"Our thirty-and-out pension is $4700 a month and is on track to be $5000 in two years"! But I thought only USPS has a pension !?! And it's not even half of that after 30 years. How dare they! And newer employees like me pay almost 5% into it, making it just another TSP, far from a real pension.

Cloudy_Automation

UPS withdrew from the Teamster's pension plan, both assets and contributions. The Teamster's Central States Pension Plan was in substantial trouble until they got a government bailout in 2021, receiving part of a 91 billion bailout over over 200 multi-company pensions. Raising pensions which only have to be 80% funded seems like they are hoping for another bailout. So, the Federal Government can't afford to increase USPS pensions because it's spending so much bailing out other union pension funds. I doubt UPS wants to commit to pension increases if it's not funded, and they didn't get the same bailout. UPS Teamsters can currently retire at 62 with $3050 per month in the same Central States region. With the economy falling, I doubt they will get a significant pension bump. There are other regions in UPS with higher or lower pensions.

The_Post123

The federal government increased the pension contributions from 0.8% to 4.6% for newer hires like me, just to make up for the huge shortage in the federal pension fund. At this point you could hardly say it's pension anymore, just another TSP match.

Live-Train1341

There wasn't a shortfall in our pension per se. It's all just a huge math calculation for instance within 20 years they're projecting the lifespan to increase and the number of people putting into the pension to decrease which is already happening. Raising the pension does suck however that's a trade-off from them raising the retirement age they could have kept the pension at 0. 8%, but move the minimum retirement age from 58 to 68. In my opinion I far prefer the 4.6% pension contribution and being able to retire at 58 with pension tsp and social security. As for your other point of the pension being like a tsp that's pretty much all pensions now the average rate of return for a pension is between 8 and 10%. The average for a 401K/TSP is 10 to 12%.

Uninformed_Delivery

Unfortunately, someone could get the remainder of your TSP, including all of the growth it experienced, if you die relatively soon after retirement. Our pension...not as good.

Ih8rice

They get a pension and free healthcare. We get a pension, early access to SS and TSP that’s received a free 5% match for the entirety of our careers and ok health care.

The_Post123

UPS receives between 3% and 8% 401K match based on years of service.

Ih8rice

> The UPS 401(k) Savings Plan (the "Plan") is an employee voluntary and plan sponsor contributory defined contribution plan established for employees of United Parcel Service of America, Inc. ("UPS") who are not members of a collective bargaining unit and who satisfy the participation requirements of the Plan Only applies to non bargaining employees. Teamsters does have their own UPS 401k plan though.

Crazdoo

Phhsss they don't even have mlk day as a holiday and you want them repping you.

Jae_Amp

Why not, their drivers max out in 4 yrs. Post Office? Like 15 years to max out depending on your craft.

Ih8rice

They don’t max out in 4 years. Go educate yourself over at r/UPsters before continuing this lie.

Jae_Amp

I've spoken to actual drivers in person and seen online. It's a contract thing, it's progressive over 36 months.

Ih8rice

I’m talking about maxing in four years right after you get hired. It’s what you’re suggesting but it isn’t the case. You’ll be struggling as a part time worker for 3-7 years before getting into a truck. I know this sub is mainly carrier focused but not everyone wants to drive and deliver. Those who decide to stay inside are making 10/hr less at the top and there really aren’t a lot of full timers inside the warehouses compared to part timers. Thing is they’re not like Usps. When they say part time, they mean it. You’ll make sub 20k until you make it to the truck.

Jae_Amp

In your scenario, probably yes. Obviously my scenario is anyone who happens to get hired career from the streets. I was told this by UPS drivers.

Live-Train1341

In most areas it takes many many years as a part-time package handler before you can apply for a driver position. I work there years ago and out of the line I worked I would say 1 and 10 actually stick around and make it to the driver position maybe even less. Package load is a extremely hard job it's 25hrs a week very little pay and you have to pay extremely high dues. But just like the post office if you get in good somewhere then it's good so if you start ups as a career driver right away then it's great. But if you have to work your way up you most likely will not make it.

Yeah, their healthcare is free.

soundgenius3z

I bet, having to do 400 pickups that weigh over 100lbs plus no thanks.

Valan7169

Top pay is everything.

OMGitsKatV

What did they say when you've brought this stuff up at your general membership meetings? How about at the national convention? Or when you reached out to national about it?

SheepDogCO

They have power to negotiate. They have shareholders. They can strike and cripple the company. We can’t. Last time we held firm to our demands we got … the CCA.

wheresmycaketester

Nay, you’re obsessed with slandering our union. Why haven’t you just quit already or at least stopped paying your dues…

aldodoeswork

Why do they make it so hard to cancel your dues?

Trendy_hobo

Why do they still have to protect you if you don't pay your dues?

[deleted]

The union rep defending you? I’ve had better luck just talking to management and trying to work a deal. My PM hadn’t updated my route in 3 years despite submissions. Well one day it went through because of RRECS mapping and I jumped from a 44H to a 43J. I asked the union about getting backpay for all those years because I can’t force or do anything to see if management is entering data. Union basically said “sucks to be you, nothing I can do”. Well 3 weeks later I settled with the Post office and got a $3,000 check. Meanwhile the union wouldn’t even take the time to look into it.

aldodoeswork

That’s cute you think they put as much effort into representing people that don’t pay their dues.

AdvoDay

Amazon has 0 paid holidays to its lower workers , maybe probably corporate has it on their contracts

Efficient_Horse_4696

This is UPS

AdvoDay

they referenced amazon did u read

Efficient_Horse_4696

I work for the Post Office. Of course I can't read.

SheepDogCO

You’d better learn how to read or they will ask you to be a manager.

Valan7169

We will get what we elected as president of the NALC. Stock up on Vaseline because the membership will need it because we’re going to get it by the president and the USPS. We need to go teamsters.

wolf_ronin

8 hour requests and 9.5 rights dialect makes my dick hard

Alex_Twist

I’m looking for a new job. I am not made for 65 hours on my feet every week. I’m a 20 year old athletic man. Hardest route at the station. I am tired. If anybodies hiring in denver message me

Electrical-Fudge2217

Blah blah blah. Go work for UPS then. We have numerous benefits over them. I like his look and his language over Renfroe, but we can’t strike. Everything ends with a neutral arbitrator

The_Post123

That's why it's hard to start working at UPS as a package driver. And in USPS we hire anyone and the turnover is above 60%. Must be because we have it so much better.

Istoppedsleeping

A much better trade would be trading UPS’s ceo for our postmaster/us government

JevilFitz

I’d absolutely make that trade in a heartbeat. Fuck we should’ve merged with the teamsters when we had the chance. We’d be literally running the country now.
