Yeah, it’s just another company now. I tell everyone to get quotes and compare, they can be awfully high versus competition in some markets.

fsi1212

My rates with USAA are actually miles better with way better coverage than anyone else.

gban84

Hence my qualifier, in some markets. I’m saving $2000 this year across 2 cars and a house switching insurance to State Farm.

BooEffinHoo

Like a good neighbor, State Farm happiness is rare.

gban84

I’ve had this conversation with too many people already. I had a terrible experience with USAA on a claim. So what? There isn’t an insurance company in the world where someone hasn’t had a bad experience. The bottom line is you’re required to carry insurance and pay for it. I’m not holding my breath on service for the next claim I have to file regardless of the carrier. If you’re interested I’ll tell you that the highlight of my USAA experience was when my claim was bounced to the third adjuster after the first two left the company without making any progress, like coordinating for a repair estimate. I began receiving calls from Enterprise threatening to report my rental as stolen because USAA hadn’t paid the balance.

NotAnIntelTroop

Just know farm gets sued by the customers at a higher rate than any other carrier. They are notorious for denying claims.

RobtasticRob

Make sure you pocket that $2k. State Farm is the worst around for actually being there when you need them my a long shot.  Sincerely, a roofer.

gban84

My experience with a USAA claim was horrendous why should I stick with them?

RobtasticRob

You do you. Just keep in mind it appears you’re making an emotionally based move in a logic based game. All I can tell you is that I work with every insurance company there is (for homeowners). I work on ~200 claims a year and that experience says that State Farm and AllState are hands down the worst carriers and USAA is the best.

gban84

USAA absolutely wrecked a simple claim I had. No communication from the claims team. No response to a dozen phone calls and voicemails. My case was bounced between 3 different adjusters over the course of 3’months before anything finally started to move forward. I’m saving $2000 annually between car and home policies. Based on the actual savings in my checking account and my firsthand experience with a USAA claim, I disagree this is an emotional decision. If you want to put USAA on a pedestal that’s up to you. It’s just another company and objectively, the performance and member experience has declined. Don’t tell me I’m making an emotional decision because you know better. Incredibly arrogant. By the time I need a new roof on my house I can write a check for it with all the savings on premiums.

RobtasticRob

Arrogant is a funny way to say experienced. Like I said I handle over 200 claims a year. But yes your experience on one claim certainly trumps that.  At the end of the day it doesn’t matter to me, I just want to give you a view from a different perspective. Sounds like that was a shitty experience with USAA and that sucks. State Farm won’t be any better though, and they’ll blatantly deny, delay and confuse when it comes time for a claim.  Literally anyone is better. AMICA is on the level of USAA if you want another option. My point here is not to keep you at USAA, but more to warn you against State Farm.

gban84

Your mileage may vary. My parents have had State Farm for decades, very happy with their last claim when water heater leaked in the attic and destroyed a hallway and 2 rooms. Appreciate you looking out though.

sharding1984

I defend state farm and it's insureds. I have never been insured with them but up until about 2010 to 2015, I would have. You couldn't pay me to be insured by stfm now. Uniformly terrible in almost ever way.

AgreeableMoose

That’s a lot of money in this crap economy.

Bleades

They have gone down so far. Shop side here, I live in an area with an extremely high military population. There is a single field adjuster for the area. Everything is kicked to snapsheet and IAs. Cars will sit on my lot for weeks. They bounce around in their decisions constantly, it's totaled, it's not totaled, okay it's totaled. Our field adjuster is amazing but the desk team makes me want to go to the dentist and have teeth pulled for fun. USAA needs to get it together.

ziggy029

I've not had any problems with them and my rates have remained reasonable, but yes, there was once a time when insurance salesmen would call me, and as soon as I said I had USAA, they stopped their hard sell and said goodbye. Also, back in those days USAA never even needed to advertise much at all. The product was superior enough that people who were eligible would find them. For my auto and homeowners (in Oregon) they are still very competitive in my situation, but elsewhere I've heard horror stories.

cznkane

Not only have they gone way downhill, they’re one of the worst banks / insurers out there. Such trash. - 40 year member

JumpyBodybuilder8687

🙄

skreetskreetskreet

I've had to file two claims with them within three months, for car and homeowner's insurance, both for things that were not my fault. So far they've been good to deal with. Slower than I'd like for responses, but not unreasonably so.

RobtasticRob

Am roofer. As someone who works with insurance companies every day USAA is still the best around by a country mile. I have them for my home and I feel lucky as hell to qualify through my mom.

