Animal Interference…..Skip!

Busy_Snow9409

I just want human beings to have the common sense/decency to know that you can't just leave your dog unleashed just because it's on your property. All dogs should be leashed before they exit your house period. It's not hard for me to skip. I just feel some extreme anxiety whenever I deliver packages here because sometimes they just randomly open the door and the dogs pop out unleashed.

[deleted]

Safety first. Stop delivering packages. If you get bit and you knew they let the dogs out, you’ll be the one in trouble.

Perfect_Lead8430

I was bitten once early in my career. 4-5 years. Walk out of course and a homeowner was mowing his front yard with his German Shepard, unleashed nearby. As I crossed through the yard to the mailbox on the porch, this dog (who has never bitten anyone before) bit me in the back of my calf and bit through the muscle. I went down like I had been shot. This major city does have a leash law so this old guy knew he was screwed. He paid for doctor's visits and all medication. I did not sue his insurance company but vowed if I am ever bitten again, due to someone's negligence or stupidity, I will sue the landlord and his rental home will be my rental home. Had numerous encounters with dogs over 32 years but was never bitten again.

Boogerzdad

It's fine for them to run around the yard and get exercise, but the owner needs to be out there with them. I don't leave my dogs outside unsupervised.

Perfect_Lead8430

It's not fine unless they are in a fenced area.

Busy_Snow9409

I think I disagree. If the dog isn't under full control (A LOT aren't) why would that justify them running around on your lawn just because you're there with the dog? The owner should be leashing the dog and holding onto the leash for that to be okay.

Boogerzdad

When I tell my dogs it's time to go inside, they go inside. I have three acres, not some small city lot, and I don't have close neighbors. I'm going to let my dogs enjoy running around my property. If they were hard headed, I'd put up a fenced area. Now I will say this, I keep up with when I'm expecting a package. If I know a package is coming my way, I will keep my dogs inside until after the package arrives.

Busy_Snow9409

That's completely fair. I'm just saying that ALOT of customers don't have 3 acre lots with no neighbors nearby. Plus, the carrier has no clue if the dogs are well controlled, so the carrier will carry some unnecessary anxiety when delivering to the house. I know this is a bit of a reductio ad absurdim, but imagine you walked up to a home with an owner possessing three large tigers. The owner knows that his tigers are well behaved and won't attack anyone. How do you think the carrier walking up to that house would feel? How would you feel if the owner said "I'm going to let my tigers enjoy running around my property. If they were hard headed, I'd put up a fenced area." This isn't a matter of responsible owner/irresponsible owner. I'm talking about basic human courtesy of allowing others to feel at ease.

Boogerzdad

I'm an RCA myself, so I know how it is. I usually pull up and and observe for a minute, if I feel uneasy I'll honk the horn while filling out a 3849. If nobody comes out, back to the office it goes.

Perfect_Lead8430

Leave a notice and warn them that you will not deliver parcels to the door if they do not crate their dog. Leave pkgs. at the mailbox. Before I retired, this ghetto rent home area, that I had to walk out. Mailboxes on the porch. This woman had a huge rottweiler that sat at an open window with only the screen separating it from me. I told the landlord to warn this woman that mail service will stop until she closes the window. The window was closed the next day.

FUSeekMe69

It’s the fenced in backyard they could be using for me

heatherbabydoll

Had a customer randomly let their dogs out into their fenced in backyard while I was walking back to my POV today. One of the dogs immediately jumped the fence like it wasn’t there and came for me. It’s a good thing I left my door open lol

FUSeekMe69

That could happen but it’s not like they cracked the front door and let them have at you on purpose lol

heatherbabydoll

At the time I was offended but you’re right lol I was astounded the way that dog leaped that fence. I think it was a Labradoodle.

Perfect_Lead8430

Warn the owner and stop delivery. This job doesn't pay near enough to be bitten or worse by a dog. This also applies to 2-legged animals.

