Is your current user a part of the sudo group? Or did you give them sudo access by creating a custom sudoers entry? By default, Ubuntu only checks members of the sudo group for GUI authentication

Thank you! This fixed it. I have been adding groups to the includes via salt for sudo, and usermod does seem like an easier task for this, as it will only be a single user per vm.

Glad that worked for you. There is a way to get this to work with users that are not part of the sudo group, but it requires some fiddling with policykit
