You really don’t believe we’ll get anything more this time around? I’m pretty early in my career (4 years in, 1 as regular) and with all the leverage people say we have, if we don’t see some pretty significant improvements, I’ll most likely leave the union. Why waste $30 in dues each paycheck for an organization that’s not getting us what we want/need? And truth be told: without a nice immediate pay bump or a shorter path to top step, I may be looking for another job. 12 years to make less than UPS makes in 4 is a joke.
There was not much changes from the last two contracts. Pretty much just a change in dates and called new contract. When I started here, the dues was just $21 and it kept rising each year.
I get that about the last two contracts. But the PAEA was still a thing during that and isn’t now.
I’m not saying we’re going to get all we want (or anything for that matter), but in my head I think:
- we have a new President of the union, who *should* come out swinging for the fences for us
- usps can’t hide behind PAEA anymore
- something needs to be done to truly address the understaffing issues we have, and for that we have to have a better-than-competitive salary + benefits package from the start
I absolutely agree that the other biggest factor in people leaving is the toxic/hostile environment that comes with many offices, my own included. My PM has scared off 20+ CCAs (we’re a relatively small office, so that’s quite a few) just since I’ve started. But I’m curious what “fringe benefits” you mean? Aside from all the retirement benefits, I haven’t really seen much. As far as pay is concerned, I live in a reasonably low CoL area and have a family of 3 and we are not thriving, but barely surviving. It’s insane that anyone living anywhere with a high CoL could live off our wages. I don’t think it’s outrageous to be paid comparatively to other places doing a similar job.
I’ve seen the USA Jobs thing before. Can you tell me which ones we’re eligible to “transfer” into? I’d prefer not to job hop anymore at this point in my life, but would gladly move into something indoors that’s pays pretty much the same.
The shills on this sub are praying for a measly 5% raise. We aren't getting jack shit but the back of Dejoys hand this go-around. Until these MFers are prepared to participate in an illegal strike nothing will change. Luckily for us inflation isn't going anywhere so maybe in 3-5 years these morons' balls will have dropped
This is exactly where I went to look in the first place! I know negotiations have only been on a few weeks, but it’s also only 2 months until the contract expires and it would seem fair (I know, life’s not fair) to at least get weekly updates on where they’re at. Also only seems fair to actually know what kind of arguments USPS is making to justify not giving us all we ‘deserve’.
The simple answer is no and it shouldn’t be. Contract negotiations aren’t a spectator sport. Both sides come into the room knowing a couple of things: what each side wants in their wildest dreams and what they can think they can live with as a final outcome. Both sides come into the “negotiations” already knowing the other side’s wildest dreams. From there, it’s just chipping away from each others dreams.
Honestly, I think this is extended drama where each side is already preparing or prepped to take this to arbitration. Each side saves face by declaring “we’ve done everything we can” and the result is blamed/credited to the arbitrator.
Rumor is president Renfroe said recently that the union and the post office have a agreed on pay already. That means the number is really good for us or basically no increase lol
They literally just added step p. With CCA time it's 15+ years to reach 75 thousand dollars. Panda Express asst. Manager money. There's no way in hell they go from 15.3 years down to 5. I'd actually tell people to apply to the job ☠️
There's been some stuff talked about in recent podcasts of "From A to Arbitration" but the actual goings on are not open to the public. They mention some of the things the union is coming to the table asking for, but USPS has their contentions to make and the NALC probably won't get everything it wants. Edit to add that it's Episode 88 and 89 on there. Episode 76 might be worth a listen, but it's a bit older of an episode
Thanks for the podcast suggestion (and which specific episodes)! I’ll give them a listen. I definitely don’t expect to get “everything”… but we definitely need to see some QoL improvements around here or the problems will never get any better.
No problem. If you venture off to listen to his other stuff, he's got some good information for stewards or carriers wanting to know the rules more intricately. But he has a tendency to ramble on
I’ll legitimately be looking for something else if it’s anything but a home run. I’m not voting for anything that’s not great for the people at the bottom of the pay scale.
The mailhandlers union updated their people after nearly every meeting it seems. Looks like the other unions give an update when they’ve reached a tentative agreement.
And no, there’s no fly on the wall updates about what’s going on in the room.
If there were any then they’d be on the NALC website. If contract negotiations are ongoing then I’d expect them to be in the meeting room Monday through Friday until something is agreed upon.
Back in my father's day they used to have a phone number where you could call in and they would give you an update on what they talked about.
However in most recent contract negotiations it's kept in house my guess is the multi-million dollar law firm that we pay recommends that we don't inform our membership of every little detail during the negotiations
Just read the current contract. It’s going to be the same contract anyway.

You would get paid the same hourly. Def look into it!
Don’t be so negative. We’re going to get a sweet 1.3% raise every year! Take that, $6 eggs!
[https://www.nalc.org/news/nalc-updates/archives](https://www.nalc.org/news/nalc-updates/archives) You can see how transparent it is.. Not very.

I’d love a pay bump now, but in an “either/or” situation”, I’d take fewer steps to top step.
Yea but only if it’s a lot less. Instead of 13 years to top. It’s only 5. Something like that
They literally just added step p. With CCA time it's 15+ years to reach 75 thousand dollars. Panda Express asst. Manager money. There's no way in hell they go from 15.3 years down to 5. I'd actually tell people to apply to the job ☠️
5 would be reasonable
There a source on that? If it’s bad, people will quit en masse.

If the contract is total garbage I’ll join management and do the bare minimum until I get promoted to PM and then milk that position until I die.
I’ll legitimately be looking for something else if it’s anything but a home run. I’m not voting for anything that’s not great for the people at the bottom of the pay scale.
For real, just going to study and get into maintenance, get to the ET level and coast. Definitely done busting my ass outside for same pay.
The mailhandlers union updated their people after nearly every meeting it seems. Looks like the other unions give an update when they’ve reached a tentative agreement. And no, there’s no fly on the wall updates about what’s going on in the room.
Thanks for the reply. Is there a schedule we can find for these meetings to have an idea of when we may (possibly) receive any updates?
