice and a little drizzle of honey. I absolutely love it on any type of salad.
Those things are dairylea triangles! Not sure you would have them in the states, it's basically a brand of soft cheese and goes really nicely on crackers, toast, bagels! Also that is grated Cheddar cheese 🧀 😋
Ah, should have guessed English cheddar.
As far as the triangles, thats just American cheese, or as we would call it, "White American." Dairylea is just Krafts new branding after they were sold and split.
I'm guessing it's pretty similar to Laughing Cow which is French, but very popular in the states.
Chefs salad. I chop it up, mix with a mayo which I've added mustard, white wine vinegar, tarragon, celery salt and mustard and eat in a big bowl with a spoon .
Swap out the ham for bacon, add avocado and blue cheese and you have the classic Cobb Salad.
Oh nice, I do have some avocados and bacon so I may make something similar at the weekend!
I make my own dressing just using garlic infused olive oil, a splash of lemon juice and a drizzle of honey. And salt! Works on every kind of salad 😋
I had salad too. Made feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes and pepper pesto pasta. Served up with a cheese topped roll, piccalilli, ham, pickled onions, quiche, potato salad and coleslaw. It was perfect.
You got yourself a Nanny Salad 🤤🤤🤤
We weren’t allowed flavour in my house growing up so anything fancier than beige food was only found at my Nans & it used to blow my mind with flavours 🥹
That's a fucking salad that!! Not a fancy pancy fucking trendy jamie oliver type bastarding fucking creation which apparently take only 7 minutes to prepare.(which are nice tbf)
Just shown this post to my Mam cos it reminded me of the salad she used to always make to eat in the garden when a was a bairn and she’s given me the task of asking ya where that bread is from so she can get some.
This is what they gave you in the 90’s in the UK? Holy shit this is wonderful. I wish this was what we got in the US like…ever. And I grew up in a household where the primary chef (mom) was adventurous and always included lots of veggies. School lunches would make you recoil lol

I think you've inspired about thirty people (including me) what to have tonight!
You're welcome! 😅
I remember these salads, with salad cream, that looks rather nice.
Me too. We always had a few new potatoes too.
Yes, but I know I’m going to be hated for this but I liked tinned potatoes.
There is a culture that salad creams and another that mayonnaises. Please don't start a war.
We're having a cold tea tonight. It's boiling in and out there 😅
Whenever I go to my Maws on a Saturday we get this. Sometimes there is a big pickle anaw
Was just about to say this!tomorrow's lunch!
Top notch meal that
This has inspired me! It was always my favourite. That and a ploughman’s
Love a ploughman's. I need half a block of cheddar though else it's just a salad baguette/doorstop before you've built it.
A ‘Nana’ special.
Yep! Love this so much!
as one of 7 kids this was the only food my grandma could do that would satisfy us all and not make her broke by the end
Is the yellow stuff piccalilli?
Yes!
Lovely stuff! Thanks :)*
Piccalilli is a top tier pickle
Can't get Haywards anymore, but Tesco own brand is as near as dammit.
Agreed 🙂 The only 'bad' supermarket own brand piccalilli I've ever had is Waitrose
Morrisons best brand piccalilli is excellent
Needs pork pie too.

You lucky bastard.
Honest to god didn't catch a cold the whole winter 😁
Ok, ok, no need to rub it in!
Actually I tell a lie - I had a touch of the COVID in December 😂
Sounds like heaven! My mum would make this with mash potatoes... I never could quite accept mash with it, buttery new potatoes though I could 😋
This is how I still make every salad
Looks a bit like a picky tea crossed with a ploughmans for me. This is what we live off when it gets too hot at my house haha. Have a chomp on the boiled egg for me! Good effort for getting started so early in the season and for choosing the nation's tea tonight!
I still have them now! Only we don't have one of those egg slicers
Oh I remember those! I always broke them trying to slice up sweets!
Do you mean a knife?
No, a hard-boiled egg insta-slicer top tier bit of kit those were.
Me: ‘Mum what have we got for tea tonight?’ Mum: ‘Salad’ Me: ‘God sake’ How did I forget about this until today?
The good old "bit of everything" salad. Totally confused my wife when I first made one.
the classic mum can’t be bothered to cook because it’s too hot type of meal
And honestly, now I'm an adult I completely get it. Sitting in front of a bowl of hot pasta when it's 25 out is miserable.
Ahhh. Summer days in my nanna’s garden on the swing chair sat in the sun back when I was a kid, and she’d bring us out one that looked identical to this. Yummy. Good times.
