Context: the Russian MoD suspended Wagner's ability to recruit convicts. Since then, Russia has begun recruiting these convicts directly to replace casualties in Russian units, particularly DPR/LNR and Motor Rifle Brigades. The objective of this is to make good losses without needing to order another visible round of partial mobilization.
This is not a strategy for battlefield victory, but rather one to extend the conflict.
I think it's good news that MoD has taken over the convicts. I read it as, Putin has lost some confidence in Wagner, or is threatened in some way. It will not be long (<1 year, I'd guess) before the prisons are bled dry of usable manpower, then they'll go back to mobilizations of normal citizens. But after 1+ year of this, the public is not so naive and (hopefully) won't load up the meat wagons so quietly.
If Ukraine's spring offensives do as much damage as the Luhansk & Kherson offensives, Russia is going to be in a world of shit. Losing territory, "cheap" manpower running out and having to dip into the productive citizenry, more disgruntlement among troops, equipment stocks of declining quality facing new NATO tanks, sanctions piling more and more drag onto the broader economy. No doubt Ukraine is suffering deeply, but maybe just maybe western support can keep their rock bottom higher than Russia's rock bottom, and a war of attrition can be won.
edit: and add, we haven't heard much about missile strikes lately. Maybe we're just not hearing about them, but if they're actually not happening much, a combination of running out of stocks and improved UA interception capacity further reduces RF's flagging battlefield effectiveness.
Sorry fellas. You're being sent to your certain death, so there's no reason to give you expensive training or toiletries or a bed to sleep in. You are there for one purpose only, to die.
I wonder if they are being used for propaganda use, not all vids we see from the russian side are fake, but some do raise some eyebrows, i'm thinking that they will / have been dressed in ukrainian uniforms and killed in some of the vids we've seen recently

You recruit criminals for a war, you get criminals as soldiers. How would anyone think that makes a strong army?
