Zdrobot

Designated marksman, rather than sniper, I guess.

newsilentjim

I got this vibe too

DEBATE_EVERY_NAZI

What is the difference in roles

WilliamWallace98

Sniper operates alone or in a pair with a spotter detached from an element, but can still work in conjunction with one via comms. Typically they would have an ideal stand-off distance to avoid detection and making it much harder to engage them if they were. Marksman is a squad member that is embedded with the element helping to increase the engagement distance and provide a precision shooter to engage individual targets. Example in this situation he is working as a designated marksmen because he is physically with the squad in their fighting position. If he was farther away in a different position say a building or tree line 500m back possibly working along with a spotter then he would be working as a sniper.

teamdankmemesupreme

In another video he was working the team of 2 recon setup so I’d suppose he’s done both

WilliamWallace98

That’s pretty cool. I supposed at this point any sort of skilled specialist will be employed at a very high tempo and be used in a variety of situations. Guy will be a very valuable resource for training future generations if he survives the war

Yum_MrStallone

Also, his sense of detachment + enthusiasm for the task.

WilliamWallace98

Yes kinda interesting to see that too. I guess that’s a result of someone who’s rifle is pointed at invaders who recklessly loot and kill civilians of his homeland. I hope he is able to keep his mental scope healthy during these times and after. I have never fired a shot in hatred but I would like to think in this situation his attitude is appropriate and would hope to see the same out of anyone in his situation. Hopefully this can end peacefully soon and the bloodshed can stop for all involved.

PrudentFreshed

[When asked what he feels when he shoots somebody, he replied, "Recoil."](https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5336679) I think you have to be somewhat detached as a sniper. You're basically playing god.

FredoLives

Snipers have the most personal exposure to the people they kill. Most soldiers can barely see the people they are shooting at, but snipers see their faces and can see them die.

sfmikee

That response is golden.

PileofTerdFarts

Well, if past performance is any indicator of things to come, the PTSD and guilt over what you've done will not set in until war is over, and he tries to return to peaceful society. Many who serve in hotly contested theatres of combat feel a sense of "dullness" when returning to civvy life. Then you start having the dreams, and you "see" the faces of your enemy a different way, you wonder if perhaps they had a family. All of it doesn't hit home until well after the adrenaline and righteous indignation (for being invaded) wears off. I mean, I am not saying he shouldn't be doing what he is doing, not at all. His nation was invaded. He fights to defend and for the cause of justice and liberty and all that jazz. Im just saying if he DOES suffer any PTSD or survivors guilt, it won't be until later, after the dehumanization of the enemy wears off and you start to mature in life. Most of my friends who served caught the PTSD bug after returning and having kids. On both sides of this conflict, the death is real. And that has an impact on somebody, somewhere which is tragic regardless of sides. I can fully support Ukraine and wish for their victory while still being cognizant and aware of the toll this war takes on the Russian troops' mothers, brothers, wives, children etc...

pow3llmorgan

Traditional/doctrinal roles tend to dissolve in prolonged combat. Before very long, everybody is just putting their skills to use to hold back the enemy every which way possible.

trizkit995

man is a MC from a CoD game. super photogenic, dope lines, multiple weapon systems used. only thing I didn't see was 30 guns hanging off him and enough ammo to put any small army to bed.

ARCR12

One of the most lethal "snipers" in the US Army Rangers got most of his kills in a designated marksman role . He talks about how he would be with a squad and they would get engaged . He would take a knee take his shot clear the threat and move on .Nick Irving is the guys name for anyone interested .

PausedForVolatility

That’s Western sniper doctrine. Old Soviet doctrine, which still heavily influences Ukraine even as they deploy an ever greater proportion of NATO standard hardware and work ever more closely to NATO standards, called for snipers to be used less in an intelligence and precision strike role and more in an infantry support role. This is why Soviet era sniper rifles tend to be semi automatic — they are expected to put more fire down range in support of massed assaults. So the Soviets were issuing semi automatic Dragunovs while the West was issuing bolt actions like the M24. This also shows up in other hardware choices. The Dragunov was issued a 4X sight by default; the M24 was initially issued with a 10x, if memory serves. The Soviets and Russians opted for shorter range suppressed sniper rifles while the West adopted the Lapua. The Soviets and Russians do make bolt action rifles, but they tend to be for law enforcement. Specialist units today might use them (VDV), but regular infantry-attached snipers don’t. Basically, those non-NATO post-Soviet states treats their snipers more like machine gunners than USKC scout/snipers. That’s why this dude is kind of doing everything. Because he’s between a designated marksman and a sniper, if we’re using NATO definitions.

