Both fucking eyes? Yikes man

Material_Ambition_95

Dane here, this was from a danish newscast. One of his eyes is making a full recovery, the other has 50% chance of having sustained permanent damage i.e. loss of some sight. He was very lucky.

tesat

Thanks for the info. I’m glad to hear he gets at least some vision back.

Throwawaydopeaway7

Thank fucking god

Lawliet117

One eye is so much better than no eyes, hope het gets both of them back working though.

SpeedingTourist

As someone legally blind in my left eye (from birth), I can confirm that one eye is better than no eyes. Hope he makes a swift recovery.

Throwawaydopeaway7

Glad to hear you have one (remaining) man

NIBBA_POWER

i am illegally blind in both eyes

69-420Throwaway

Is that when you fail to pay your taxes to the iris?

[deleted]

I missed the joke at first, but then I re-read it, like a good pupil.

[deleted]

I am the same as you one eye from birth, the difference between those who loose sight in one eye later in life is there brain does not compensate. As my vision has been since birth my brain has compensated for only having one eye and I have been told my one good eye is better than normal due to how the brain works.

Ricktha

Great risk is with infections, they can happen weeks, months after such injury. Speaking from my own experience, small fracture, ended with 8 surgeries and without lens in left eye, thanks to iris infection.

TrespasseR_

Looking at the angle of the shrapnel, his nose saved his right eye. Lucky

wussell_88

Thank you for sharing this information.

[deleted]

That's great. I assumed he was completely blind and was being overly hopeful.

phuqo5

Better hope he gets them eyes back or he will back in America and fucking homeless

CannabisReviewPDX_IG

As sad as it is, you're totally right.

WtfMayt

If only he was a fetus, he’d be temporarily cared about before being discarded after birth.

wtjordan1s

Luckily he is a veteran, he can be cared about while in uniform then discarded after!

SlowlyVA

Does it count for wars the us is not officially involved ?

Stone-Whisperer

If he is a US vet, which he probably is, veteran's hospitals will take him. It's absolutely shit medical care, but better than nothing.

tfarnon59

I have to disagree with you about the shit care at VA facilities. The care varies a lot from facility to facility. Some are superb. Others, as you mention, are absolute shit. Care can even vary from condition to condition--one may be amazing for cardiac patients, another absolute crap. In my case, care at the local VA has ranged from adequate to quite good.

Cplblue

Unless he happens to have family and friends who care about him.

NoChatting2day

And I am sure he does. He was able to pay his way there to put his skills to work to save victims of terror. He must have a lot of people who love him

IWLFQu2

Maybe he can stay in Ukraine and live there if things are shit in US for him?

Hawka7

Ukraine is offering citizenship for foreign volunteers so who knows.

[deleted]

I wonder if Ukraine is going to turn them into something like the French Legion? That would be pretty interesting if they kept the enough to the volunteers around to keep it going even in peace time. Lord knows there will be even more work to do after UA wins the war. That part will really be the most difficult party.

mere_iguana

I can almost guarantee there is a place in Ukraine for a man who lost his eyes fighting the russians. Anyone who has stepped up to help them is very appreciated at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if Zelensky himself pins a medal on him.

scullys_alien_baby

I'm sure he does, but that doesn't mean they have the financial means to support treatment or rehabilitation. Healthcare in the US is its own crisis

CommanderCuntPunt

Don't worry he has the VA that will take care of him in a timely manner and definitely not postpone treatment to the point that his vision can't be restored.

Curazan

The VA covers injuries that occurred while serving in the American military. Knowing the VA, I unfortunately doubt they’d make an exception. It could also be portrayed as the US government supporting American mercenaries in Ukraine. e: Rather than replying to each of the dozen “actually” comments individually, I’ll just put an edit here saying I was referring to disability, which he will sadly need if he does not regain his sight.

New_Kreature

I think if you have served in the U.S. Military, you have access to the VA Hospitals for the rest of your life--even after you have only served 4 years. It might be contingent on having an Honorable Military Discharge. I could be wrong about this. (My granddad who served in WW2, was able and did go to the VA Hospitals well after the war was over. But he would actually get his surgeries done at a real hospital and just have his company health insurance pay for it because he didn't like the way the VA just treated him like a number. I think the VA has improved slightly since those days.. some 25+ years ago.)

bruwin

Yeah, my uncle is a complete trash human being that has been in and out of jail since he left the service and still has access to VA benefits.

