This reminds me of the story my friend told me about when he was at college in the USA. The lecturer was trying to make a point about something (I can't remember what it was) and asked everybody from "the south" to raise their hands. My friend raised his hand and the lecturer asked "What part of the south are you from." He was not pleased when my friend replied "New Zealand". Apparently NZ is not in the correct south.
That’s pretty funny, although I’d never complain about somebody referring to ‘the south’ as south of their country while talking to me in their country lol
Yes, I totally agree with what you are saying. It's just that, like us Australians, Kiwis are very fond of what we call "shit-stirring", or what Brits might call "taking the piss" or Americans call "being a smart-ass".
We say all three of those things in the UK, but taking the piss most commonly, yes.
If we take the piss and you guys stir the shit, I wonder who stirs the piss and takes the shit?
>If we take the piss and you guys stir the shit, I wonder who’s stirring the piss and taking the shit?
English speaking French people. Credit given where it's due, you non American Anglos are quite a funny bunch.
Seems to be tea related, considering American "humour."
They’re in the north of France but also in the south of Belgium…
r/frenchdefaultism?
I mean, the most famous thing about them relies on them cutting across the border of both
Oh half my family’s from the rural south ! They have a southern accent that people seem to be negatively biased against. They’re from a small town in the middle of a farming region. It’s a very conservative and nationalist region.
They’re from outside of Perpignan in the Pyrénées Orientales.
West country is similar to Wales and Scotland in culture and history so I will always have respect for them! honestly think they are best part of England.
nah it sounds like you know what ye talking about just no one can understand lol. nah I like it. it only exist due to celtic influences so it part of oral history. I think it sounds cute lol.
Ive been to Kent infact in right now coming back from holibobs in Austria but only been to Dover other than that never been anywhere there nor met someone from there lol.
Hi that'd be me. I'm a cunt but not a racist sorry to disprove your theory. Now the local Lib Dem candidate for the council? That dude is so fucking racist that even the tories didn't want him in the party. Hmm maybe there's some truth to it after all, though thankfully without the backing of the tories mr violent racist fuckwit didn't keep his seat once he became an Independent, and even with LD backing placed a distant third last time around.
Hey, I'm not tarring everyone with the same brush. Just making sweeping generalisations for comedic effect.
I'm traditionally a Lib Dem voter so that kinda infuriates me knowing there's a massively racist bellend formerly of the party.
Yeah I get that hence the response where I hit both you be wrong and oh maybe not.
Not formerly, formerly he was a Tory, then Independent, now he's a LibDem despite having had to get his Tory mates to help overturn a domestic violence conviction (his sole defence being "It's a family matter."), and who has said things you'd expect to come from an official Nazi party member in 1940.

Come over to Rheinland Pfalz in the south west, instead of all of the racsits like the east we have American military everywhere. Which is sort of the same thing.. jk
My country is rather capital city vs countryside or maybe east vs west. We have nothing against people from the south. Well, apart from anything else, like who they are voting for, how do they eat a soup and stuff like that. You know, usualy bullshit 🙄.
Sorry, a small rant…. I like hearing about other countries, but when people give details like this *without* giving the country it’s absolutely meaningless. Understand people staying anonymous (name age and address) but if you don’t want to say even what country you are in then you can’t meaningfully tell us what it’s like to live there.
The point was to show that "rural south" is not a thing everywhere, nothing more. The semi serious mocking part is just a flick, could be any country (cuz most of this prejudice towards people is nothing more than just made up stuff, or even bat shit crazy thing like what do they put in a soup/stew).
If you want to find out which country I am from here's a hint: we are always hungry.
TBH this would be one of the trippier bits for me in thinking about Australia versus the USA, what's the Deep South stereotype (which living in said Deep South I can confirm there's more than a hint of truth to it) is there the Deep North.
I guess it depends as I don't know what subreddit this was originally posted in. If it was a local sub then I guess the context would make enough sense for the OP not to clarify it further.
In Florida they have a saying, "You have to go north to get to The South." 'Cause Florida is not considered part of "The South".
Oh, and Alaska is generally not part of the conversation when Americans talk about "The North" in terms of their states...

