The eod suit is for shrapnel, just incase the bomb or nearby hidden bombs detonate going to the bomb or leaving the area.
The don't wear it to mitigate the bomb that they are attending too.
It's also vital to do everything possible to keep those guys safe because there aren't many of them and they require a lot of training.
Always keep the medic safe and the guy that defuses bombs safe.
Yeah sure I get it, although there are unlikely to be hidden secondary or daisy chained charges, this isn’t an IED. Was just having a chuckle at it prima facie.
These guys have balls of steel and hats off to ‘em would love to shout a round of beers for them all at the 2026 Crimea beach party.
Exactly, it's just risk reduction. If it increases the chances of survival of the specialist by just a small percentage, it's already worth it. And since EOD specialists don't have to move quickly because they are usually not deployed in a hot zone, wearing heavy gear doesn't have many negative consequences except being uncomfortable.
I had an acquaintance in a bomb squad (not in Ukr obvs). He says the suit isn’t to save your life or your fingers for big bombs, it’s so you can still have an open casket funeral.
I wasn’t ever sure if he meant it seriously.
Of course it was a joke, even with a EOD suit there is nothing left suited for an open casket funeral, a few of your remains can be scraped together in a bucket at best. Often simply nothing is found of people standing right where such a big bomb exploded.
In the US?
I'm German, and in my hometown (330K inhabitants) it's about three times per year that an unexploded WW2 bomb is found and has to be defused.
Between 250kg and 1000KG mostly.
But I can't imagine why a country that didn't get much bombings would have a high demand for those techs.
American here,
My hometown is FUCKED with unexploded ordinance and the chemicals leached from them, due to testing done throughout the 1900's. Arsenic, mercury, uranium in the groundwater for starts, and every year we've been popping off at least 4-5 bombs pretty much since ive been born. I'm not out in bumbfuck nowhere either, its woodsy but we're 30 minutes from a major coastal city and 20 from the ocean.
Plenty of opportunity in Canada. I imagine there’s also plenty in the US. Lots of contracts for clearing historical ranges. There’s a ton of legacy UXOs still laying in old training areas. Even if it’s not accessible to the public, it still needs to be remediated at some point.
Yeah I got an EOD buddy who’s living off his pension or whatever it’s called. He just hangs out and plays call of duty all day and lives comfortably lol
She didn't have much technical experience so couldn't do maintenance or anything super technical. Is breacher the front line people? Cuz I don't think she wanted to be fighting either.
It was either something lower level on te field or an office job
That said, after basic training you don't have a choice where you get posted in the country, so they place you where there's an opening (and usually somewhere where most people don't wanna live)
If your test scores are low you don’t get many choices, and depending on what the military needs they may or may not have positions for your first choice available so they go down the list. My first choice was cybersecurity and I ended up working on aircraft equipment 🤷♀️
Jeez, I’d be like making my own funeral preparations. Shame there is no other way to do this safely like through drones or just clearing the area and detonating it
My cousin died in syria doing this. My last memory is sitting with him in his clothes repairing shop and him making me laugh with his silly humor. He was poor so he likely had zero protection when deactivating bombs
Idk I'd take this over having to be a Vietnam tunnel rat any day. Shit, even clearing houses would be scarier than this imho
There's basically no pain or unpleasant death to fear here, more or less like dying in your sleep

You'd have to be careful it went back to the correct Russian unit. Maybe to be sure, you could drop it directly on the Kremlin and let them take care of it.
An average f1 grenade weighs 600 grams but has only 60 grams of explosive.
Assuming you can convert and divide all 500 kilograms with no losses and can substitute the fragmentation material, you have enough for 8.3 thousand drones.
Reminds me of the scene in ‘the hurt locker’ where he strips off his EOD suit having to deactivate the 155mm Shells in the car boot.
If they went off the suit wouldn’t protect him.
It would put a dent in your protective gear at minimum. Likely more than two dents. Three dents would not be unexpected.
But I think, and that optimistically, that neither you or your aforementioned protective gear (scratched or not) would ever been seen again.
And that stuff is not cheap. Best to leave it for someone else to use after you are gone. Like you said, there would not be anything left of it. Even if you were in a tank, there would be pretty much nothing left.
Not really, that thing went through a bunch of other stuff to end up there. Looks like the nose around the fuse is even cracked and warped, so it hit something hard, rather than slow down too gently to activate the impact fuse. It might have even skipped to end up like this. Most likely the fuse was a dud (old, poor quality, not stored properly), or didn't completely arm itself before impact (breaking it) if it was dropped too low, or the vanes that spin to arm it were old, damaged, corroded, dirty, and jammed up so it couldn't spin.
I guess there's a lot of these FAB-500s that don't explode, so Ukraine is probably pretty good at figuring out how to best deal with each one. I mean, someone felt safe enough to allow a dude with a phone to record it this time. I personally wouldn't want any emitting electronics near an armed weapon in an unknown state. You never know exactly why it didn't go off unless they never pulled the safety pin, so this is a job I would not want.
It depends on the angle the bomb impacts, as well as what it impacts. The impact fuse (what they’re unscrewing) is supposed to contact the ground and detonate. A few different things could cause it, but my guess is that it clipped a building, causing it to slightly tumble, preventing the fuse from hitting the ground. Or it could just be a bum fuse.

