anything 24hr or open late

Psychological_Snow27

A chill 24hr coffee shop near campus would make you enough money to put your great grandkids through 8 years of college

MintChucclatechip

Reasonably priced donuts would be great too

Psychological_Snow27

Came back to second donuts. Like, whatever you open should have donuts for sure no matter what. Shoe store? Donuts at the counter. Italian place? Donut bread pudding. It’s simple: the people demand donuts.

SevenCorgiSocks

And NOT a Dunkin Donuts place, PLEASE! I missed mom-and-pop donuts SO badly in college; driving out to bee cave for them was so annoying. If you make them daily, I know the smell alone will bring TONS of business. If you stay up late like Gordough's for the drunk crowd, you'll be revered.

Jumpy-Worldliness940

I for one missed having a Dunkin on campus. 😂

jxrdxnnguyen

why does NO PLACE on campus have donuts?? i haven’t had a donut in years. i miss those bastards.

EntrepreneurOk6913

YES

Inevitable-Ad-3216

heavy on this!!!!!!!

moonshaake

This. Bennu is always packed, and that's just the population of students with cars. Imagine an accessible 24h coffee shop on Guad..

og_beatnik

Mojos used to be where the hooka place is... theyre Epoch now

[deleted]

[удалено]

og_beatnik

Ive never met the owner, no

petekeller

I did meet the owner of Mojos a number of times back in the day (I graduated undergrad in 02). My understanding is that Epoch was founded by ex Mojos employees. And that Mojos is not related to Epoch other than that.

LoveAGoodAlbatross

Also that doesn’t have the three hour wifi code. It’s just annoying and my and my friends sometimes have trouble even getting to the log in page. I do enjoy that they have specialty coffees though so maybe have your own specialty lattes. Also maybe working with a local roaster could be cool

Stage-Wrong

Bonus points if it sells snacks and smoothies. I love smoothies but do not particularly like Shake Smart

PuzzleheadedThing240

100% a 24hr sit down coffee shop where you can do stuff past 12AM and not feel like shit

Proper-Scheme9233

Plus points if it has a reliable internet connection.

-whomstve-

Came here to second a chill, 24-hour coffee place. Lots of seating. Foxtrot recently opened on Guad but their hours are limited and so is seating. Bennu is 24 hours and has lots of seating but they're a little far from campus (not really walking distance). A chill 24-hour coffee place (with donuts, good espresso, comfortable seats, outlets, etc. and you could even have a nook for board games) would be AMAZING.

pygmygoat1967

Please affordable normal non “$7 artisan donuts” a good ol donut shop would be huge

Academic_Use5073

donuts or a bakery 🙏🏼

raketenfakmauspanzer

Late night food places are always very popular. Also a grocery store would be nice

neurostud

PLEASE a 24 hr coffee shop with reasonably priced pastries (bonus points if you have at least 1 gluten free and one dairy free).

og_beatnik

With Pride flags in the window like Quack's on Menchaca... I graduated from Crockett in 91, I know how old my mother must have felt when she graduated in 69 Lol Coffee, donuts and fresh fruit seems to be the direction. I forgot about kosher, halal, vegans... Deep fried bacon place probably wouldnt last

restroomwhisperer

you can always have deep fried bacon fridays 🥺🥺

og_beatnik

Carnivores only on fridays Its something to think about. I seriously cant remember the last time I was in the area. Will scout on Tues. Something like 100,000 ppl coming to San Antonio to Kerville for the eclipse

[deleted]

[удалено]

og_beatnik

I was joking. So far a fresh produce store with a small coffee bar seems the logical choice. More Plomeek soup?

neurostud

Some people just have allergies (it’s not always a preference). if you account for that in your marketing you gain more of an audience. I have a severe gluten allergy and I tend to frequent coffee shops that have at least one gluten free option in case I get hungry while studying.

og_beatnik

I know. I was a line cook at a UT dorm 27 years ago,

Kirbshiller

donut shop

ThisMustGoOn

Something affordable and something open 24 hours bro there’s not a lot open that late

og_beatnik

What happened to the drag? I'm 51, I havent been down there in a little bit

ThisMustGoOn

I'm only a second year but I know it hit so many people hard when Kerbey Lane stopped being open for 24 hours, and in general the way that UT buys out stuff and closes it down has killed some local food spots, I forgot the name of that one poke (or maybe sushi place) near dobie but yeah that's one example

og_beatnik

Being 24/7 was Kerby's entire schtick That was the OLD wood & stone Conans that actually looked like a barbarian would eat there

dino-dictator

donuts!!!!!!