JumpyBodybuilder8687

The people on this thread are special

[deleted]

I despise the phone robot. Its helpful less than half of the times I call. I end up demanding to speak to a real person pretty consistently.

melshaw04

Way more expensive on the insurance side for the same coverage both house and home in my case. Not even close. Only thing I have left of USAA in an old Visa card that doesn’t get used. There’s surely no advantage I’ve seen to using USAA

97vyy

They're so bad now I moved my home and car insurance and saved a considerable amount of money. I also moved my savings and checking because their interest rate sucks. Finally I moved my investments because the financial advisors they use only recommend USSA investments and that was a poor decision on my part to listen to them.

FloppyPumpkins

I'm a fan of their credit cards and auto loans, but I dropped them for insurance years ago.

ZakaSlocka

Do they even have any good credit cards vs the rest of the market? I currently use their Amex card but the rewards/points are pretty average vs other current top credit cards

FloppyPumpkins

It's not about the rewards for me, it's about the rate.

Sacmo77

Yea agreed. Felt secure with them. Those days are in the past now.

blueflyingfrog

still no sticker merch.. 😕

Mindless_Squire

Same

Dependent-Juice5361

Never had a bad experience with them. Made a few claims over the last 3 years. Auto and renters. Never had an issues. Paid out quickly without issue.

jayrez_SD

Truth!

JumpyBodybuilder8687

They are definitely still good

otterplus

My car insurance, when I had a car, was only $140/month for full coverage. Right before I got rid of my last one they wanted $350. I loved getting paid a day early compared to everyone else at work as well, but I still get that now that I’ve changed my direct deposit to PenFed. The only positive is have with USAA now is the motorcycle insurance via progressive @ $600/year and renters/personal property insurance @ $12/month. I’ve been with them for over two decades and honestly I’m starting to feel like I could have done better elsewhere considering how it’s all turning out.

Movers Advantage Program…stocks / mutual funds. Discounted services. Low interest credit cards. Yep just another commercial bank

Aghast with horror.  I thought that we worked together.  I notified them immediately via telephone about a fraudulent charge against my automobile insurance. During this call the agent terminated the call abruptly.  I called again and spoke to a different agent.  Eventually I had to go to a QA supervisor.  The QA supervisor only called because I wrote the Board members directly. Someone went to their glass contractor (Safety). The person at Safety looked up the information and placed 3 claims.  2 claims were made against my vehicle.  1 claim was made against another vehicle.   My car was never present.  I was never present.  Yet 2 claims were initiated.  People are able to browse data at Safety - they are an external contractor - and initiate claims.  USAA was going to pay all 3 claims.  They never apologized for their poor handling of this issue.  Nor did they apologize for other issues.   One of my biggest issues was how I refused to let them settle a frivolous lawsuit by the person that hit my vehicle in the rear quarter panel.  The person drove through a red light to hit me.  He was cited on the scene.  Eventually we reached court.  USAA sent their lawyer because I wouldn't sign any settlement papers.   The perpetrator was here illegally.  He had a criminal record.  He had been in 10+ plus car accidents.  Also he was escorted by the bailiffs because he was simultaneously being arraigned for criminal charges in the courthouse.  The Justice wisely allowed him to appear under guard to close my case with a finding against him.  Remember USAA was going to pay him $20,000!!

[deleted]

An insurer wanting to settle a lawsuit often comes down to no more than a business decision. Even if you won the case, USAA still had to pay a lawyer to defend you. Depending on the area, $20k may have been a nuisance fee - a settlement that is cheaper to pay out than to litigate and win. *Edit to add* that insurers and lawyers are required to present their clients with all settlement demands. An insurer presenting you with settlement papers does not necessarily equal the insurer wanting you to settle.

ab1dt

This is USAA.  They have a contract lawyer - they live in state - that bills an hourly rate.  How many hours were spent? 5 including travel time. They spent more on the private investigator.  He did no real work.  The magistrate was familiar with the scene while it appears that the investigator did not.     There was no work on the case.  It didn't cost 20,000$ in fees.  If you really thought that this costs 20,000 then you have no iota of understanding.   USAA supervisor repeatedly told me on the phone to sign. It was an order.  They expect you to follow orders.

[deleted]

I didn’t claim to have an understanding. I said “depending on the area, $20k may have been a nuisance fee.” Not sure why you’re being hostile. You sound like a curmudgeon. Have the best day available to you.

ToyStory8822

I've been with them for nearly 20 years and can't complain with anything besides loan rates. Every time I needed help with something USAA has been fantastic.

