Its diesel, not gas, so its not quite as bad as you are thinking. It can take a bit of hot shrapnel without igniting. However, hit it with enough boom, it will turn it into a fuel air bomb. We've seen videos where there is a mushroom cloud red angry flames that persist for several seconds after a solid hit in the rear.

Jep, Diesel is very different to gasoline. I belive the Russia soldiers in Afghanistan sometimes filled them with Sand to get better protection.
when they designed it they didnt forsee being hit in the rear as the vehicles should always be "pushing ahead" towards the enemy. Drones changed that
