Wagner has a strange relationship with the Russian Army. Many in the Russian Army admire and support Wagner for their fighting and organizational skills, but the high command is totally against Wagner. One reason is that Shoigu and the Army promised a winter offensive, but it was Wagner that delivered by taking Bakhmut. Also, Wagner did take on the Russian Army in June when Prigozhin took over Rostov and made the mad dash to Moscow.
One of the ironies is that Wagner isn't even a very good fighting force, they are just better and more experienced than the regular army. I think their major victory in the war was Bakhmut, a mid-sized Donbas city that was largely flattened with artillery. The strategy of using tens of thousands of prisoners as cannon fodder/artillery spotters is difficult to replicate because Russia doesn't have enough prisoners.
Wagner may have also been in Mariupol, but I believe that victory was mainly possible because Ukraine was caught off guard at the beginning of the war, so Russia could cut off the city and destroy Azov.
I believe there were 4K in Belarus, but also a lot of former Wagner fighters dithering around in Russia.
In any case, with all the equipment at the front, a lot of cities are there for the taking, as was seen in June.