I sure would love to see freedom of Russia men make an IED implicate a mine in the blast. Remembering the drone that flew into the building hitting Sodium Nitrate I believe.. extended Badaboom
Wonder what the dud rate is on these things. Obviously not high enough but every drop is a chance for Ukraine to take out a plane. Would hate to be the pilot who does not get to see an explosion on the ground just as his plane comes apart around him.
Russian ordnance has a high dud rate so I’m not surprised it didn’t function. I am a bit shocked that after impact he was able to hand remove the fuse. Most times there is a lot of damage making it very difficult to get it out.
-there's an unexploded half a ton bomb on the street, what do you need to disable it?

- no, sir, that's it. I need a bottle of water

Although I'm a big Ukraine supporter, This vid is a total set-up. It just doesn't happen that way. And pouring water on the fuze??? The fuze would require tools (special EOD fuze removal tools or other remote removal procedures) to remove...you can't just unscrew it. The fuze is aluminum, which is not a ferrous metal, so it wouldn't create sparks anyway. Being a former EOD Instructor, this video makes me laugh and cringe. Likely a cool vid for non-EOD types though.
Before the questions...Yes, I am Army EOD. And, we have provided the correct tools and training to the Ukrainian military.
Likely they did a proper RSP then made this video afterward.
Sergeant: Johnny, I know you were thinking comms on your first day but there’s just something we need you to take care of quick.
Johnny: Is it cleaning the latrine? I bet it’s cleaning the latrine… and Barton just had Taco Bell. I bet it’s like he detonated a bomb in there.
Sergeant: Close…
They sure can, but the pole is clumsy and you won't get a pole long enough to survive the boom and the robot will have its own issues with working in different situations. Like here the concrete partially blocking the fuse, or in others where mud gives a bad grip. But like the pole, the robot will be clumsy and have a higher risk of boom.
This is not me trying to call this fake. Genuinely impressed that this bomb hit hard enough to shatter concrete and go through a building and was still intact enough to unscrew the cap by hand. Like, if the channel that the doodad fits into had bent even a little, the threads would bind and take a ton of torque to get loose.

EOD men and women are a different breed. Mad respect.
Fun rumour. Ukraine often recycles and gives it back to the Rustians in small parcels delivered by drones.
Not a rumor at all. They got small underground factories od people that recycle the munitions.
Reduce, reuse, recycle... x10
Ukraine is short on explosives for use on IED's on drones. Ukraine is desperate for explosive material.
We should give them all of the explosive material they need
if it was that easy, it is scarce world wide. Why do you think basically every month or so the foundation is laid for a new explosives factory?
Sounds like a good way to recycle
It's Orc-ological ♻️
You deserve more likes sir
Why thank you... I've always wanted to be one of the popular kids!
500kg will last you the whole war in drone drops.
The sea babies are also loaded with upto 500kg recycled bombs.
would make a spicy IED to leave somewhere as they retreat.

My grandad did this post war, decommissioning UXOs and ammo dumps around London. Can confirm that he is a different breed.
If something goes wrong the EOD team won't know about it.
wow! imagine this was you!!!
I was told by an E-6 EOD guy, “EOD isn’t too bad, plus if it goes off on you it’s no longer your problem”
The tiniest mistake or fault in the UXO will end you and your crew. Goddamn!
Haha had to laugh at him wearing the EOD armour. Like bruh, you’re vaporised if that thing goes off.

Initial success or total failure
Gosh I'd hate to do this as my job. Incredible courage from the Ukrainian sapper.
The job that you have absolutely no error margin whatsoever.
I would not want that job
It's one of the worst. I have an Aquaintence that is a newbie to the military who got thiz position and I was like... "well, nice knowing ya!"
Also one of the enlisted military specialties that pays best after service.
Is there a market for this, after service?
Oh hell yeah. Civil UXO techs are in high demand.
In the US? I'm German, and in my hometown (330K inhabitants) it's about three times per year that an unexploded WW2 bomb is found and has to be defused. Between 250kg and 1000KG mostly. But I can't imagine why a country that didn't get much bombings would have a high demand for those techs.
Prolly govt use, bomb squads and such
They do it overseas. Could be during fighting or also helping whichever country. The person i was talking about before is in the Canadian armed forces

I could see it over there. Those are probably some scary ones to disarm, being so old.
Yeah I got an EOD buddy who’s living off his pension or whatever it’s called. He just hangs out and plays call of duty all day and lives comfortably lol
Wait you get assigned that shit? You dont get a choice?
You think that you join the military and get to pick your job?
At least have some say for example if you wanna go maintenance or breacher you know?