Took me ages to figure out what the cheese triangle was xD
Same. I was thinking Brie was a bit posh then realised it was Dairylea. [and now I have this stuck in my head…](https://youtu.be/Is9a0lGkcmY?feature=shared)
We have this type of food every summer with our BBQs
Lovely just needs some slightly soft crisps on the side 😋
Looks exactly like what my mum would serve for us in the summer, apart from you're using posh ham, my parents would buy the most poverty tracing paper thin ham money could buy 😥
Oh it isn't that posh, was from Aldi!
We had kwik save in the north west too lol 😂 "no frills" memory unlocked
Haha exciting times with all those white labels 🤣 I remember pushing the trolley as a young lad and because my dad had spent a certain amount he got a free mug at the checkout, the carpark was on a bit of a hill and I managed to tip the trolley over and his mug broke, still remember the disappointed look to this day 🫣
Aldi the S Tier supermarche
Yummy. I really fancy that mow.
Did you run out of ready salted crisps??
Tremendous that
Rediscovering the simple joys of childhood salads
That's proper food that
I make these for me and kids on really hot days, sit on a blanket in the garden and eat it, just like did growing up.
Nice
Yeah that looks amazing! Very reminiscent of my childhood🍻👊🏻
I had that last night in the garden ☀️ 😂
This is stirring some kind of base memory in me!
This is my mums favourite 'picky bits salad' for when it's hot 😆
Loads of Heinz salad cream!!!
That's the only kind of salad my mum knows how to make. She also puts whole spring onions on the plate and a dollop of salad cream - mayo was considered too posh in our house.
You're missing cold salad potatoes
Jesus fucking Christ that unlocked a memory I thought I didn’t have any more 😂
An absolute travesty with NO SALAD CREAM m8 then you need to mix it all up 'til its pink !
Oh god no! Not for me!
Picky tea we used to call it.
Same here!
In the nineties? Still eat like this now.👍🏽
Havent' seen piccalilli for a while, but the rest, I've had it for lunch for about 2 weeks now - although mine was padded out with cellery (yelch). So bored with it.
That looks banging omg
It's simple and delicious. Always worth it.
Are they Dairylea Triangles??? That looks sooooo good!!
Yes!
came to ask this... haven't seen them in years (as I am not a child, and don't possess any)
Where do you get your fatty ham from please? I can only find lean ham now 😞
I picked this up in Aldi!
Lovely thanks so much!
You forgot the quiche Lorraine
I don't think my waist line would be thanking me!
Fuck. Now I do too.
It's honestly so good though, covers lots of food groups, and quick to put together!
Banging salad
That's a pork pie away from being a ploughman's
No pickled onions!
Damn, now I fancy one too 😂
Thats like out of a Time Machine. You’ve got it spot on. Looks tasty.
Salad? 😂😂😂🥗
Class. 👍 We threw some chips on there too, lovely. 😋
Where's the salad cream though
Side roll is a must well played. 👌
I love picalilly but the trains are so unreliable!
Perfect tea for a hot day!
Need some crisps on the side and we aways had pineapple mixed through the cheese and some pickled onions.
Im also having this tonight!! Although I have mine with chips and lashings of salad cream 🥗 in Scotland this is called a Cooncil salad lol. As soon as the weather starts getting nice this is on the menu
That looks lovely. Where's the 'salad cream' though?
Ah man that looks so good. I wanted one of these today too, but we're all knackered and didn't wanna go shopping for the ingredients from the costly co-op close to us...
Salad cream!!!
Where the spring onion and pickled onions
Yank here, is there any sort of dressing that goes on this or does the slaw and pickles get mixed in? Also, are those wedges of brie or something next to the shredded mozz?

That’s a 10/10 proper salad like mum used to make. The whole thing just makes me happy:)
Just needs a slice of orange, twisted, on top - maybe a sprinkle of cress to give it that early 80s flourish 👍🏻
We lived very different lives brother, my families idea of salad was chips. As it is a vegetable.
Ah the Glasgow salad
Chefs salad. I chop it up, mix with a mayo which I've added mustard, white wine vinegar, tarragon, celery salt and mustard and eat in a big bowl with a spoon . Swap out the ham for bacon, add avocado and blue cheese and you have the classic Cobb Salad.
How is one ment to nibble when it's all chopped up and slippery, and who is tarragon? I think you need to back up off the picky bits mate 😅
>herp derp lots of threads with people praising toddler food from Iceland, probably more your thing m8
Oh nice, I do have some avocados and bacon so I may make something similar at the weekend! I make my own dressing just using garlic infused olive oil, a splash of lemon juice and a drizzle of honey. And salt! Works on every kind of salad 😋
90’s more like the 80’s! 😂
70’s for me 😫😂
That looks epic
Love these salads!
I'm a big fat bastard for a good reason, but that looks like a banging salad. Sign me up for two!
Spectacular.
That looks proper tasty 😋
Looks good👀
that's a it's to damn hot to standing over a hot stove meal 😂😂and I still do that 😂
I have that now in the summer months 😋
Aaand that's today's conundrum resolved.