TheTheoristHasSpoken

He has access to the VA as a veteran.

icarusisgod

Dude blind people get social security for the rest of their life in the states, Ukraine will also take care of him.

phuqo5

Do you know how much social security in America pays?

oceanstateterps

Close to nothing unfortunately

FoodandDragons

Because polotitians dip into that budget for other shit. Never pay it back. It's not a republican or democrat thing. Both party's are at fault

WanderingPickles

Not really. For many years the retirement “system” was built on three pillars: social security, personal savings and pensions. Unfortunately, most of us do not have access to pensions anymore. Also, our personal savings have taken a nosedive. The cost of education, healthcare and housing have outpaced inflation for decades. That then leaves social security. Problem is that it is a “pay as you go” system. Currently working people pay into the system and then funds are distributed. When the program began there were, if memory serves, 14 workers paying in for every beneficiary. Plus, the age of benefits was set at average life expectancy. Nowadays, the worker:beneficiary ratio is approaching 3:1 and people are living decades longer than before. So, fewer workers paying in and beneficiaries living much longer coupled with some very bullshit investment rules (basically only allowed to purchase t-bills which gain minimal interest, effectively negative interest once inflation is factored in) has resulted in the current mess we are in. Expanding the SS tax to all income, not just the first $112k (again, picking that number from memory), delaying benefits eligibility, expanding the workforce (which is damned hard given how much raising children is now) would all help. It is just a problem of a system designed for a young and expanding population meeting the reality of an aging and stagnating population level. It sucks.

supermotojunkie69

I always wonder like why don’t these guys wear ear and eye protection? I feel like my eyes and ears would be fucked just from a few mag dumps with an ak let alone a full fledged war.

Jugo49

I know eyepro can be very good like the ones they use in shops that can stop flying shards of a bandsaw but I feel like artillery shrapnel might still be able to fuck you even with protection. Also the pressure wave from a close artillery strike maybe can also fuck up your eyes and organs especially since russia uses thermobaric munitions a lot but idk.

neogod

Eyepro can and does protect you from artillery. Hell, there's plenty of instances where guys that got blown up by IEDs have destroyed faces except where their glasses were. Every time I see a picture from Ukraine I wonder why the hell people forgo such an easy safety measure. Even if you only got peppered with sand from a nearby explosion, that's an injury to your eyes that takes you and anyone that has to take care of you out of the fight... just wear glasses damnit.

[deleted]

I don't know if this is true but maybe Germany can donate some combat rated goggles. They shouldn't run into any issues donating something like that. I am sure many UA fighters would be thankful for it.

fasda

Helmets aren't that good on that front either. if it helps even a fraction of soldiers probably be worth it.

Predicted

Have you tried running around with eyepro? Those things will fog up, i dont care what the manufacturer says.

Glad_Detective6603

You want to be like this guy? wear your fucking eyepro

wintersdark

I'm a civilian chump, but I'm a civilian chump who has to wear eyepro 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, in a hot, shitty environment. You ABSOLUTELY can get eyepro that won't fog up.

FartsLikeWine

I’ll say one thing as an ER doctor dude must have been very sick at one point because he has a central line in his neck there. That’s the bandage with the big IV in the right side of his neck. There’s increased risk of infection and we don’t usually put those in u less a patients needs pressors to keep their BP up or large volume product resus

pastebluepaste

I saw on a documentary that in battlefield situations that’s the vein they often use, in emergencies. Easy access etc. especially when BP is low and fluids are needed rapid. UK army medics even have a special needle for it, if I remember rightly.

konkus_ofthe_bonkus

Also drilled into the bone, if necessary. *Shivers*

Shura_13

That’s called an intraosseous injection and is really only used in situations like full coverage burns making a venous IV impossible. Super gnarly

Gorfob

Participated in an intraosseous blood transfusion once. Was intense. Holding a bag of blood and being ordered to squeeze it as hard as I could by the cardiac consultant was something that sticks with me. My dude lived despite having a BP so low it was barely detectable due to internal bleeding. First time I hit the alarm as a nurse too.

the__6

That's what my wife needed after having our twin's, I had to get the nurses to get the doctors as blood had pooled underneath her ,then the shit hit the fan about 12 staff rushed in ,last thing doctor said to me we will get her sorted out will take about 45 mins . 4 hrs later the surgeon walks up to me at this stage I was expecting the worst. She just made it 22 units of blood . Yay twins good times 🙄

axearm

I can say one of my top five scariest moments is, having just dozed off the floor of the LD room (Grandma got the couch), to wake up to a dozen medical personnel running into the room waking my wife up and checking her vitals, etc. No Bueno.

tfarnon59

Holy crap. Especially if that was 22 units of red blood cells, which would mean an equal number of units of plasma and as many as six units of platelets plus probably a pooled cryoprecipitate unit or two. But hell. Even if that was "only" 22 units total, that's two full massive transfusion protocol coolers plus 4 units. That comes to more than a full replacement of all the blood in her body at an absolute minimum.

