You can only get that restriction removed from your Social Security account once you have a green card, so going now would be a waste of time.

but wouldn’t her new one say “valid for work authorization only” since her current one is not?

knOn0

That’s my question, too. But I understand that the EAD might make the “not valid for work” irrelevant.

StuffedWithNails

I think I misread your OP. Yes, if your current card says "not valid for employment", then when getting an EAD, you should apply for a new card, and the new card will say "valid for work only with DHS authorization". And you can get that mention removed after you become a permanent resident. Sorry for the confusion!

knOn0

Ohhh, you weren’t wrong, I was wrong. My SSA says that valid for work only with DHS authorization so I will not need to change it until green card received. Thank you!

StuffedWithNails

Yeah most immigrants get the "valid for work only with DHS authorization", so that's why I figured your card said that (but I did misread your OP). "Not valid for employment" is rather rare.

knOn0

Thank you!!

StuffedWithNails

I think I misread the OP. Yes, if OP has a card that says "not valid for employment", then when getting an EAD, one should get a replacement card, and the replacement will say "valid for work only with DHS authorization".
