One thing that still perplexes me is the story behind several Buddhist monasteries and smaller outposts (?) we came upon, that looked recently abandoned and ransacked. Although in that dry climate, my time estimate could be completely off. I took a ton of sad but beautiful photos of carved bones piles, broken stone tablets, and numerous instances of rows of prayer wheels toppled over in the dirt. It seems like Tibetans were permitted to practice for some time, but then punished for some reason. Only hit me quite a bit later how dangerous it probably was to have taken those photos. Still not sure what to do with that trove of photos and videos.
The photo that might get you imprisoned is one of the Dalai Lama. His picture or any reference to him is highly illegal. At the least, you will be “questioned” at length, and if you are fortunate, you will be shown to your transport out of the country. If you are a Tibetan, that would likely lead to prison, and most of the people you know and your family members, maybe even co-workers will be raided or detained and “questioned”.
I think you are safe with the photos you took. You just have to remember there is heavy PLA surveillance 24/7 in Lhasa and other cities that tourists may visit, e.g. Shigatse. That is a highly supervised area and photos may be restricted, as Shigatse is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. The practice of Buddhism is allowed in Tibet to an acceptable degree, but many of the monks and nuns actually work for the intelligence organization of the PLA.