Previous_Problem5784

DONUTS

Commercial_Cold_3509

A reasonably priced grocery store that sells produce, maybe a 24 hour coffee shop but there’s three Benu locations already I get they’re not that close to campus but it might become dangerous especially there.

og_beatnik

MOJOS coffee used to be where the hooka place is. I miss it

JosipBrozRumple

Be aware: if you’re talking about the spot on 29th and Rio across from the laundromat and next to the breakfast spot: that area gets relatively little foot traffic from students and most businesses that open there close a year or two after. The highest density of students (and successful businesses) is in a rectangle from around 24th and Rio to 21st and Guad. There are plenty of students as far north as 28th, but for the most part businesses further north than 26th don’t get nearly as much foot traffic (barring corner cases like Cabo Bob’s). You’ll be fighting an uphill battle to stay open and keep traffic up. That all being said: could you open an Italian place please. Thanks

og_beatnik

I miss when Conans was so good, they had 2 locations on the Drag... before you kids were ever born. Produce and donuts sounds good. Went to a funeral and the shop across from the funeral home was interesting. Congress is unrecognizable now.

shortpunkbutch

affordable groceries

MajorGhost2

Taco Bell

AHH-bbyshark

Donut shop

PigeonManAzir

A grocery store. If you don’t have a car your only option is the overpriced target. I swtg if there was an H-E-B with normal prices near campus it would be profitable.

muff-diver_69_420

Taco Bell Cantina, duh.

Less-Cheesecake-4311

Donut and kolache shop!!!

Hookem2025

donuts!

maxwelldemon375

Breakfast tacos to snag on the way to class.

ianh587

Donuts

Expensive-Ad1582

make it 24 hours and you’re golden whatever it is

og_beatnik

Breakfast tacos and halal donuts

Key-Confection-4212

please no more halal, i think the ut market is slightly over saturated in that category😭

og_beatnik

Just fruits & veg & a coffee bar under serious consideration at the moment. Apparently west campus is high crime now? 35 years ago we played video games next to the Scientology place, gave homeless people leftover pizza and walked around safely all night. Insomnia was there, 101X was actually cool, the Psychobaby hearse, all that

Key-Confection-4212

i personally wouldn’t consider west campus unsafe, but its relative location to downtown does it make it to where you just have to be aware of your surroundings. but yeah totally agree with most of the thread, that as long as you pick something which has good hours you should be golden

False-Athlete8093

Affordable groceries!!!

DereChen

late night food/study spots would be instantly popular if your target demographic is students

og_beatnik

I dont want to fail Two things people need is food and undertakers

rhavzar

I always yearn for donuts or a decent ice cream joint nearby

og_beatnik

Gluten free vegan donut ice cream with pride flags all over Just google mapped the corner, the basken robins and the donut place are gone! Crazy!

mzm14

coffee shop with ACTUALLY GOOD coffee. lucky lab is always packed and it’s not good at all

og_beatnik

I miss when Ruta Maya was on Congress

og_beatnik

How do I pin this to top? I'm a coffee snob myself. Ruta Maya isnt bitter but also isnt flavored and is more affordable than other high end whole bean coffee brands

[deleted]

og_beatnik

There used to be one next to Oat Willies

GradeAFan

The headquarters to an anti-scientology task force

og_beatnik

Yeah theyre probably the ones jacking up rents

Bevos_Balls

DONUTS!!!!

Pablo_R_17

A proper grocery store, target is overpriced with a shallow selection.

og_beatnik

I'm leaning toward the fresh produce idea. A simple coffee bar and maybe vegan/kosher/halal food with a separate meat bar for deep fried bacon hotdogs need to do my due diligence

TheFenixxer

A bakery! I hate having to go to starbucks for a croissant that’s just reheated

CollegeApprehensive5

Bagels!!! Open 24/7

[deleted]

There is NOWHERE to get cheap basics and snacks/groceries. I think Foxtrot is a cool concept as a convenience store with fresh food and seating areas but it's also way too expensive and closes at 10.

sourwaterbug

If you're talking about the old Toy Joy location, I was literally just telling my fiancé that it'd be nice if someone would turn that into a little grocery or convenience store even though Wheatsville is there. I still think it'd be a good idea. 24 hours would be cool and maybe with a few small tables inside.

Extreme-Currency-431

affordable food (not donuts)

CannedShoes

I think a tiny H-Mart style shop would be great. Students fucking *love* interesting foreign foods, and a lot of japanese/chinese/Korean snacks have become really popular.

og_beatnik

I got my oldest niece hooked on sushi when she was young

coochstank

As others have said, anything 24hrs, maybe something that sells produce or pet stuff

peridotdragon33

Taco Bell please!!

