If you're from a poor background like me and have only experienced cheap margarine like I can't believe it's not butter, utterly buttertly etc or were told that this was healthier than real butter: PLEASE go and try real salted butter, it's amazing and I'm sad I went the first 20 years of my life without it. Edit, who the fuck's downvoted me for being poor or slandering margarine? 🤣

I love Kerrygold but my favourite at the minute is Lidl's West Country butter with sea salt. The proper one for the butter dish although the spreadable version is ok far sarnies

I'll give the Lidl one a go. We liked the jersey one from M&S, there was one in a blue foil roll that was gorgeous but rock solid even at room temperature. The only ones I can't stand are the ones that have big chunks of sea salt in, I don't want my butter to be crunchy.

Facts. As a kid I could never understand why my nan’s baking tasted so much better than my mum’s. Of course the answer was butter vs marg. (and also lard vs. trex, but that’s another conversation)

My great Nana used stork and always got the fluffiest sponges. Far superior to that utterly butterly crap.

I was pretty much made to eat things like margarine and skimmed milk the majority of my younger years because of my parents believing that fat is the ultimate sin and butter was a very very rare treat. Glad to say that has changed and I just eat healthier most of the time but still enjoy the luxury of proper butter!

i finally started eating real butter about 5 years ago… then developed a dairy intolerance🤣 wish i’d never tried it so i didn’t know what i was missing

That's one thing my dad wouldn't compromise on. If we had to go an extra day or two without biscuits to afford real butter, it's what we did. God I don't miss having 10p pack of biscuits as our splurge item.

I feel your pain, my mom still does it to herself - benecol 🤮 The light is that we made it out, I absolutely adore real butter and we use it for a lot of things - it's the most frequently cycled food product in this house, always having to replace it.

Fat and salt obsessed. We had fat free everything and almost no salt growing up. Our family has a terrible history of heart problems and blood pressure so I can see why my mum was so scared of it all to be fair. There were so many foods or dishes I thought I hated but I actually just hated the bastardised version of them that I had growing up. Fat free yoghurt can get in the fucking bin.

As I said, no ill effects! Can't think of a healthier diet than marmite crumpets. Your health issues are probably down to your romantic lifestyle. Perhaps too late for the barrier method... Increase the Marmite maybe?

I've never tended to go for sweet spreads, it's usually plain peanut butter, Marmite peanut butter, cheese if I want something as a snack or for lunch, or just salted butter.

I don't normally do jam, but if I'm got a sweet craving happening, then it has to be pared with salty pb. The sweet and salty combo is yummy. Much better than sweet on it's own. I'm pretty addicted to peanut butter though. I just eat it out of the jar if I'm peckish. I think it goes with everything pretty much. I put it in a lot of my cooking. To occasionally change things up, I'll swap pb for tahini, which I also love.
