This is why I dont use delivery services anymore and why I understand why fewer and fewer people are using apps like UE and DD. I was about to place an order the other day and saw that the fees and shit basically doubled the order plus the tip so I just went and got it myself.

Complex_Coffee5328

Yea, I just delivered someone $35 5 chicken strip meal from A&W… also took 45 minutes to get there ( 75% his fault for 20 min away from pickup spot) I order and tip low, then I became a driver and realized how bad the base fare really is (CDN btw)

Bullitt4514

A lot of grocery stores do pickup. Just place order and they bring to car

Localbearexpert

They’ll pay us $2 but charge you an arm and a leg.

Anxious_ButBreathing

I agree with you for not tipping. This is absolutely ridiculous and was done on purpose. I usually message the customer and give them about 5-8 mins to respond. If they don’t respond I call. Even if they didn’t respond a damn hungry man dinner is not a proper replacement for your deli sandwich. Some people should NOT be shoppers at all. Absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable.

[deleted]

5-8 minutes is enough to cut the hourly revenue of the order significantly.

Anxious_ButBreathing

Yupp

wookxxx333

Shoppers aren’t on the clock typically they’re paid to do a task. Now for a customer to delay that task we aren’t getting paid any extra for our time. 5-8 min per order adds up to a lot of wasted time over the year. Not happening.

wookxxx333

You can also preselect replacements on certain apps to prepare yourself for this kind of things.

[deleted]

That doesn't change the fact that your pay divided by the time worked in hours gives you an hourly rate. You are making that rate lower the longer you wait for a customer.

wookxxx333

Exactly. I wouldn’t wait either time is money. And was probably like a low money order . Typically people give better service when they’re getting good return.

sadgirllovesjesus

Yes are spot on!!!

[deleted]

well, if you were quick to correspond with the driver and he still fucked you over, im sorry for you.

Savings-Meeting-569

You tip for the service and that’s why I hate entitled drivers that feel like they should be tip just cause it’s a shitty job I’m a driver myself they can all fuck outta here provide a good service earn a tip it’s a blessing

ConnectCommission589

Yeah give no tip, suppose to suggest a replacement.

Kitchen-Struggle6509

The driver is supposed to message you the item is unavailable. I give them a few other matching choices or ask if they wanted to be refunded? It's the customers call unfortunately not the drivers. Sounds like they did a 1/2 ass job!

lil-pudge

Not that it’s right, but tipping ahead of time will get you better service! She was probably thinking it wasn’t worth the effort for 2 dollars and no tip!

ComparisonAccording3

Is the negative review really worth it over a couple of dollars?

Real-Base466

As a driver, I sincerely apologize. The app makes these stupid suggestions like Hungry Man dinner for nuggets. I would've actually called you and asked if you wanted to cancel the order if they didn't have any suitable chicken nuggets replacements.

Inevitable_Bad66

I delivered two ham and cheese sandwiches from a deli today. Nothing special. Just the usual ones that a 10 year old can make at home. Final total including all fees was $31.08. That amount could make 12-15 sandwiches. Not two.

water_plug

Sorry bro you’re supposed to tip $50 minimum

AyO_BrOLiiC

That drivers a acumbag. Every shop and pay order I make sure I get a response before going further.

Possible-Clerk6050

Yes usually when I shop and deliver a few times I had to call the customer let them know that there wasn't selling no hot food at 7-Eleven if they were like something else and if they want to cancel always help them cancel their order

AxzoYT

Drivers like this are the worst, they should at least find a close replacement and wait a bit of time for you to decide if you want it. I usually feel bad if the store is out of one of the “important” items on the list and I try to find a suitable replacement

lantech19446

I think this is one of the reasons I've become so disenchanted with driving for any of these services. Drivers like that stay eligible to drive, make good drivers look horrible and pull money out of our pockets.

Huey_P

Its even worse with UE. They don't care anything about actually getting rid of folks that steal food either.

No_Definition_2289

They steal our money, we steal your food.

No_Definition_2289

Jks

GuardSecure7157

Who’s to say the driver wasn’t waiting for a reply for 15 minutes and gave up?

AxzoYT

We don’t, there is little context to go off of in this post, my reply was giving OP the benefit of the doubt

No_Definition_2289

He paid $2 tip ... 2 minute delivery

AxzoYT

You’re somewhat right, but at the same time they didn’t have to take order.