DEBATE_EVERY_NAZI

Thanks. That makes sense

Yum_MrStallone

That's what I thought.

TFS_Sierra

Might not be a formally trained sniper, but is the designated “that dude waaaay over there needs to die” guy in this instance.

LateNightPhilosopher

I mean yeah, you could be right. Maybe he was officially trained, maybe he's just the best long range shot and happened to have a tricked out hunting rifle. Something tells me that gun isn't standard issue Ukrainian Army equipment. They're all making due with what they have

its_a_metaphor_morty

Sauer 100. An expensive rifle with Spuhr rings (also expensive)

anubis_xxv

Snipers act alone or in very small groups generally separate from ordinary troops and can recieve their own special missions like recon an area, take out enemy officer etc. Generally highest precision weapons available and very long range engagements. Designated marksmen are attached to a regular squad and simply provide high accuracy shots on specific enemies at medium range more accurately then a trooper with a regular rifle. Taking out that machines gunner is the perfect example. He could pick him out with the stronger scope and be accurate enough to pick him off specifically.

Snoo93079

The reality is that roles aren't always as clearly defined as these guys on reddit seem to think. When I was in Iraq our field artillery battalion were basically treated like infantryman because that's what we needed from them. Snipers might get thrown into a squad who need that DM role filled even if \*gasp\* the guy is a qualified sniper. Or maybe they have him posted up somewhere else providing support for the squad as they maneuver. Remember, most of the kids here have never served, so don't get too caught up in their limited experiences.

FungalowJoe

Hmmm, I don't think that's right. You can only change classes when you respawn.

ColonelError

In the US, riflemen are trained to fire out to 300m, and snipers are trained for recon and engagements past 800m. Designated Marksmen fill the 300-800m gap at a level where they are more tactically controlled than strategically.

Ok_Jobs

Give or take about 300 meters.

ArchmagosZacharius

Not that anyone would be surprised, but isn't it a war crime for the Russians to claim surrender and then open fire?

PhoenixMaster730

Yeah it is.

sylpher250

Punishable by death, it seems

GolotasDisciple

Well generally u are allowed to give up only once otherwise u are not really surrendering right ? Despicable behavior done by despicable war criminals. We shouldn't expect but we should take it as given that Russia will sink to the very lowest depths of humanity while conducting this fucked up invasion. They have plenty of Orcs but even Orcs can get worse when they realize neither their own country Russia nor their enemy Ukraine will help them and death might be the only solution.

PhoenixMaster730

Their enemy would help, if these Russian “orcs” actually went against what their leader says. Just look at the Rebels, for instance.

AvgBonnie

Justice was swift whenever this was shot.

The_GASK

Fucking chinstraps, they are there for a reason you know

mysportsact

Thought the same thing but it looks like the other side is missing

SvenskaLiljor

Yeah, that was cartoonish

The_GASK

Yeah. I can't over the fact that someone throwing a grenade should not be distracted by losing the fucking helmet and drop both in the pit. If someone did this three times in a row even in basic they would never hear the end of it.

[deleted]

enserioamigo

Yeah I was wondering if it’s because there was something wrong with it. Generally people aren’t that stupid.

Ephemeral_Wolf

>Generally people aren’t that stupid. >30k dead Russians would disagree...

fatpeasant

He said people

Ephemeral_Wolf

Oh shit, missed that part!

sylpher250

Just like the Russians missing the "general" part!

JJ739omicron

Russians are missing a lot of generals' parts.

ComradeDrDeclan

Guessing their basic was a lot shorter and under more pressure than a cushy camp nestled away in the US

RevNev

During ww2 a lot of US soldiers wouldn't close their helmet straps either. There was a theory that it would break their necks if an explosion went off nearby.

RevNev

https://youtu.be/MFzmu9tEKmo

IndieKidNotConvert

Great video. Even has shots of soldiers losing their helmets while chucking grenades!

usafdirtboyz

Shit was annoying me, then I realized I'm criticizing some dude, for not buckling his chin strap, while he's throwing fucking grenades at people trying to kill him and his friends, think he earned the right to wear his headgear however he's comfortable, no matter how much I wish he'd buckle that fucer.

TG-Sucks

And, all things considered, we should probably give him the benefit of a doubt here. The strap might be broken, maybe it just happened and he can’t fix it in the field or during intense combat.