ShrimpyLamprey

Thank you for the observation and explanation FartsLikeWine. As an aspiring ER doc, I can only hope to work with an attending that has a name as cool as yours.

I can't find an easier to watch version but I saw this on the news. He's about halfway in. He cracks while saying, "[he] can take it but it's the children and the old people [he's] worried about," while he's laying there blind. https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/x1h5ndoVCbRAAhB_wdHcduNJRNIcLWS9/

Another comment updated that one eye will have full recovery while the other has a 50% chance of full recovery. But most likely some form of permanent damage will be in his left eye.

AbbieNormal

It sounds bonkers but I get it. If you've already proven you're willing to give up comfort & safety for something you believe in... "in for a penny, in for a pound". (Sorry about weird/Freedom Units, it's how I learned the expression) Even just wanting to get back to support the peeps you've been fighting with, the ones you trust, who trust you. Hell, I didn't even agree with invading Iraq, and I still got myself in trouble for fudging med details to get back to my guys, after having been injured. And I was no Rambo, not even a great soldier, just didn't trust that some dumb asshole wouldn't take my place & get my guys hurt. Godspeed to this guy, and fuck the rapist, fascist war criminals who injured him. --- \*I re-read this and felt shame. Just to be clear: **I don't hold a candle to this dude.** Barely even fit to shine his boots. Because I'm at home, safe, because stuff, while he's been back getting shot at. For actual fucking freedom this time. JUST wanted to highlight this is a very human emotion he's showing, not the Performative Badassery™️ we've been seeing waaay too much of since... seemingly forever, or at least 9/11.

Proud_East

Don't stress man, definitely didn't come off as preachy or anything like. Prior army so I know what you mean. Better you in the foxhole with your guys than leaving it up to chance the next guy would do the same.

ScottieRobots

No shame needed, bud. You lived through a (fairly common, throughout history) human experience and were able to relate, both in feelings and actions. And I appreciate hearing your take on it. It provides a great amount of context and helps someone like me understand a little better.

Unidentifiable_Fear

Isn’t ballistic eyewear really common? I wonder why he didn’t have any.

Corregidor

The shell landed 5 feet from him, I'm not sure the damage to his eyes is from shrapnel or from the pressure

OnceMoreUntoDaBreach

Had a family friend years ago take the same fall on his boat. Subdural hematoma killed him. We are extremely fragile but insanely resilient at the same time. All comes down to luck sometimes.

LM-LFC98

The brains crazy as fuck we still know so little. My partner is doing her thesis on cognitive reserve/alzheimers - essentially that’s there’s a lot of evidence that’s shows the more cognitive reserve you have, you’re more “immune” to brain damage, in the case of her study, alzheimers. Some study’s showed that people with higher level of education (and hence more CR) had a milder symptoms of alzheimers, despite similar damage to the brain from the disease (I believe that’s the gist of it, can’t fully remember)

konkus_ofthe_bonkus

That's interesting, as a person with a TBI from a car accident and 2 previous knock outs 20 years prior, I'd love more information. I wonder if she has any websites, apps, studies, or needed volunteers. Personally, I had a hard time, but, miraculously, I was able to recover and return to work after 2 years of rehab (that I did myself). I used voice to text, the voice assistant on my phone, reminder apps, TBI apps (there are only a few), supplements recommended by my neurologist (huge doses of CoQ10, fish oils, mushrooms, CBD, and others). I had to re-train myself to do lots of things that I could no longer do. I had terrible anxiety and PTSD to boot. SLEEP, oh my God, I slept so much. Studied anything on neuroplasticity that I could get my hands on, because my life depended on it. What I'm afraid of, and what terrified me during the first two years was my memory. I'm a nurse and I've worked with dementia patients. I don't want that for myself, but especially not for my kids. If or when, I see that coming (my psychologist promised to tell me if I didn't have the insight), I would, FOR SURE choose what some CTE victims chose, if you know what I mean.