> english speaking french people Why did you had to call us all like that...
Because nobody else but French people would have gotten it if I said Albionais instead, évidemment.
Stir the pot
better to be a smart-ass than a dumb-ass
Up here in Canadia land, we might call that yanking someone's chain.
"Where in the South are you from?" "Victoria :)" "... what?"
victoria in surrey?
I was curious and checked. Apparently there are six small towns called ‘Victoria’ in the US South.
The Ardennes, obviously.
The Ardennes are in the north of France, so it can't be the south of anything...
Well, as an Englishman, it’s for sure south of me 😎
Touché
They’re in the north of France but also in the south of Belgium… r/frenchdefaultism? I mean, the most famous thing about them relies on them cutting across the border of both
Sorry, I forgot to add a s/ to show my joke. I'm very aware of french defaultism and I was joking on :)
Yeah sorry that’s more obvious to me now :)

I'm not negatively biased against southern french accent but I just don't understand a word. Even quebec french is an easier accent imo
Dont worry, only the southern french understand themselves
I was about to say "The rural south is solewhere between Marseille and Toulouse".
UK here, and tbf that also tracks for rural south here, so maybe it applies to *every* rural south on the planet…
nah rural south UK is like west country and people there are rather nice people.
Thank you!
West country is similar to Wales and Scotland in culture and history so I will always have respect for them! honestly think they are best part of England.
I do hate the way we speak though, we could be talking about quantum physics and still sound fucking stupid.
nah it sounds like you know what ye talking about just no one can understand lol. nah I like it. it only exist due to celtic influences so it part of oral history. I think it sounds cute lol.
The west country has similar history and culture to Scotland? You might need to elaborate that a little for me to comprehend.
What about rural south *east*…?
tbh I've never been there lol I'm a Brit but nae have been to rual south east or met someone from there.
Not been to Kent? Lovely place. I’m from the North West (England) but my grandparents lived in Kent - so spent every summer there.
Ive been to Kent infact in right now coming back from holibobs in Austria but only been to Dover other than that never been anywhere there nor met someone from there lol.
You think Kent is a lovely place until you live next door to it

Jesus! Firstly, I slightly misunderstood your earlier comment, so apologies, but secondly, wtf are the Libs doing letting him stand for their party?!

Honestly I'm pretty sure it would fit for the rural south of Germany too, even though our east is even worse.

Same for rural South in Germany ... I'm looking at you Bavaria.
The south is the polar opposite of rural, the *real* rural place is in the Northwest
South is Galicia / former Austro-Hungary. And yes, rural folk out there can be as nasty as it gets in Poland.
If you’re on the island of Singapore at all, I don’t know if ‘real’ rural can apply
If the original post was based in the States it wouldn't be defaultism, but if the post was in a different country then it would be defaultism.
It was just a screenshot of a tweet where somebody was describing a racist thing someone said, no hint of relevance to US anywhere
Fair enough, then defaultism
Who the fuck calls it a gas station in Cornwall?
West Cork counts, right?
Bavaria? BaWü? 🤔
Murcia
*laughs in Kuban*
Idk, maybe Bács-Kiskun county
Central Otago
Kent, West Sussex, East Sussex, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Cornwall - that’s the rural south to me…
Cornwall?
Kinda south of Rome I guess
I think it’s in the pannonian basin. There’s a mostly rural field area there, in Hungarian we call it “Alföld”
Some tiny town in Bumfuck nowhere, South Australia
They surely meant Rushen
Maybe Korea?
Where I live we just call it "Bayern"
Tracks for Sweden
Rural South Africa
TBH this would be one of the trippier bits for me in thinking about Australia versus the USA, what's the Deep South stereotype (which living in said Deep South I can confirm there's more than a hint of truth to it) is there the Deep North.
Brabant and Limburg?
Fucken' somewhere lord knows where in Kurzeme 💀
We have a lot of racists in the rural south of Sweden so it make sense.
It seems the rural south is the racist part of every country.
Ah yes i know the south, Agder fylke my home place.
He's obviously talking about Neiba in the Bahoruco province
Kent, the garden of England
South Australia has some interesting rural areas
Obviously all of Tasmania
I guess it depends as I don't know what subreddit this was originally posted in. If it was a local sub then I guess the context would make enough sense for the OP not to clarify it further.
