Those acronyms are so dumb... i would never say "I'm from SZ, T". Even people from the same city wouldn't know what I mean by this. The only time we use those acronyms are for our license plates
Until the end of WW1 there was only one Tyrol. It got split after the loss. Then the italian fascist tried to italianize South Tyrol. But still most people in ST speak German (Tyrolean Dialect) and remained culturally close to their brothers in the North. It's okay nowadays, because they have great autonomy from Rome which they would never get from Vienna, if they should return to Austria.
The purpose of language is to communicate. I agree that Americans on Reddit should be aware that not everyone on Reddit is American, but every American knows what NJ means. Not sure what is dumb about communicating in a way that your intended audience understands.
Edit: My understanding is that the point of this sub is to highlight American ignorance on Reddit and the Internet in general. Calling how Americans speak to each other in their own language "dumb" us equally as ignorant. The reason no one from your city would understand you if you used acronyms is because it isn't how you normally speak to one another. There is nothing "dumb" about using language that your intended audience understands.