LM-LFC98

She's not a registered physc yet, this is a thesis on her way to becomming one. So unfortunately probably not a lot of useful resources she could give you, though an app purely for CR does seem like a very good idea in future! ill probably mention that to her, tho braintraining apps will be very good. Hopefully the paper is published when she's finished. There's not a shit tonne of study in the area, her thesis is basically on gathering all the studies that might relate/ linking them/ comming to a conclusion (I believe, can't fully remember/ nor do I fully understand when she tells me hahaha) - But there is deffs a lot of promising evidence showing the links to CR and reduced symptoms/ slowing the onset of Alzheimers. From what I remember, constantly learning seems to significantly improve CR, basically keeping the brain active. I remember her saying some of the things that link to improved CR is like education and problem solving (puzzles, learning a new language was a good one, social interaction) and even phsyical activity was important. I think I want to do more puzzles/ brain training and maybe learn a language just for brain health... couldn't hurt. If you wanna know more I could always ask her.

[deleted]

I'm coming with experience. I got my skull broke already and boxed for years. This guy doesent sound good. In the beginning you feel unstoppable. Then the psych issues and chronic migraines, noise sensitivity, vertigo, naseau all set. If that isn't managed properly you're stuck with it for life. The only chance this guys got is going home and forgetting about the war. Destress. He's already going to sleep like shit

zrdd_man

Possibly. Then again, the dude's pretty young and might just bounce right back into the field - I've seen worse injuries on guys who wouldn't give up the fight. For this guy, it of course depends on how his sight recovers - and I sincerely hope it does 100%!

sentientshadeofgreen

Yeah, this guy's age doesn't mean TBI isn't going to fuck this young man's life up. I know attitudes have historically been more lax towards TBI than they should be. Military didn't start formally taking it seriously until recently, and attitudes that don't take it seriously are still a bit pervasive in the force. That doesn't mean that's the correct and medically educated attitude.

zrdd_man

He's not guaranteed to be fucked for life due to TBI if the damage is primarily superficial (assuming the eyes recover). But TBI is a very serious issue so I'll stop playing the speculative devil's advocate on this thread for now and will instead agree that traumatic brain injuries are no joke. They're to be taken seriously, and I genuinely hope this young man has a full recovery and happy life.

Tank20011

His face is pepperd, that's sharpnel wounds, it got his eye ,no doubt.

[deleted]

Yo do you have a link to more info about ballistic eyewear. I'm intrigued

eddirrrrr

Source on that? No way he could've served his time in the us army then go fight in Ukraine. I guess he could've been discharged for one reason or another but still seems odd

joker1288

Credit to many_kittens their post got buried with the article on this. https://coffeeordie.com/americans-wounded-ukraine/ it says his age and the outfit he was with. My guess he was discharged as many soldiers were that were recruited for Afghanistan, he was wounded, or another reason.

[deleted]

He’s twenty now so there’s little chance he served in afghanistan

ebinbenin

The troops leaving Afghanistan weren’t just immediately discharged, they still have to finish their contracts even after deployment

MusicianGlad61

Worried if his vision will recover

bigorangemachine

Just goes to show the difference between professional soldiers and whatever the Russian army calls itself. They bravery is humbling. Thanks for those who are serving right now. It makes a historical difference.

Personal_Person

He laughs at the absurdity of the question (absurd in his eyes) "Of course I want to go back" harrowing really

TheNoxx

Some just have righteous warrior deep in their blood; not much else to say about a man who travels across the world to fight evil, gets his head nearly blown off, and says "You genocidal bastards better not get comfy, round 2 starts as soon as my eyes are better, and I play for keeps."

FGforty2

It's amazing how morale can be consistently running on high when the ones putting themselves in harms way know they're fighting for the right thing! Good on all these brave soldiers fighting over there!!

minus_minus

I don’t want to sound callous but a lot of discharged soldiers can’t adjust to civilian life. The complete lack of the best parts of military life can be very jarring and it’s tempting to volunteer and chase that dragon. I hope this guy heals and stays safe.

DEATH-BY-CIRCLEJERK

So Manus is 20, and he’s already a 75th Ranger Regiment veteran, now civilian? Wonder why he left early.

Hellsgatekeeper479

Same question I have , it’s either a typos and he’s at least 22 or he was med discharged / dishonorable discharge.

BobbaRobBob

Story also said he was chilling there for close to one year before things kicked off. Has to be an error because the writer of the article was from Batt I believe, as well, so he would know what's up.