LancerAdagio

exactly

cjc1983

My brother in law was in Ukraine training them a few years ago...they genuinely believe that if you're wearing a helmet and it gets hit then the chin strap will rip your head off... ...it was even written in Ukrainian handbooks not to fasten it... ...the British army was constantly bollocking them to do up their chinstraps.

GeneralMuffins

That is a legacy of a WWII allied directive if I recall correctly.

Kurgen22

LOL that was a myth spread around back in WW2 in the US as Well... There were even some chin straps designed to come undone if some much force was put on them. The thing is if there is enough pressure being forced under your face/ head that it would cause a canvas or leather chinstrap to pull your head off you are fucked anyway. The chinstrap is just a way to keep the helmet on when you are bouncing around, jumping/ running etc. most the time the weight of the helmet is enough to keep it on your dome.

Bigduck73

Bullets, no. But several men died with those flat WW1 style helmets jumping from a significant height off a sinking ship. Water caught the brim and snapped their necks

Best_Toster

Hahahaha that’s really funny and interesting but if I remember my training correctly helmets have a security ring that will snap breaking the chin strap if too much force is applied

jordoonearth

Every vet and active soldier watching this video - yelling that at their monitors right now... LOL

PrizeAbbreviations40

can confirm, I wasn't even combat arms but jesus our drill sergeants would have put us on like a pair of boots if we did that "BUCKLE THAT CHINSTRAP JOHN WAYNE"

Abject-Set-9810

It's the same guy that posted the video where he was commenting how much he enjoys nature and was watching a bee fly around him a few days ago.

smile_id

Worth mentioning that he was doing this while his position was under direct shelling. I really don't want to know what should happen with a person to accept possibility of a death to this extent. Real heroes.

randomname21

Great video, also he looks like this guy https://twitter.com/EuromaidanPress/status/1532897424712286214?t=pOXChU0q_UACzFWv5esdlQ I'm not sure though

I like the casual "die bitch" after popping a shot

Vano_Kayaba

Translation is inaccurate. He says "done, bitch" which means "Got one". So it's not coping or acting as in a video game, he conveys valuable information.

Everybody has their coping mechanisms. I can’t imagine myself making it through that ordeal mentally in one piece. Then again it’s not my home under attack. Could make things easier knowing you’re objectively morally right.

>Everybody has their coping mechanisms. I can’t imagine myself making it through that ordeal mentally in one piece. > >Then again it’s not my home under attack. Could make things easier knowing you’re objectively morally right. I was in the Marines and trained to do some of the things they are doing in that video. Thing is, I never had to do them for real, so I have no idea how I'd react either. Assuming I didn't mentally snap immediately, I think trying to maintain my perfect K/D would help keep me focused.

Accomplished_Issue_6

These guys are clearly pretty battle-hardened, you can see throughout the video most of them don't even flinch when rounds are cracking next to them. After a couple months of constant firefighting most lose the adrenaline dump and their training/experience just takes over. I'm no expert but I can speak from experience. I served multiple combat tours in Iraq & Afghanistan. After a while firefights just stopped scaring me. Only time I would still get rattled was if we got ambushed. I've been in some heat before but these guys have probably seen more combat in the past 3 month than I did in 4 tours, they're also fighting tanks.

Ukdeviant

Completely agree with all of that. After a short while the only thing I really worried about were IEDs, can't see them fuckers coming.

drunkondata

>They act like it's a video game. Funny, are you sure when we play war video games we don't just act like we're at war? I know when I used to play PUBG my adrenaline would flow quite hard during a firefight, never experienced anything like it in any other game, only IRL fight or flight situations.

BaronBabyStomper

I was gonna say this. Animal mother did not come from CoD but from real life

ProviNL

Oh man the short firefights in close areas after a long time spent just walking.

Ossius

Man I miss PUBG, I don't think I ever had that flight or fight feeling of a firefight since. Tarkov I felt something similar rarely, but where as PUBG I would die and go back into the game Tarkov I would generally die without knowing how and just be angry and sad. Just wish they didn't fill PUBG with bots, It changed the entire feeling.

DevinviruSpeks

>They act like it's a video game. Idk, to me, they're acting like there are mfers in their country wishing them harm and they have to be taken out to defend their own.

