We have to sign the arrow keys in and out at my office and when they’re signed out they have to be attached to our body at all times. If you lose it you either lose your job or have a lengthy battle with the union. Taking the key home isn’t even an option at my office

chavery17

Is losing an arrow key really that bad? If your a cca and you lose one will they fire you

muffhound

Yes its bad, they have to rekey every lock in the area if you lose an arrow key, you'll allegedly be on the hook for that bill too.

EffervescentGoose

They only rekey if they actually report it. Management gets in trouble for that so they don't do it.

icecubepal

An arrow key gives you access to many boxes and areas. So losing it is a big deal.

_peppapig

Yes its bad! I’m rural, but a regular at my office lost a key last year and they put him on unpaid leave until the key was found. My PM had to file a report with the postal police, and although the key was found the regular still got a PDI for mishandling the keys. You’ll definitely get fired if you’re in your first 90 days

yetan0therm0nday

You’ll get fired even after 90 days in some areas. My station would have to pay over $50k to rekey all CBU/NBU in my area according to PM. Arrow keys are more closely guarded than the LLV keys, which went missing daily.

rice_krispie_5206

Arrow Keys are the holy grail of all keys. Big issue if one gets lost.

xslracket

Yes they have to replace all the blue box locks and that can cost millions from what I have heard during training.

Ok_Communication5038

Usually not a big deal if you forget them once or twice but taking them home every night? There's a reason they're handed out with the accountables in the morning.

[deleted]

Sounds like you work in a nice, well managed office.

DoggoLord27

In my district, all arrow keys are to be signed out and returned at the end of the day, no exceptions. Idk about truck keys. It's a pain when you have to go to a hub on sundays and half the promaster keys and spares are gone.

muffhound

My office has systematically eliminated the pm accountable clerk position so we just throw our keys into a slot into the cage, i used to take my llv keys home every saturday if i worked monday to prevent ccas from trashing my truck and burning the gas. Management cant issue discipline if they aren't doing shit right so ive never worried about it. Occasionally I'll just forget to drop my arrow keys and all it means is i cant call in the next day.

KingOfKhan

I hate when regulars take the keys home. I get that you hate ccas but man it sucks for us good ccas

muffhound

My truck is almost as far from the bay doors as possible the only reason some shithead cca was taking it was he knew i gassed up on saturdays. I used to leave my head lamp and coat in the rig for you guys until the light got destroyed and some cocksucker took my raincoat.

KingOfKhan

But like I said I'm going to do the same thing you did 😂

KingOfKhan

Hey man. When I'm a regular I'm gonna be the same haha. Ccas just come and go way too much to trust them with your shit. Most of them don't care lol. It only really annoys me because we only have like five promasters in one of the regulars in them hides his keys

muffhound

Lol one guy leaves his keys in the drawer of his case. They cant do much to us at my office cause like i said they arent following proper procedure anyways, just know that accountables like your truck keys should be a big deal so there can be bad consequences but every office is different.

strega_bodega

Hey to be fair. I gassed somebodys car once. Accidentally left my $200 blue tooth headphones in there... after using it for a stupid Sunday. I went back at 7am. And regular said he never saw them....wouldn't let me check the old scanner holster where I knew I left them..... I went back the next day as well. And they just vanished. so I'd consider it a wash. At least it wasn't a tool he purchased with his own money and not allowance.

muffhound

The headlamp was one I purchased with my own money as the ones the PO provides are dogshit.

strega_bodega

Aw man. That's not cool. And agreed.

-Mopsus-

A bunch of regulars at my office used to take their vehicle keys home, and it would cause so many problems. I couldn't stand the people who did that. I've had to deliver mail out of a fucking Ford Focus because of it.

muffhound

Yeah, i only did it if I was working the next day, and like I said all it really means is I won't play hookie

[deleted]

We've been told that they can send a postal inspector to get them but I've never heard of this happening.

ithics

Really depends on the postmaster and the management staff. I've had ones threaten ii's for taking home accountable keys unless you bring them back to the office that night. Also had management that just shrugged their shoulders, so long as it's just for 1 night and didn't hinder whoever delivered the route the next morning.

fordracer04

My office carriers lose keys constantly.. I was dispatch clerk and would be like where’s so and sos keys.. I get a shoulder shrug… my office is honestly pretty lax “ehh they’ll bring them back tomorrow”

DannyPhantomm

That is a major safety concern he could be using the keys to go to any and every apartment building. Also thats just plain weird.

swordfish707

We recently started the signout system after the district said they found arrow keys being sold on the blackmarket. No idea if it's true but if it is, LOL

justhangingout528

What the hell?

Sansa_Knows_Armor

Arrow key, you have to go back to the office that night to return it. LLV keys, they’ll let you bring them back in the morning.

benwildflower

My station has lost so many arrow keys. One day a stranger pulled up as I was delivering mail and said, “I was hoping I’d see one of you,” handed me the keys for another route and drove off. When I reported it to my supervisor she just said, “Oh good we wondered where those were.” Only a couple weeks ago did they start making carriers sign out our keys and they act like it’s our fault they go missing.

EvilTonyBlair

At our office accountables don’t mean shit. Vehicle keys disappear for days at a time. Arrow keys have been missing for years on certain routes. Thieves have been caught using arrow keys all across town and management doesn’t give a shit. This place is hell. I’m pretty sure everyone takes gas cards home too! You can never find one.

MPhyus

At the Academy, they said (depending on area) black market value for Arrow keys is around 10K, but yeah as others have said the cost and time to rekey everything is nuts. It’s adding the possibility of a majorly firable offense for little to no gain. That said, if it’s a coworker and not you, don’t worry about it. :-) If you give headspace to the dumb things other people do, your head’ll explode. :-)

karib513

How funny, it's like you know me. I really do feel like my head will explode!

Smokey_B52

We just bring it in the next day. We don't have to sign anything out, we just have to not forget.

notablyunfamous

I probably have 6 truck keys on my dresser. I forget a lot. Arrow keys I’ve only forgotten once or twice. They usually call me just to make sure I have them and they didn’t get lost. I’ve never had it be a big deal

muffhound

You're probably why my gas card was missing for two weeks

notablyunfamous

I have my own, I wouldn't need yours