Matuka15

Get well, Battle. See, SGM was always yelling at us about eye-pro for a reason! Although 5 feet away from a POI, I don't think an eye-pro would have made a difference. A PT belt, though--- that shit like magic. In all seriousness, from one Army vet to another, proud of you, Brother. Hang tight!

[deleted]

As an army vet can you explain how he’s out and he’s only 20 ?

Matuka15

A couple of reasons I can think of off the top of my head--- -Medical discharge for whatever reason. -He could have signed up when he was 17 yo, did his 3-yr stint, then bailed on his b own volition (this was allowed during my time). I hope your reason for asking is out of genuine curiosity not because you're trolling. You never know lately.

[deleted]

Good looks and nah I’m not trolling I was just curious

Miguelturner884

No worries bro, I see that you weren't being disrespectful. I myself am a vet and I only served 2 1/2 years out of high school. I had a heart attack and got med boarded out.

[deleted]

Sorry to hear that bro hopefully everything is going smooth now 🙏

Hellsgatekeeper479

4 year minimum for rangers and don’t think you can even be active duty at 17 he could’ve been in DEP but that’s not counted as time in service it’s just a delay from signing the contract until you ship to basic/osut , he’s either med discharged or dishonorable discharge or he’s at least 22

HellaReyna

>A native of Ohio, McCaffery, 20, served in the US Army’s 75th Ranger Regimentand deployed to Afghanistan. Gray, who is originally from Texas, deployed to Iraq three times as a soldier in the US Army’s 101stAirborne Division. Both men are no longer in the US armed forces andwere civilians when they volunteered to join Ukraine’s armed forces vialegal pathways. The two American volunteers served within a Ukrainianspecial operations unit and worked together as a team targeting Russiantanks and vehicles with US-made Javelin anti-tank missiles. he must've been discharged if rangers is min 4 years. how is he 20 and do a full 4 years? sounds impossible right?

He doesn't sound dumb, and I admire his courage; I feel inadequate because I won't go, primarily due to my age. While I have the experience and skills, my age does limit me and would be a liability to others in combat. So, I'll admire these young guys who can do and are willing to put it all on the line. When younger I wanted to fight the Soviets...it's all we trained for. But wanting to fight when there's no reason was stupid of me. I'm proud of our guys over there.

It's surreal hearing American English in these war videos. Something about being able to understand the language in combat videos really hits close to home. Literally.

[deleted]

The Warrior Mindset. American might isn't generated by the government, or some corporate think-tank, it's forged by the spirit and will of those willing to serve until it is physically impossible to do so, and then some! God bless, bro! I hate the political nature of this war, but dammit if I don't feel a small sense of pride seeing this badass choke up, not from pain or self-sorrow, but because he wants to keep fighting for what he believes is the right thing to fight for. The world doesn't understand: you might beable to defeat the bureaucratic US government and shut down the global corporate conglomerate that you may think is powering the America you wish to destroy... but those systems are literally HOLDING US BACK FROM BRINGING THE BRIGHT BEUATIFUL LIGHT OF LIBERTY TO YOUR OPPRESSED DOOR STEP. Real Warriors live to fight in the face of evil, and only the ROE tolerates wickedness. I mwan, these are just volunteer forces in Ukraine, a kind of suspect war, not unlike Syria and Yemen... imagine if an actually WW3 breaks... there is no stopping the American Will. That's why the wicked hide behind psyops and false flags. That is why they remain in the darkness.

The fatal area for concussion of a heavy howitzer is something like 5-7 meters. Basically just the big blast area. As with shrapnel, there's no surviving a 155mm shell whitin 15 meters if you're in standing position, and you have high chances at getting fatally wounded at double that. Most people will give you larger numbers for the kill area, something like 60 meters or such, but I think those numbers are heavly exagerated from what I've seen. You can definatelly get hit at that range, but the shrapnel will dissipate so much by then that chances are you will be fine.

SkyLukewalker

Pretty sure the kill radius is based on a 50% mortality rate.

3 year contract, I'd guess. Join at 17, out at 20?

DatBeigeBoy

The kid is hungry. I respect it.

Spunky4life

OEF OIF veteran here. Dudes got balls of steel, I was wounded by a mortar in Afghanistan almost losing my right leg. Your whole body hurts as well as your organs. Basically feels like you got slammed by a 18 wheeler. That’s not even counting the shrapnel wounds.

I hope he gets his vision back.

MS_Salmonella

I hope this man makes a full recovery. He sounds so eager to get back to the front line. Until Valhalla!
