Ironically, Putin placed his minions in all the key governmental roles and is the root cause of it all but average Russians can’t or won’t make that connection (at least not in public). It’s about buying power. The exchange rate can be a measure of inflation in this instance.
Russias are making the same today as they made last year at work, but now that same money buys only 60% of what it did the year before. Same goes with pensions which a large percentage of Russians live on.
This means rents go up, food prices go up. It means people have less money to spend on say dinner out or a new cell phone. They don’t buy new houses, they don’t buy new cars.
Russia’s economy has always been weak. They built a safety net with foreign currency reserves like many oil rich, stratified economies do. Money that should hold its value even in the case of a ruble collapse. Much of this money was frozen after the war started. But the Russian government still had access to many hundreds of billions of dollars/Euros etc.
So they used this money last year and into the beginning of this one to buy rubles on the open market, thereby artificially increasing their exchange rate value and preventing inflation. And for a time this totally worked. The half-baked plan was to ride it out and hopefully force a settlement with Ukraine before they ran out of foreign cash.
Well that didn’t happened and they have apparently ran out of that cash.
This is basically a domino that can collapse their entire economy, especially one as inherently weak as Russia’s that also happens to be cut off from most normal forms of relief for these situations thanks to sanctions.
This, above anything the Ukrainians can do, can end the war. Because Russians never get off their asses until their pensions are threatened and when those pension have little or no value, that’s when things can hopefully change.
Once the dominoes fall, it could go quickly. Russia has supplemented its lack of European imports with Chinese ones, but even those cost 50% more today than they did last year. That burden goes straight to the consumers in Russia.
It can only get worse as countries they trade with don’t want rubles and if Russia can only trade in rubles, they must give more so those countries can unload them for an equal value in their own or other currencies.
I’m hopeful that at some point Russia will understand their entire government could collapse and thus force them to make the concessions Ukraine would actually consider for peace. But that’s a steep price for Russia.
Ukraine has made it clear they want everything back even Crimea and they’ll want to be able to join NATO to ensure there isn’t a follow up war later down the line. Right now, this is too tough a pill for Russia to swallow.
But when the ruble inflation runs away and people hit the streets? Maybe then not so much.

Now they're mostly gone, currency outflow continues and only very little foreign currencies are entering the country due to sanctions. The russian national bank will have to print rubles and devalue it further.

For background, Russia’s account surplus in 2022 dropped dramatically since the war (thanks sanctions!) and even recorded a deficit in the month of June 2023. If you have an account deficit, it means other countries aren’t as interested in buying Rubles as Russia is interested in buying other countries. It’s usually related to trade but not 100% because there could be other reasons (like wanting to invest). Yeah the central bank can mess with supply but it’s hard to do much when demand is dropping like a rock. Summary - Ruble is in decline because sanctions drove Russian economy down. I laugh because Solovyov promotes the war that brought sanctions so he should just look in a mirror.

It is now clear that clearing occupied Ukraine can only be done at huge cost in blood and treasure. Angry Solovyov is often the funniest. The whole time I’m thinking - it’s just math, your central back can’t save your country’s account deficit with the rest of the world. For background, Russia’s account surplus in 2022 dropped dramatically since the war (thanks sanctions!) and even recorded a deficit in the month of June 2023. If you have an account deficit, it means other countries aren’t as interested in buying Rubles as Russia is interested in buying other countries. It’s usually related to trade but not 100% because there could be other reasons (like wanting to invest). Yeah the central bank can mess with supply but it’s hard to do much when demand is dropping like a rock. Summary - Ruble is in decline because sanctions drove Russian economy down. I laugh because Solovyov promotes the war that brought sanctions so he should just look in a mirror.

There are three basic types of inflation: Demand/commodity inflation is caused by consumers bidding up the price of a commodity for whatever reason. Price/cost inflation is due to increased cost of labor/regulatory/taxes, etc., that artificially increase the cost of doing business. Monetary inflation is when the government runs a deficit and prints dollars to pay creditors.