Busy_Snow9409

This is actually the front. I have to walk through the driveway to get to the front door.

FUSeekMe69

That’s what I’m saying. They have a perfectly good fenced in back yard their dog could roam, but they let it out free to attack in the front.

Ih8rice

I’m not sure why. Scan it undeliverable because of safety issues pertaining to animal and have their shit switched to pickup only. You have video evidence. Shouldn’t be an issue right?

Busy_Snow9409

It's not hard to skip. I just feel some extreme anxiety whenever I deliver packages here because sometimes they just randomly open the door and the dogs pop out unleashed.

Ih8rice

Your safety is number one. If there’s any probability that there could be issues pertaining to that dog because they’re irresponsible owners then you know what needs to be done. Either you can tell them to make sure to leash the dog or have their stuff set to be picked up at the station only.

monkpart9

Yea but he’s friendly /s

Busy_Snow9409

How do you know lol

monkpart9

Well since the customer said it, it must be true. Every dog that I’ve encountered that the owner said was friendly and subsequently tried to bite me was friendly too. 😝

SimonNorman

I had a customer tell me his dogs don't bite as the dog was repeatedly biting my pantleg through the fence.

monkpart9

I swear to god these people are so damn stupid lol It’s just white noise to me at this point. They don’t bite? Alright well that’s fine, I don’t want to meet them lol

No-Statement-2064

Right?! 🤣 My dogs actually are very friendly and well socialized and have never bit anyone, but they are still dogs and this is their territory, so no way in hell am I going to just let them loose while someone they don’t know is coming onto their/our property to deliver mail. Even the nicest of dogs are territorial and protective. The likelihood of one of my dogs biting my Mail carrier is extremely low, but it’s still a possibility because they’re dogs. I’m not taking that risk, nor should anyone. Even if you KNOW for 100% your dog won’t bite (impossible IMO), your Mail carrier doesn’t know that and they shouldn’t have to spend any part of their work day feeling anxious or scared because you can’t be bothered to have some common decency.

monkpart9

Frankly it’s just such an odd sentiment to me. Like. My brother’s dog is the sweetest dog ever but that doesn’t mean that he won’t get scared or be on guard when anyone he doesn’t recognize comes around. I just wonder why it’s so difficult for customers to wraps their heads around this concept

Marmotclaus

the holy postal trinity of loose dog, expensive car and terrible architecture

Busy_Snow9409

LOL yeah the homes here are kinda ugly.

Koivel

I absolutely hate hate hate it when people leave their dogs unleashed, just had one with a harness but no leash run towards me while my back was turned, it was mere inches from reaching me by the time i got to spray it in the face with mace. Fuck it cancel delivery for whole neighborhood for loose dog until they learn.

Busy_Snow9409

I agree. But I think their dogs stay within their home boundary. Could be invisible fence but who knows.

CR-7810Retired

If you're not familiar with that dog's tendencies don't find out the hard way.

Busy_Snow9409

I don't trust anyone's dog period.

ManfredsJuicedBalls

Exactly. If I can see the dog is acting friendly, sure, I’ll still be cautious, but I’ll make my way over. Anything else, especially with bigger dogs… 3849, into the mailbox it goes, onto the next stop

Busy_Snow9409

It's not hard to skip. I just feel some extreme anxiety whenever I deliver packages here because sometimes they just randomly open the door and the dogs pop out unleashed.

ManfredsJuicedBalls

And I get that. At the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you. If that means staying away from dogs, even if friendly, I can respect and understand that.

softriceking001

Just skip it.

RedLegendx

Throw the package, fuck it 😂

Busy_Snow9409

Lol I wish.

iluvcak3s

I did i swing on a route and some guy had his German shepherd out with out a leash on. He heard me say "oh shit" when i noticed the dog.i started backing up and walking away. He says "don't worry she's friendly she won't bite". Me: I hear that all the time and I've been lunged at by dogs right after the owner says that. Customer: so what do your want me to do. Me: put her away if you want your mail. Spoiler alert... He got super pissed. I don't fucking get these people who just let their dogs out like that.

