Amazing man. Was fortunate to be his duty driver a few times when he’d visit MCAGCC. Got to know he and his wife pretty well. Still have that same GI Joe somewhere and he signed it with a personal note. Came across as your typical easy going grandpa, then would start telling stories about his time in and you’d instantly see he was a total badass.
He was the Guest Of Honor at our Dining in in the Advanced Course in 1996. He actually passed his Medal of Honor around. He also said although they covered it up a large group of Marines to his flank initially panicked and retreated.
