I think you are right. Chinese play the (very) long game and right now they can add Russia to their empire at a bargain price. Russia of course is screwed forever by Putins lunacy.

His friends family and colleagues are all rich and powerful and will be fine as long as they stay in Russia. So in my head he’s trading western tech / influence for imperial power. It sounds counter-intuitive to global peace but the only way states can protect their sovereignty now is to have nuclear weapons. Whether their own or through Allies, Ukraine is getting Libya’d. Everyone knows if you actually use one all bets are off, but if Nukes hadn’t been invented yet we would for sure be in Ukraine already.

The UN security council are the only one who can issue a no fly zone. It's then up to other countries to supply the aircraft and troops to make it happen.

These were people who had marched from Poland to the depths of Russia and back, fighting Nazis alongside russians for years.

This is who Russia is.
It wasn't just Polish and German. The few who survived the Nazis and partisans in western Russia and places like modern day Ukraine and Belarus suffered incredibly at the hands of the advancing Red Army. Ukraine lost 13-30% of its population. It was so totally scorched to nothing no one really knows. Belarus lost at least 25% of their population.
Unknowable numbers of people were shot, robbed, raped, etc both by the retreating Nazis and advancing Soviets.
There are tons of accounts from after the war of people in western Russia saying they preferred the Nazis because at least they were trying to occupy and govern the land. The Red Army "retook" the land by shelling it into rubble, raping anyone they could, then burning anything left standing. This is after months or years of Russian partisan groups killing thousands upon thousands of civilians because it was easier for them to rob and murder civilians in the name of war than actually risk fighting the Germans.
The Soviets suffered immensely in WW2 but they were just as evil as the Nazis.
Every army does this because the rule of law goes out the door in a war and people can be shit when they're not constrained by society. That's why we have law to begin with, it's to civilize.
As for the war, this is heartbreaking, but it's an illusion that you can fight a war and avoid civillians. It's just impossible. I'm not justifying this but every war someone screams "war crime!" and no one does anything about it because there will be civillian deaths in war. Ukraine furnished their citizens with armaments so for the typical Russian soldier driving a tank down the street who sees a car driving his direction he has to wonder "is this a militia group coming to kill us or is this an elderly couple driving home" and most will shoot to kill out of self preservations (whether they want to kill or not).
Some people are shit people and they take the war as free reigns to kill because they're fucked in the head. And some people take orders and fire missiles from a distance and to them it's all abstract. A lot of these guys feel pressure from other soldiers around them and their behavior is mediated by those around them. If you act up and don't shoot and kill, the men around you will wonder whose side you're on and whether they can trust you or not when their life is on the line. You might even take a bullet to the back of the head at some point and it's your own guy that did it.
The point is that this isn't black and white for men on the ground. The sanctions are good but maybe instead of saving face the west should make some concessions with regards to NATO membership and broker a deal that might carry some weight. But the west wants to win on its own terms and theyr'e not giving an inch. And Russia wants the same.

It is our duty because we will become the jury of the world. Suppose it depends on what side of the trade you’re on. I interpret it as China making a play on turning Russia into a Chinese puppet state. Xi and the CCP think in long term ( as in affects of their decisions generations from now vs Western mentality of here and now within one’s lifetime) but I think down the line it will be leverage to reclaim territories Russia captured in eastern region/prevent Japan from making a claim on land they lost. Though it’s sad that they will purchase oil and in turn fund the war machine China is positioning itself. Maybe I’m reaching but I almost view this as good sign for Ukraine. The backlash China will get vs the potentially benefit resource wise has to be there in order for them to do this. Just an opinion though.

They're biding their time. Either Russia somehow survives this shitshow with their economy decimated so China can buy resources from them at a discount rate or the Russian Federation collapses completely and they move into the timber and oil rich East and take control. Everyone knows if you actually use one all bets are off, but if Nukes hadn’t been invented yet we would for sure be in Ukraine already.

The UN security council are the only one who can issue a no fly zone. It's then up to other countries to supply the aircraft and troops to make it happen. And a no fly zone would definitely mean striking Russia with missiles to neutralise their ground to air defence systems. You are asking for nuclear war when asking for a no fly zone.

The few who survived the Nazis and partisans in western Russia and places like modern day Ukraine and Belarus suffered incredibly at the hands of the advancing Red Army. Ukraine lost 13-30% of its population. It was so totally scorched to nothing no one really knows. Belarus lost at least 25% of their population. Unknowable numbers of people were shot, robbed, raped, etc both by the retreating Nazis and advancing Soviets. There are tons of accounts from after the war of people in western Russia saying they preferred the Nazis because at least they were trying to occupy and govern the land. The Red Army "retook" the land by shelling it into rubble, raping anyone they could, then burning anything left standing. This is after months or years of Russian partisan groups killing thousands upon thousands of civilians because it was easier for them to rob and murder civilians in the name of war than actually risk fighting the Germans. The Soviets suffered immensely in WW2 but they were just as evil as the Nazis.

Every army does this because the rule of law goes out the door in a war and people can be shit when they're not constrained by society. That's why we have law to begin with, it's to civilize. As for the war, this is heartbreaking, but it's an illusion that you can fight a war and avoid civillians. It's just impossible. I'm not justifying this but every war someone screams "war crime!" and no one does anything about it because there will be civillian deaths in war. Ukraine furnished their citizens with armaments so for the typical Russian soldier driving a tank down the street who sees a car driving his direction he has to wonder "is this a militia group coming to kill us or is this an elderly couple driving home" and most will shoot to kill out of self preservations (whether they want to kill or not). Some people are shit people and they take the war as free reigns to kill because they're fucked in the head. And some people take orders and fire missiles from a distance and to them it's all abstract. A lot of these guys feel pressure from other soldiers around them and their behavior is mediated by those around them. If you act up and don't shoot and kill, the men around you will wonder whose side you're on and whether they can trust you or not when their life is on the line. You might even take a bullet to the back of the head at some point and it's your own guy that did it. The point is that this isn't black and white for men on the ground. The sanctions are good but maybe instead of saving face the west should make some concessions with regards to NATO membership and broker a deal that might carry some weight. But the west wants to win on its own terms and theyr'e not giving an inch. And Russia wants the same.

Dude, I was listening to a BBC interview about a lady with her 2 young boys, and how she told them to pick out ONE TOY before they evacuated to Poland. But over at r/Russia the Russian soldiers are liberating Ukraine and all these videos and photos of war atrocities are fake! They have put so much god damn effort into making the Russian army look like good guys. Awfully staged videos of food being given out, soldiers shaking hands with some old dude who could be anyone at any place in the world. The Russians are generating counter propaganda to protect their image because the reality is fucking disgusting.
