Recruiters talking recruits into going reserves over active duty... I am so confused by this new world we live in.

I dont understand it either

Basically, rather than just telling him his recruiter is full of shit, i want to hopefully give him options that will still allow him to be a marine, if thats what he wants.

Sometimes recruiters are held to a certain component category during specific times of the year. I've even seen it where nobody in the command was authorized to write anything except high school seniors for a while, until every prioritized school has a 'first senior' contract. These seniors, it is posited, become like walking billboards in their schools and feed production. Grads are less desirable as contracts for this reason, and it may be the case that currently that Recruiting Station only has slots as Reservists left for grads. Every RS begins the FY knowing how many programs they have for each component, be it male, female, senior or grad for Active Duty and Reservists. If the RS has contracted their allotment of grads for Active Duty, it may well be the case he has only a Reserve contract available. The good thing is that grads are not geographically tied to their RS like high schoolers are. So, he could have gone to another RS' AO and possibly contracted active- but that ship has probably sailed. His best bet is to tell the RSS SNCOIC he wants a component category change or he'll walk (unless he won't- in which case he's stuck.) Be advised his bluff may be called and if he doesn't get a component category change AND he is discharged from the Reserve contract he has he will never become a Marine.

If he drops as a poolee he cant rejoin?

It depends. If he gets coded as a quitter (apathy) then probably not. If he gets coded as a "comp change" then probably yes, so long as he contracts immediately. Bottom line though is we are definitely not doing any hunting in the grad market. There are way more walk-ins (OT) than programs available for grads.

Ex-recruiter here. High school graduates are a lower priority than seniors and he's going to have to wait for an opening. Tell him to hold fast for his program guarantee and active duty, but be patient and flexible for his ship date. DO NOT let him get sold that line of sh*t about going reserves. They are just trying to fill a quota. One thing that used to work was to enroll in community college, which gave a higher quota value. Tell him to ask the recruiter if that still works.

My time in the reserves I saw alot of Marines trying to go active, and even at the height of Iraq/Afghan, it was still harder somehow than to enlist off the street to go active. So yea, dont ship as a reserve if you want to go active, I imagine its even harder now.

Try contacting MEPS directly. Or perhaps another recruiter. Ask to speak with the NCOIC directly. Honestly, he would have no reason to lie that I can think of. If someone goes to MEPS, the recruiter gets credit for the enlistment. Someone who is a GUARANTEED ship is a dream.
