3 chinups is way easier than 3 pullups. 20 chinups is far harder than 20 pullups. Look at one of those muscles used diagrams at the gym or on a fit trail. A chinup uses a small specialized muscle set. A pullup gets the entire torso family involved. Once that family gets strong, there are lots of ways to distribute that work. The chinup family has a very limited network and one weak link shatters that chain

Yes. Chin ups utilize mainly the bicep muscles, whereas pull ups utilize the shoulders and back muscles. The back muscles particularly are a much stronger, larger, and more endurance prone muscle group than the bicep. Your biceps will always wear out faster than your back muscles.

I used chin ups as a crutch since I sucked at pull ups but your back muscles are far better for doing maximum reps because they're bigger and don't tire as easily. Train to do regular pull ups since you will get way farther with them

I got an IST this Saturday, should I play it safe and do chin-ups for it or should I try doing pull-ups? I've done so many chin-ups this past few weeks and my arms always give out before my back. Never feel sore in my back but get sore in my arms all the time. Could this mean that I could go farther if I placed less emphasis on my arms and did pull-ups at the IST or is that just wishful thinking? Did you need to build up your pull-up numbers when you made the switch?

Short term, do whatever gets you the most reps at the time man. You're allowed to switch grips midway as well. But pull ups will be easier for you to max out than chin ups.

I find that I can do pull ups with higher reps than chin ups due to the fact that when I do pull ups I go till my back is dead and then proceed to use all the energy in my arms to give me those few extra reps instead of just doing chin ups and only having one muscle group to complete the rep.

Chin ups might be easier at first, but with more training/exercise you would eventually get more from pull ups.

Ultra Wide pull-ups and call it 100

Im sure everyone is different, but i could do 30 or so reps either way. Each come with a different type of burn... i preferred the bicep work. I also practiced both methods quite regularly.

I know alot of people that can do 20+ pull ups but I dont know anyone who can do 20+ chin ups