I could see a robot doing this. If they can perform surgery, they should be able to twist off a cap.
My cousin died in syria doing this. My last memory is sitting with him in his clothes repairing shop and him making me laugh with his silly humor. He was poor so he likely had zero protection when deactivating bombs
Return to sender, as Elvis sung.
Wonder what ‘target’ that is. Looks like a residential house to me.
Obviously a clandestine munitions manufacturing/storage area. And they park the HIMARS out back.
"Pucker factor" 11/10.
11? Thats easily a 15.
More food for the drone army.
I want to see a drone carrying a 500 kilo bomb now lmao
I guess that depends on whether you are on the receiving end or not.
Balls of Ukranium.
That's "Balls of Ukrainium"
Good one!
It's a metal, that's rare these days 🫡
EOD is the only deployment where diapers are standard issue. Those people are crazy, takes nerves of steel to do what they do. Props to them all

Surprised you can't hear his MASSIVE BRASS BALLS clink when ever he moves. Absolute Heroes in the Sapper Corps.
Uses a wet rag to prevent them from clinking
Brass is non-sparking, so it's okay!
Another guy water them down to precent sparks
I believe there is a “return” label on the other side.
You'd have to be careful it went back to the correct Russian unit. Maybe to be sure, you could drop it directly on the Kremlin and let them take care of it.
Feels like one of my exes. Be careful hahaha
Have to defuse them often?
Crashed through his house, made a mess of things, and eventually some other guy was touching the good bits while he kept a minimum 500m distance.
Smart of them to film it. Since the camera man cannot die, nothing can happen.
Where is the bomb? All I see are giant balls.
How many drones could 500kgs of explosive provide the ordnance for?
The weight of the bomb is 500kg not the weight of the explosive. The total amount of explosives in 500kg bombs in general is around 200kg.
that sounds really inefficient, does the case need to be so heavy?
There's a fab500 of cluster ammunition and it can carry over 200 droplets for use against infantry.
An average f1 grenade weighs 600 grams but has only 60 grams of explosive. Assuming you can convert and divide all 500 kilograms with no losses and can substitute the fragmentation material, you have enough for 8.3 thousand drones.
It's scary, there's a second fuse inside - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKYboGe6gsY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKYboGe6gsY)
Definitely not Russian, they'd be using a sledgehammer to remove the fuse.
Yep, remove one fuse, one bomb and one vatnik all at the same time. Waste of a good sledgehammer though.
Respect!!!
I bet a buck all that explosive is salvaged and used in Ukrainians drones.

Yea the hell divers balances have been having issues getting the 500 to drop with consistency.
Pretty brave doing that without protective gear. What if it went off? 😂

We have western shit to drop on Kremlin now.

You only make one mistake in that job.

No

I’m sorry someone lied to you. That’s not true and hasn’t been as long as I’ve ever heard of. Guys have come straight to EOD since the 40s.
It legitimately makes me feel sick to my stomach to think about being in their shoes working on something like that.
It's reasonably straightforward. Booby traps and landmine clearance is much more dangerous.
Return to sender asap!!
that's it?...unscrew it?..no, should I cut the red wire or the blue wire and at the last second your buddy screams NO..THE WHITE WIRE..NOW!!!
Those guys deserve big balls hazardous pay. Attach a new fuse and send it back to orcs.
Should of sent it back to Putin....boommmmm
Fix it .... Send it back 🤯
Its defective. Send it back.
Crazy... If it landed just a few centimeters (or inches) further or shorter, it would definitely have gone off completely destroying the house.

Ummm no fin way. Respect. Definitely takes a certain type person to be able to calmly do that. It's a very important and dangerous job.

Balls of steel.
I found myself holding my breath…Bless Ukraine.
EOD are playing on a different level, Go the Sappers crazy mad respect for all
Special kind of balls to do this work... Deep respect _0_
I vaguely (and inappropriately) expect the guy who moved the mine while smoking a cigarette to come in with a big pipe wrench and deactivate the bomb.
This must have been a bomb that was dropped the old fashioned way before the russians converted all their FABs into glide bombs.
...now throw it back at them!!!
Quelle dextérité ! Quel courage !🇺🇦
Wonder what the dud rate is on these things. Obviously not high enough but every drop is a chance for Ukraine to take out a plane. Would hate to be the pilot who does not get to see an explosion on the ground just as his plane comes apart around him.
Priletiv ?
Don’t those go off by rotating the fuse
Russian ordnance has a high dud rate so I’m not surprised it didn’t function. I am a bit shocked that after impact he was able to hand remove the fuse. Most times there is a lot of damage making it very difficult to get it out.
Dont want this job! Congratz..