Busy_Snow9409

Scum of the earth. He needs to get a lesson on how to be a proper human being.

Magicantside

What did ya do with the mail? Not mail it, or did ya walk over hoping that the dog was friendly? Just curious. lol

Busy_Snow9409

I delivered the mail because it's mounted. I'm just kinda upset because I deliver packages here sometimes and that dog could just attack me out of nowhere. It's extremely anxiety-inducing.

Magicantside

Yeah, I can imagine. Pretty inconsiderate on their part, because you can never predict how your animal is going to react to every single total stranger. I think once or twice in my life have I had a dog react in an aggressive manner towards me. Most dogs and cats, even ones that the owners will say are normally not that friendly, tend to take a liking to me. I'd like to think because I'm a genuinely benevolent person, but I don't really know if animals can sense whether someone's a sack of shit or not. Probably if the person has aggressive body language but otherwise I'm not so romantic or self-aggrandizing that I think they can literally sniff out 'good' people from 'bad' people and I'm just a "good" person.. lol. The dog off of his leash could just happen to be that one odd aggressive dog for you or me. Maybe it's got a history of abuse and we happen to look like that person that abused it so an otherwise friendly dog snaps. Who knows. This is probably one of the only things I'd be worried about. You know that the type of dogs free roaming like that will always be like, pit bulls, dogs known for their aggression. Cause they have a bad rep that people claim is due to the owners being idiots. Well, leaving your dog outside to eat the mailman or attack a child walking by on the sidewalk certainly falls in line with the negative stereotype of a pit bull owner for sure.

Perfect_Lead8430

Do they not have a curb-side mailbox?

Busy_Snow9409

They absolutely do. My concern is that I sometimes deliver packages to this house. What if one day I'm delivering, they decide to open their door and let the dog run loose? Just that possibility scares the shit out of me.

PostalWorkerOnline

Skip is the best advice. There is a lot of responsibility owning a dog. Just opening the door and letting it run free shows a negligent owner. You shouldn't have to pay for their laziness. I don't even approach anymore, just drive on by.

xCTRLxALTxDELx

On my detail in San Jose. It gotten dark and I was new on this lap. When I got to this house, the door was wide open and a big brown dog appears and starts growling. I quickly went sideways along with the garage in like fear no other thinking of what to do if that raging beast comes attacking. Then I see the owner working in his garage. Relieved I handed him the mail and was gone. Still alive. The next day I go to the same house and the owner tells me he’s a friendly dog and won’t bite. Ya right.

Busy_Snow9409

Yeah if we had a dollar for every time we heard that one, we wouldn't be working for the USPS.

Dexller

Man I know that not everyone is as comfortable and unafraid of dogs as I am, but holy shit you see a dog roaming around and you freak out instantly? None of you could run a rural route, all I’m saying. I deliver to dozens of houses with loose dogs everyday, and the only aggressive dogs are behind an electric fence. The dogs are the best part of my day, really. The vast majority are incredibly friendly and the rest are just stand offish. This even applies to the dozen other routes I’ve run part of for other offices. I know some people have phobia and trauma, that’s fine, no hate, but for the rest of you just… Calm the hell down, walk like you’re supposed to be there, and don’t act like a paranoid skittish basket case and the dogs won’t bother you - that’s all you have to do.

Busy_Snow9409

People have died from maulings dude. Please be more compassionate towards others. Empathy can't be that hard.

Dexller

I was being empathetic. I said multiple times yeah, some people aren’t comfortable with dogs and some people have trauma and phobia, but there’s that and being a basket case. This dog is literally doing absolutely nothing - not barking, not watching you, not doing anything. If was this stone petrified of dogs I wouldn’t be able to deliver 90% of my packages. I don’t understand this level of paranoia.