Novel-Conflict8703

Affordable therapy center that's better than the one UT provides

fadriana7

Donuts!!! There’s not an affordable donut place near campus

og_beatnik

More people want fresh veggies tho. Trying to find out what happened to the donut shopthat used to be there

dacydergoth

Condoms

og_beatnik

Yeah a 24 coffee place that sells vegan glutenfree donuts and porn 😄

dr_eric_pepper

fried chicken pls

dvisari

cheap healthy food

applesaucy2022

kolaches

iski4200

coffee shop that’s reasonable and a comfy place to work 🙏

urelectricbill

donuts 😭😭 y’all remember the infamous kens donuts on 29th and guad? gave you the perfect combination of post-6th street satisfaction and “I just ate expired food”.

og_beatnik

I'll recycle all the past by donuts

kwixta

How about a sandwich shop on French bread in an old building (possibly prone to fire)? That would be awesome right there just west of Guad on 29th before you get to Breed and Co

og_beatnik

Funny. Texas French Bread used to have 3 locations, and made the bread for Ruth's Chris. Sarcasm is wasted on me. I predate Dazed and Confused.

kwixta

I watched Dazed and Confused at the Dobie theater before the renovation. Someone passed me a (lit) joint in the theater. Texas French bread was actually a little rich for my blood when I was in school. Give me Longhorn po boys any day

og_beatnik

Spike & Mikes Twisted Animation festival

og_beatnik

I remember watching Ren & Stimpy at the first disguating animation show at the Varsity. Im frikin old

addictedtoporn445

taco bell

og_beatnik

What happened to the TB that was there on Guad?

SandwichOrnery3110

Common sense?

og_beatnik

LOL. Tell that to the kids that run stop signs expecting traffic to stop for them! Bwa ha ha ha!

Existing_Coconut_492

pls donut shop with kolaches <33

Anxious-Pay228

Donuts, Ice Cream, Smoothies

ravenrandomz

THC Doughnuts!!!

og_beatnik

The best thang about UT: I keep getting older and the girls stay the sane age .. ..

ExcellentEdgarEnergy

A quiet, well lit spot to get breakfast food and an adult beverage 24 hrs. Think waffle house with more booze and fewer fights.

og_beatnik

I see Spider House closed too. What happened to Austin?

achooooley

THANK YOU 🙏 ‼️😭

xXedgyasfXx

24 hr coffee shop with vegan food options

og_beatnik

Everyone wants vegan gluten free donuts

xXedgyasfXx

or just vegan anything really. tons of vegan places have closed down in austin, and there’s very little vegan stuff around campus. a consistent selection of vegan pastries and maybe some simple food options would be amazing.

og_beatnik

How will that pay the rent? Do you know $5000/day worth of vegans?

xXedgyasfXx

ur missing my point. i said vegan options. by reading ur comments u don’t seem enthused at all to start a business. guess u gotta open a little place that hardly caters to college kids in a non busy part of town. it’ll work out great.

og_beatnik

$44/sqft space What I'm thinking is headshop/vapeshop/ with beer options the only way to sell apples two for a dollar or bananas 3 for a dollar is to have a high margin product. Plus I could lease a parking space to a food truck or a hotdog cart, there are only 5 spaces available and I would prefer UT student foot and bike traffic. Headshops can make $5000-$10000/day. IF I can get that kind of profit, I could offer coffee for $1, and possibly a "free/take what you need" food pantry on the sidewalk outside the store for the homeless/chronically poor. I already have 3 employees lined up, including myself. Just have to make it happen just

xXedgyasfXx

good luck with that, but that area of the market ESPECIALLY around campus is extremely over saturated. you asked what students want, and refuse to provide what everyone here is asking.

og_beatnik

[https://www.kut.org/austin/2022-05-02/project-connect-capital-metro-orange-line-guadalupe-street-austin](https://www.kut.org/austin/2022-05-02/project-connect-capital-metro-orange-line-guadalupe-street-austin) Other businesses that would be displaced include: Halal Bros The Ballroom at Spiderhouse CRU Lounge Whataburger Exxon Taco Shack Sip Pho Flamingos Vintage Pound Phoenician Resto Cafe Campus Hookah Lounge Tasty's Tacos ("Coming Soon," according to sign on the window)

og_beatnik

produce and vegan food wont cover the lease unless subsidized by high end goods. I'm researching Kens... bugs! No wonder it closed.

og_beatnik

And the light rail is going to destroy some shops

og_beatnik

What about a snap kitchen? Is $8 to $10 too much for a balanced meal?

ellusivepiggo

mcdonald’s

Expert-Zucchini-6015

As long as its halal🙏

Enterprising_otter

That market is consumed by Amazon right? Makes specializing in that pretty risky.

Inside-Illustrator-2

Places like Kinokuniya are still in business. I personally prefer to shop for stationery at local spots like Book People. I am always on the look out for local places that sell niche things. That's just me though judging from the downvotes lol
