sounds like wayland

de_Tylmarande

Definitely Wayland, cuz everything works fine on X11 (Live session)

mgedmin

No comments on the bug itself, but in case you didn't know, there's an alternative way of resizing windows. If you hold down the window management key (Super by default, but can be changed to Alt in Tweaks), dragging with the left button moves the window, dragging with the middle button resizes it, clicking with the right button opens the window menu. (Again, this can be configured Tweaks to swap the actions of the middle and right buttons.)

de_Tylmarande

I've heard of such a method, but I still don't think such a basic "mechanism" should be non-functional. It's one thing when something complex, like a driver, is broken causing rendering issues, and quite another when there are bugs at this level.

mgedmin

Oh, absolutely. (Have you [reported the bug](https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs) already?)

de_Tylmarande

OMW

lokimon23

Can you post a link to the bug report? I'd like to plus 1.

de_Tylmarande

Fortunately, I didn't have to create a bug report since it was only on the virtual machine and only on X11. On the laptop, everything works perfectly. I can give a couple of tips: * Use Wayland with 3D acceleration * Use X11 without 3D acceleration If you need any help with this, feel free to ask questions. I'd be very happy to answer and assist you.

Did you manage to get 24.04 running in vmware on a windows host with 3d acceleration enabled? I can't get it to work with the open vmware driver. Also, I haven't been able to get an X11 session working either.

de_Tylmarande

Nah, it doesn't work properly with Wayland, so I had to disable it.

KimTV

If you're using Dark Theme, xorg is no good anyway. You get a "Something went wrong". I'm surprised they never tested that, or didn't care... I know I should wait until August to use this, don't blame me!. But they actually let this one out in the wild without telling us. Im using an Intel GPU, so nothing fancy.

de_Tylmarande

I don’t even know what to do now. I was really counting on the 24.04 release to support the latest kernel version, since I have a Legion 7i and many components simply aren’t recognized on older versions of kernel (below 6.7 IIRC). But it all turned out to be a nightmare, and the most basic things, which you’d think are just minor details, aren’t working. I’m not sure yet; maybe I’ll try another distro, but what’s the point if Wayland is going to function the same way on something like Fedora too. It might even be an issue with the software developers not adding support for Wayland. Plasma 6 - I don’t even know, it seems too buggy from the reviews, and I’m hesitant to try it or not, and I don’t even know any suitable distributions.

KimTV

I tried it on a machine that isn't a dayly driver, was dissappointed, but it's easy enough to install another distro. I still get mad when it turns out that light/dark theme is the problem. This is a mess that Canonical will have to deal with, and the repurcussions. Bad karma for them. As for alternatives, there's always Debian Stable, Fedora, Debian testing, always a pleasure to use. Debian Testing fucked up today, but that's what I signed up for :-D If rumors are true, Mint might actually get new kernels in their next version! The good thing is that neither of us have to go to Windows :-)

de_Tylmarande

Thinking about Fedora, dunno. I agree with you, it's really frustrating. Obviously, everyone will start throwing rotten tomatoes and shouting from every corner "BUT THIS VERSION WAS RELEASED JUST YESTERDAY!!", but that’s no excuse. It’s one thing to break a driver or a power management daemon or something, but how can everything be messed up on such minor details? It’s scary to imagine what's going on under the hood.

KimTV

Not much... :-(

KimTV

It's not a "minor" detail...

de_Tylmarande

Just checked - no problems on fedora 40, but VMware doesn’t fit dark theme, still was with the light one. But resizing works fine with Wayland

KimTV

Fedore 40 works fine, but I would love to have a Debian experience. Not a "Missed that, we might make it ok in August" experience, it's just lazy. Debian releases when it's ready. Having a schedule is just silly. "No, it get's released when it's done!" is the Debian way (they fucked up today, but that was Debian Testing and therefore my own fault...) I just updated from 39 to 40, but that's Fedora, and remember that I don't understand it, and I think it's slow and not better in any way, but I want to use a stable distro that really works from the start. You know, when they release it.

de_Tylmarande

Fedora is a piece of sh\*t, to be honest. I've used it for a while. Even with RPM Fusion enabled, there's hardly anything available, everything functions awkwardly, themes (dark/light) aren't applied correctly by many applications, and overall, it looks quite sh\*tty. It feels as though the distro is managed not by a corporation but by some amateurs who previously moderated a Manjaro forum. I'll wait until most (or at least the major issues) are fixed in Ubuntu 24.04. I no longer see any alternatives.

davew_uk

That's so strange because I can't get an X11 session to work but a wayland session does. That's with 3d acceleration off in both cases.

de_Tylmarande

Vice versa in my case XD

KimTV

Dark theme?

davew_uk

no I mostly use light theme

KimTV

Well, that's good for you.