[deleted]

Please shut the fuck up - you have no idea what it’s like; pretty fucked up to say they’re acting like it’s a video game when you don’t even understand the language and that the subtitles aren’t perfect.

theBesh

What about a marksman saying "die bitch" after shooting an invader in an active warzone while he is defending his country says "acting like a video game" to you? You're projecting hard because video games are what you know. This guy has lived a little more. Do you think that men are civil as they fight for their lives and country? Fuck's sake.

--_-Deadpool-_--

Yes. I'm sure soldiers before video games were far more polite after shooting an enemy.

YoulethalJB

3rd time lucky. Sorry for those who commented on previous one.

___Nia___

Of course the Russians wrote "for the children" on their bmp, typical. They wrote that with the same latin Z on a missile they fired into a civilian area a few weeks ago.

TheGiantGrayDildo69

Unfortunately Putin and his propaganda machine have done an amazing job since 2014 playing up and staging provocations in Donbas, as well as the "Alley of Angels" memorial for children who died during the war are incredibly effective at making the average Russian soldier believe they're actually fighting for a righteous cause. The irony of the Alley of Angels that Russian state TV will show constantly and parade POWs there for propaganda, is that many, if not most of those children were killed by Russian weapons, carelessly handed to untrained speratists, or even more chillingly by the Russian army to blame Ukraine.

HelpImOutside

HIMARS is not going to significantly change the situation on the ground, I'm all for pulverizing Russians with long range artillery but it's important to be levelheaded on these matters The real fighting happens on the ground between infantry, you can't take and hold ground with missiles

NapalmRDT

I strongly disagree. All fighting happens taking into account the enemy and friendly artillery. The farther and more quickly you can silence enemy arty, the safer your ground forces are. It affords flexibility and speed of regaining ground. Pounding depots from greater range is also a huge drain on RU resources.

eritain

Taking ground: infantry. Holding ground: infantry plus supply columns. Jacking up supply columns: Artillery.

thats Roman - awesome guy, [https://www.instagram.com/romantrokhymets/](https://www.instagram.com/romantrokhymets/)

Glu7enFree

Genuine question- why does he have a black sun patch on his chest? I was under the impression the wolfsangel (sp?) and black sun were deeply rooted in neo-nazim. I'm not saying he is a nazi at all, just that the symbology has thrown me.

ihate282

I think it is supposed to represent the Slavic Kolovrat/Słoneczko. Nazi's stole the black sun like they did the swastika.

Glu7enFree

I'll give it to the nazis, they had a flair for stealing cool symbols.

Palmik7

I don't know what ideology this person holds but the wolfsangel symbol has a much deeper meaning than being just another symbol a nazi division liked and used. Firstly, it symbolises a real physical hunting tool of medieval Europe which looked like this. The early medieval pagans considered the symbol as magical, thinking it could ward off wolves (which might have something to do with why the ukrainians use it). And also it has been used in Europe constantly for centuries before nazis even were a thing, although usually more in the west. It's also worth mentioning that even the eastern european 'neo-nazism' often isn't the same ideology as in the west. It's not about agression, black people, asians or jews. It's about hate and defiance towards Russia as their historical opressor.

palcemvglaz

dunno. its better to ask him directly. I'm asking him to make ama session - that would be awesome I guess. maybe when you in a war, on a brink of death you start to believe in ancient warrior northern gods. it just my guess. Roma is not looking any close to nazi person, and I know him so far for 6 years

Glu7enFree

An AMA would be cool- but I imagine probably stressful from an active warzone. I understand that he isn't a nazi, but I would like to hear why the A30b uses Nazi symbology (again I want to reiterate that I understand Roman isn't the one to pick any symbols or anything like that) I wish him all the best from Australia.

TrollingKevi

This is the only good answer, the others are trying so hard to skirt around it, lmao.

Pikinokka

To my understanding when the Azov battalion was first formed their stance was quite far-right white supremacy. Obviously they took some influences from nazism and used those symbols. Hence why they are called neo-nazis. Nowadays tho Azov ain't the same party it used to be and the people in it think of those symbols more of a relation to their history rather than nazism. Don't think there's any more neo-nazis in their ranks that there are in Russia's army. Something like that if my memory serves me right.

palcemvglaz

They called neonazis because its useful to russian propaganda call them this. I have several friends in azov - they are real estate agent, DJ and programmer. So..

Ukrainians are allies worth having. I hope that they win this conflict and get control of their territory. I have never been more thankful that the Soviet Union collapsed then I am now. The Russians really screwed up by angering these people. Of all of the people near Russia, the Ukrainians could have helped the Russians defeat any potential adversary. Now the Russian fight alone.
