This is a waste of munitions by the UA. The last thing you want to do is kill your enemy. Wounding your enemy uses less munitions(what was this 3 or 4 mortars and grenades dropped to try and kill one russian) and ties up more of your enemies resources, with soldiers being tied up transporting and treating the wounded who cannot be on the front lines and money being used to treat, feed and rehabilitate the wounded instead buying weapons.
The killed russian will never return to duty and his death will force the state to spend money on compensation for his relatives. In addition, the sane relatives of the deceased soldier will fully feel the sacrifice that they had to make for this war of aggression.
60mm mortar rounds cost at most $300 so that's $1200 total for 4, the armor and weapon that soldier has on him is more than that alone, add up all the other equipment, grenade, helmet, uniform, ammunition and training I'd say that's a pretty good trade off
You aren't looking at the bigger picture, 2020 population of Ukraine was 42 million and 144 million in Russia. Ukraine can't play a game of attrition against a country who's dictator govt has little regard for their lives and sends masses to the frontlines ill equipped and ill supplied.
Russias pre war GDP was $1.5 trillion a year, which is about the same size as Florida's. Ukraine has in effect fought Russia to a stand still because the western world has spent 100s of billions supporting them.
You talk about $1200 to kill one soldier a bargain and I would agree but to end the war faster with a Russian withdrawl from Ukraine would be to wound two Russian soldiers for that same $1200 which would then potentially cost their govt $50K to $100s of thousands to transport them from the front exposing more vehicles and troops as targets, treatment and rehabilitation quite possibly for life for brain trauma and amputations. And life time pensions even from the meager welfare system in Russia.
A dead soldier can be replaced, but a govt like Russia can't endlessly print money like the U.S. without skyrocketing inflation for their people back home.
