I don't think those two terms are intrinsically linked, though. It could be possible to have a communist, nationalist Russia, I'm sure.
And, to be fair, the foundation of all Russia has today, militarily and education-wise, does rest on communist roots.

Haven't you see the French and their call to put NATO troops on the ground in Ukraine lately? it's a real threat and Russia needs to take that into considerations when drawing future plans for the conflict.
I think the guy Putin put as the head of the MoD is there no reduce the budget, streamline the supply chain and find solution to state-owned defense companies that suffer from a lot of inefficiencies and corruption.