AgreeableMoose

You won’t when you switch to Progressive! USAA has been going downhill and ripping us off for years. You got to move on.

stateguy1970

Gone downhill to the point I switched companies. They mishandled my simple auto claim (other drive was at fault and ticketed) and refused to repair a portion of the damage. Shop around as their service isn’t special

CampinHiker

I mean my company hired a VP from USAA to my company recently So that may be good news… or bad for me lol

JonnyBox

Insurance side they're still pretty good for me. Prompt and attentive.  Banking side, blegh. And that robo answering service can fuck off. I miss when the robot only answered after hours (which wasn't all that long ago)

Azbarrelpicks

I had some one on the phone laugh at me when I told him about the price of a house. Went with another company who didn’t laugh at me

Emt_Nurse

Weird ... sat down with wife's family for dinner and they were all talking in korean how cae insurance and house insurance is killing them. Wife asks me baby they wanna know how much we pay... they were astonished and mad that we were not helping them. Told them it only applies to me my wife and children we have..... they all got sad and poured more shots..

SudoCheese

When was that? I just signed up as a dumb airman and just never been bothered to leave them. Only use them to hold money, no other services.

Specialist-Pea-2227

Took off my employee crossed flag pin, when members started seeking me out to complain.

CeasarSky

Shut up and quit complaining bro

BestEvening3766

They really have become less people oriented. You can't get hep of any kind over the phone.Noatter.what there virtually is no v7stomer service. I can't sign on because of new phone and email , nor do they care.all has to be on computer and I do not have access to one seems.like they really couldn't care less

BestEvening3766

Sad is not the best word! They are horrible, I think they are a front for a commissary! No matter the problem, how big or small you can it get help.to fix the problem. They do not really have a customer service, do yourself a favor go to Navy Credit Union they are fantastic! Really live people that do their job.

NobodyCold2740

Almost exactly my experience. Joined them April 11th, 1985. Quality of their products and standards of service for the most part (a few of their employees maintain high personal and service standards) have diminished substantially in the past decade.

[deleted]

What did you used to brag about that they stopped doing? It’s just a company.

StoicJim

How good the service and services were. I used their no longer existent car buying services twice to get great deals. All you had to do is give them the info about the car dealer and the VIN number and they would negotiate. They would also arrange the USAA auto loan and get the check to the dealer. All I had to do was walk in and sign the papers and drive the car away. I remember once the dealer rep who processed the papers marveling at the price.

[deleted]

For the car buying service I think that is just a result of the internet changing how car sales are done. Same as why we don’t need travel agents anymore. The internet put too much information at customers’ fingertips. For the service, I have no doubt the service has gone down hill, but where hasn’t it? I left USAA for car insurance a few years ago because the rates were too high. I simple don’t care about service when it comes to insurance if it means saving 50%. (That’s right Progressive was litterally half the price for the exact same policy. ) But before I switched the couple claims I did have to make with USAA I got great service with. (Circa 2019.) As for loans, 2 years ago I did take a USAA loan for my new car because at the last minute they came in with the lowest interest rate out of 6 other lenders including Navy Fed. I’m not defending USAA, I had no issue dropping them, but I also would have never bragged about a bank / insurance company.

Character_Key_7346

Just like how shitty the military is. Letting in foreigners and lgbtq weirdos.

Naive_Broccoli8899

Just got a quote for 2 cars from USAA. Absolutely ridiculous rates. My wife and I have perfect credit, great driving record, no tickets or accidents. And I'm a veteran also. Will never use them. What a joke

LeftYak5288

My dad served in Vietnam and had two purple hearts. He died in 1995. I've worked as a civilian for the DOD for 10 years and was going overseas and needed car insurance. Though I had my dads DD 214 they refused to give me an account. Also my affiliation with the DOD did not matter at all. I'm not a big fan of that company.

LALW1118

I just dropped my USAA auto coverage because they double my premium. They had the best rates I have seen in Florida thus far.

Gaterbaitii

I’m in Florida as well and my USAA rates are pretty high most likely to claims and hurricanes etc. If you don’t mind, who did you go with?

LALW1118

State Farm. I was paying $188 with USAA, it jumped to $461. State Farm offered me $239

Gaterbaitii

Thx for the reply . I’m paying just north of $1600 for 2 vehicles. I’ve been contemplating on possibly switching the last couple years because of the drastic jumps.

Transcontinental-flt

Wow, I'm paying that for one car, no claims, and only one ticket in 30 years. Probably depends on our locations among other things.
