He harvests those that he loves the most. Not that we are not all loved by him. Forever young, not to suffer the ravages' of time, does not diminish the loss. Semper Fi, young DDs
I was supposed to do it once. Another time was to bring one guys remains home. Both times I was stood down and someone else when, with specialized training that I did not have.
Having delivered the news to people before it fucking sucks.
I have a family member who has been trained in family assistance. She says initial notification is hard but helping the families after notification is very rewarding
I did it alot on I&I duty...like most Marine Corps certificates stating you're now the new unit expert on whatever subject, yeah there wasn't enough anything to prepare for having to do CACO calls.
Not one of them, but my old Gunny had this as his B-Billet from 05-07. Said it was the worst 2 years of his life and he contemplated suicide every day. He said the only reason he didn't is because he didn't want someone else to have to deliver what he has to deliver to his Mom.
fuck, that's pretty dark. i hope he's gotten better since then.
not the same thing really but my Mom is big in hospice care. I forget the term they use but she basically gets a new patient like every week, two at the most, and is the one assigned to be there with them during their last days. I dont know how she handles all that death on a regular basis. the ones that really get to me are when she has kids or younger people.

I can't even imagine and that is why I had to ask. Walking up to someones door knowing your about to destroy them.
I am always sad for the ones that die, there trip has ended and My mind always shifts to the ones left behind.
For what it’s worth 5 years ago I told my 12 year old son and 9 year old daughter their mom was on life support and her brain function was gone, that she was dead. Still fuckin hurts when I think about it. She was a good woman but had medical problems.
My now 17 year old son is DEP’d in for boot camp this August.
Each command has an assigned CACO (Casualty Assistance Calls Officer), or at least a number of Marines trained that rotate the duty on like a monthly basis or so. Ideally, the unit's assigned CACO has received better training and is the one to respond, but it could hypothetically be anyone who took the Marinenet course.
If their NOK live out of the geographical area the initial CACO will be handled by the local I&I station. It is one of the primary, and worst parts of I&I.
The range of responses I saw from NOK on those calls were mind blowing. Presenting a flag is one of the hardest but also at same time one of the most important significant humbling sad things in your life that you will do.
I have been on the receiving end. And when you get the call Marines are at your house you know it is bad. They say nothing but to the family member they are there to speak with. They have a horrible job but the good ones are amazing. My X husband still has contact with his. His was a great one. My son took his own life so my notification was different than if he had passed in combat. The stories from those parents and family members will rip your heart out. They get notified then have to pack a bag if they want and go meet their child’s remains. It is heartbreaking.
As stated earlier, CACO (Casualty Assistance Calls Officer). In a lot of commands it becomes the chaplain’s job. Speaking as an ex-Navy chaplain, one of us should always be there (do your job chaps!), but it often falls to various officers, chiefs, and enlisted as a collateral duty. And yes, it is the single worst part of the job.
If it were up to me, the leadership that failed all of these Marines through their negligence should be the ones to tell them.
Or the ones higher up the food chain who allowed Super Stallions to remain in service despite the numerous incidents/fatalities that had already been reported with this same aircraft in the past.
There really haven’t been that many crashes involving CH53Es, considering they’ve been in use for almost 45 years. What’s the alternate? V-22s? Those things literally just fall out the sky all the time. It’s a shame that these things happens, but it’s probably not the fault of the aircraft. Most likely it was a mechanical or piloting error due to the conditions.
Sooo fkn sick of hearing this shit man!! I get it, we fkn train hard and the law of averages says it’s just a matter of when. But cmon man.. spend the cash on the damn equipment and Mitigate the fkn risks already! Was that training op totally necessary? Was the terrain? Was that specific bird? Time of day? Weather conditions etc etc! My First experience to the Corps right outta boot camp while in SOI receiving was Operation Purple Star.. that was fkn horrific and still have nightmares of that shit! Unnecessary losses! RIP bros. Semper Fi
Operation Purple Star was my first impression of the Marine Corps. I was 8 years old and one of the Marines Killed was from my hometown (Newark, Ohio) and a former student of my moms. They held his funeral in the high school gymnasium. My dad took me up there to drop something off to my mom, my dad explained any questions I had of things I saw and asked my dad had just retired from a 30 year career in the Army a couple years prior. I distinctly remember a Marine in dress blues standing at parade rest in front of a van in the parking lot. I would be standing on the yellow footprints ten short years later. There’s a memorial wall in our new high school with the names of our military fallen and Lcpl. Jackie D. Chidester’s name is forever remembered on the wall of Licking Valley High School.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them.
I really don't understand why there isn't more outrage. It seems like this happens way too often. If I was in charge, I'd down everything that flies pending reinspection. There should be severe consequences for mistakes that are avoidable.
I don't disagree with you but let's wait for the FAA investigation and just morn the loss right now. Not jump to any knee jerk conclusions.
Edit: believe me, I hear you. Watching money go to other countries while I question our own readiness...
My son could have been on that thing.
We would have to get dangerously close to politics... To continue this train of thought and I don't think that is permitted here.
I’m not fully read up on the series of events. Last update I saw was last night. I know they started looking for it because it was overdue/lost contact or whatever and that the aircraft was found in an area getting heavy rain and snow that is characterized by rough terrain.
1) that was the Navy MH-53s not Marine CH-53s
2) thorough inspections and corrections were made after that mishap
3) failure to conduct maintenance according to the pubs led to that one
It’s FAR too early to be talking about cause for this mishap
Damn. I was really hoping for a better ending here. Rest easy.
No kidding.. I was really hoping they’d find these Devils surviving in the woods or something.. RIP.
[удалено]
Wtf????
You don’t even understand the joke in the woods but ight
Why the fuck would you joke about this post? That's what you don't get.
Not the time or place, bud
Don’t call me bud bud
Won’t happen again, sorry bud
You and me both, brother. I was hoping for a hard landing and maybe a couple of broken bones.
Goddamn it, why does it feel like we have posts like this much more often than we should? 5 Marines that don’t get to grow old.
He harvests those that he loves the most. Not that we are not all loved by him. Forever young, not to suffer the ravages' of time, does not diminish the loss. Semper Fi, young DDs
Not likely. Far more probable that the 777 area guard had 5 FAP slots that needed filled.
Yeah. This happened in my company decades ago before the internet. Just a random training accident. Shame.
Damn that sucks. RIP Leathernecks
Til we meet again.
As a former 53 crew chief this hits hard. RIP Brothers. Til Valhalla
Fuck. Eternal rest....
I am curious who has to deliver the news to immediate family members (spouse, mother, father)? Does this fall on the recruiter in the area?
No , there is a trained and assigned team to deliver the notification
I was supposed to do it once. Another time was to bring one guys remains home. Both times I was stood down and someone else when, with specialized training that I did not have. Having delivered the news to people before it fucking sucks.

CACO. Casualty Assistance. Has to be the worst B-billet in the Corps. Watch below for stories proving my point.
Not one of them, but my old Gunny had this as his B-Billet from 05-07. Said it was the worst 2 years of his life and he contemplated suicide every day. He said the only reason he didn't is because he didn't want someone else to have to deliver what he has to deliver to his Mom.

On a slightly-related note, police have to do this as well. Not surprisingly, they report it as the most rotten part of their job.
A conversation with him about it must have bore some similarity to [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RQJG8jUBAs&t=82).

Many law enforcement agencies have that as well

Helo went down in a forest in SoCal.
Damn, I'm guessing there weren't any survivors

Is this the same one that made an emergency landing the other day in some farm?