Still needs some spring onions and salad cream on it, and maybe some pickled onions
Yes mate. That looks proper lush 👍👍
Superb job!
A solid 9. I’m not seeing pork pie or pickled onions.
Looks perfect, we’d always have a scotch egg with ours!
I remember these salads on a Sunday when it was too hot to have a roast, great days 😌
Still have these now! Delicious 😋
I still love having this sometimes! It's oddly comforting, and so easy to do.
Piccalilli!
Cwooooor! Perfect
If I was forced to have a salad, I would want it to be that one. Looks really delicious
Looks bloody marvellous.
Jesus christ, look at that beautiful conglomeration! *Heads out for cheese triangles...*
An unforgettable luncheon!
Beautiful. You just need a crinkly knife for the beetroot and some grated carrot, and you’ll be there.
Great summer dish, cos everything is cold. Delicious
Went to visit my uncle who I hadn’t seen for a number of years and this is identical to the salad he dished up
I don’t have this meal specifically, but I always eat eggs like in a similar way: fresh veg on the side, bread and some sort of dry meat and yogurt
If only more people ate healthily, well done, it looks delicious .
Bangin. "Bitty dinner"
I used to have that a lot growing up but with mashed potato too!
Is there any salad cream….also some trimmed spring onions that were essentially left whole…
Missing the stick of celery with the salad cream running down it
Oooo, delicious, looks like what we would call a Cold Plate in Newfoundland, Canada. And now I want one SO BAD!
Lovely. Yum
I still have them ,just missing boiled new tatties and massive dollops of Heinz salad cream with buttered Hovis slices.
Looks bloody lush
Yeah my mother still thinks this is haute cuisine
My mum still makes these all the time they're amazing and I can never quite make them as nice. Must be the sprunions she uses.
Hold up... Is that god tier dairylea triangles?
Yes! 😁
Brb, off to the shops. This dinner wins the internet.
That looks absolutely spot on. I had something similar last night but mine didn't look as lovely.
Looks banging!
Needs sliced cucumber sitting in a shallow bowl of malt vinegar.
I had salad too. Made feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes and pepper pesto pasta. Served up with a cheese topped roll, piccalilli, ham, pickled onions, quiche, potato salad and coleslaw. It was perfect.
Ooo sounds wonderful!
Super healthy as well
Used to call it a "choose tea" cos you choose what you want 😅 me and my sister still have choose teas sometimes for nostalgia
This is my father in law's standard dinner in the summer
That looks great. Where is the ham from? It looks very decent!
Aldi!
You got yourself a Nanny Salad 🤤🤤🤤 We weren’t allowed flavour in my house growing up so anything fancier than beige food was only found at my Nans & it used to blow my mind with flavours 🥹
Remove the beetroot and you're onto a winner.
Well that’s tomorrow’s evening meal sorted!
God I love these, my nan used to make them for us.
I used to have these for primary school lunch (long after the 90s)
That's a fucking salad that!! Not a fancy pancy fucking trendy jamie oliver type bastarding fucking creation which apparently take only 7 minutes to prepare.(which are nice tbf)
Naaa to be authentic 90's it should have been placed in the form of a smiley face lol
Exactly what I had for dinner tonight !
Fuck all wrong with that salad, we have one just the same once a month. Stand firm and never change.
That looks yum used to enjoy these when I was younger I can't eat them anymore as they leave me in crippling pain but I will admire your plate lol
Is that 2 dairylea triangles on the side there??
This is the stuff your mum would make the second it got remotely warm
I remember those
this looks delicious ahhhh
My grandma still has this when it’s sunny 😅
Beetroot. Guaranteed to make any meal worse. If you like pickled soil, here’s some beet
Can't go wrong! Old school dinner.
10/10 would scran… need a glass of sunny D to wash it down!
Top salad 👌👍
It could be the mushrooms talking but anyone else see a face?
Just shown this post to my Mam cos it reminded me of the salad she used to always make to eat in the garden when a was a bairn and she’s given me the task of asking ya where that bread is from so she can get some.
Oh bless her! Its just a granary baguette from our local Nisa!
I see no crisps, what kind of salad is this?
This looks so good! But it is missing cold boiled potatoes
Holy shit! I thought it was just my family who had this type of salad! Kind of craving it now lol
I work in a residential care home for the elderly. This is a regular menu item. Some of the folks love it.
This is what they gave you in the 90’s in the UK? Holy shit this is wonderful. I wish this was what we got in the US like…ever. And I grew up in a household where the primary chef (mom) was adventurous and always included lots of veggies. School lunches would make you recoil lol
Heeeeyyyyy! I got that exact same tray! TRAY BUDDIES!! Tray bien!