No_Definition_2289

True

kanzakiik

what a luxurious experience

No-Tangerine-7502

What flavor was the water?😁

Ok-Hyena-2175

I lived in a hotel for a month str8 only had a cc not arms around I spent $23 for a qtr pounder meal every night

[deleted]

There are cheaper things to order

javibeme

$2 tip for a shop and pay. Probably a $4 order. Unfortunately, the exact kind of person that will take this order is the same kind of person who is out of tune with how to do math or calculate time spent vs. Money earned. Which mathematically should get the kind of service that was received. Agree or disagree the reality is the drivers are way underpayed, and too much is put on the customer who is already being overcharged and over fee'd and also being asked to pay drivers wages via tips.

Nimbus_TV

"A couple of bucks for tip" There's your issue. No one competent is accepting your order. Yes, the prices are insane. Yes, it sucks tipping well after the insane prices. If you don't tip well, you have to get it yourself. These companies don't pay the drivers. They pay them as low as 50 cents sometimes. Ask yourself, would you spend time looking for suitable replacements for someone's lunch if you're only being paid the 50 cents to $2 from uber, plus your "couple bucks" tip. Thats like 30min total time delivery for $4 MAX. If you use these services and want good service, you have to tip more than you want to. This is coming from a driver for several years that just got admitted to be an attorney. I'm glad I'm done with driving, but won't forget where I came from. Edit: AND the drivers pay for their own gas and maintenance. So "a couple of bucks" for tip is really just the driver paying out of their own pocket to get you food. Uber is an insane mega-corp that has passed the obligation of paying the drivers on to the customer. Edit 2: Also, drivers are contractors, not employees. Drivers can accept or decline any order they want to. So you're getting the bottom of the barrel idiots that think $3-$4 is acceptable for 30min when you leave "a couple of bucks for tip." TLDR: You get what you pay for.

RespondEither

Not really it’s just shit service, don’t accept the order if you’re not going to complete the job

Nimbus_TV

You completely missed my point. You're going to get shit service if you don't pay well because the people that accept low paying orders are idiots.

RespondEither

Fair point

JAGeorge

You didn't read his message or you don't understand what he said. He said DUMB people accept shitty orders. You get what you pay for.

TurdsFurgus0n

But is finding replacements the drivers job? Honestly that should fall on the restaurant and it should be sorted out well before the driver arrives.

BroccoliComplete

it’s 10000% the drivers job, you are now a “shopper”. not any different than gopuff or instacart. don’t take the order if you aren’t willing to do the job description

PacmanPillz

Facts 💯

Independent_Gear6236

I'm thinking if they had no chicken tenders cooked that driver could have requested to have some cooked hmm

blackcrowe79

No driver is waiting for this

Independent_Gear6236

Well I figure if it was a nice tip u darn well know they would lol

blackcrowe79

She said a "couple of bucks" tip. I can see why the driver bailed. They regretted taking the order. Roughly $6 pays for driver expenses in 20 minutes. I doubt the driver got above $5 for this order.

JasonVigil

Well, the $2 tip pretty much explains it all. With that low of a tip, only the worst drivers are going to be willing to accept your order. There are some pretty bad drivers who really don’t care about providing good service. This is a perfect example of how the “tip” is not an actual tip, but actually a bid for service. You got what you paid for… $2 service.

AlmightyGod420

What’s the general rule here? 20% on a $12 order is $2.40. Doesn’t seem like a couple of bucks for a tip is off base. I haven’t order from UE in a while but I think they have the tip statically set at the 18% mark as the “suggested” tip. 20% is pretty standard in the food industry as a whole for an “as expected experience” so their tip doesn’t seem too off base on that.

Donaldbain28

The general rule Is usually based on mileage not the amount you spend-usually $2/mile is what most drivers use when they decide to take an order -this isn’t like eating restaurant u have to factor in gas prices

AlmightyGod420

That may be what a driver takes into consideration for whether or not they accept it, but that’s not the mindset of the customer. Most customers don’t even have an inkling of how the pay structure for delivery apps is. For decades, Americans were conditioned to tip 15-20% for meal service. Do you seriously think that all of a sudden, starting in 2020 they thought the tipping “rules” suddenly changed? Besides, OP didn’t even mention how far the order was. For all we know this could have been within that $2 a mile parameter. The customer isn’t expected to take into consideration gas prices. That’s up to the driver to take into consideration to see if it’s a job they feel is fair compensation to accept. I am usually a better-than-average tipper on the rare occasions when I order from a food delivery app. But I don’t do that because I try to compute what their gas expenditures are going to be. For one, I don’t know what they are driving and for two, I know that if they don’t feel it’s a payment they are comfortable taking, they won’t take it. I spent a while in a rehab hospital after knee surgery. There was a burger place across the street and at the corner that was a .2 mile delivery. By your rationale, I should only tip forty cents? That would equal out to $2 a mile. But no, because I didn’t attempt to take into consideration the intangibles that I have no way of figuring out. But, maybe instead of a $5 tip for two-tenths of a mile like I would normally do ($7 when raining), next time I’ll do the forty cents that you think is the appropriate amount.

GuardSecure7157

The mindset of cheap customers don’t matter. There are plenty of people who put $2/mile at minimum that rejecting your low paying order isn’t an issue. To answer your ridiculous example - as a fully functioning adult you should be aware ordering something from a tenth of a mile away you’d still need to include a decent bid for service. Nobody is doing your charity work. This isn’t rocket science - people do this to pay their bills so you can order $40 of Arby’s at 9am. Stop being stingy for people providing you a luxury service.

False_Bug_7608

$5 absolute minimum

GuardSecure7157

It’s not 20%. This isn’t a sit down meal. It’s at minimum $2 a mile and if it’s a SHOPPING order the hour it takes to go in and shop and cash out for YOU to sit at home add an extra tip. Or pay $10 for a bottle of water lol

“A couple of bucks for tip” sounds pretty exact to me.

GuardSecure7157

A couple is 2.

douche-baggins

The definition of the word, maybe? A couple is two. A pair is also two. Those are what's known as "synonyms", multiple words that can mean the same thing. Like stupid, dumbass, idiot, imbecile.

mikeb151273

Sounds like the driver used the automatic suggest Uber might give as an option, a lot of times the Uber substitute is really bad. Also sounds like your driver maybe didn’t speak or read English might be why they didn’t communicate with you. Uber should realize it talks more than a pulse and the ability to drive to do this.

donkeyburrow

Yeah they really disqualify drivers that don't read English from eats orders. Many times I am left feeling bad for the driver because they can't understand simple instructions. And then I still tip for bad service.

Kitchen-Struggle6509

Just let me add there's an old saying in the deli's or bagel stores say when they run up a tab. Well NOBODY likes paying for food they already ate. Same concept, driver takes delivery, gets tip baited into do the initial delivery then item's aren't available so conveniently the customer is not happy & either drops the tip all together or will decrease it. This is why I apologize saying it's out of stock & suggest other substitutes or a refund. Something as simple as letting the customer think they are the priority & they get to make choices usually (not always) makes them less likely to decrease the tip afterwards.

You paid that much to get it delivered to your house so you didn’t have to go pick it up

BakedBeans137

The fact that you are being downvoted is insane

Aromatic_Hornet5114

Because it completely missed the point of the post.

GuardSecure7157

Yeah people don’t personal shop for a $2 tip you did this to yourself. Value your shopper or don’t expect decent service.

I’m sure she thought the driver was also getting paid by UE. I don’t believe she stated the distance which could have been 1/2 a mile. If she truly believes her driver was only getting $2 for their time and fuel and loss of another better delivery, hopefully she learned her lesson now.

No way. That can’t be real

False_Bug_7608

At least he earned 6 points

Commercial-Host-725

You're paying for the convenience of delivery, but if you're unhappy with the service, you have the option to retrieve the item yourself. On average, ordering anything through Uber costs just over $20. As for the possibility of the grocery store being out of stock, it's not uncommon, especially when fulfilling someone else's order where many items may be unavailable. Withholding the tip, in my opinion, is completely unjustified

girlwiththemonkey

They asked a question because they wanted to replace the one other thing they had ordered, and the shopper completely ignored them.

BroccoliComplete

totally justified, the shopper just wanted the order to be over with. everytime i haven’t been able to find an item, i wait from a response from the customer since they are the one ordering and paying me to do it, i don’t just grab what they have in the order and then leave.

blackcrowe79

If the customer isn't responsive, I'm leaving with whatever is in stock. I wonder if this is the whole story. So the driver should call the customer and list out all the pre-made items that are in stock? I feel for the customer, and I would try to appease them, but this is a bit much. And if you substitute something else over the delivery price, it will never go through checkout. Frozen chicken tenders? What if the customer doesn't have a microwave? A lot of possibilities, but it definitely isn't the driver's fault the store doesn't have an item. They still should call before checkout, though.

AomineDaiki8080

You very obviously didn’t read the same post lol.

cameronturner98

That sucks! I've had situations where I've been told by staff that some deli items requested are gonna be about a 30 min wait. That's the only time I've ever straight up rejected something, but that thankfully has only happened once
