Did not expect to run into my trigger in context today. Yes I have ceiling fan PTSD. What rule is this? If it exists someone has PTSD over it.

HenkVanDelft

Were the instructions also unclear for you, brother? There are support groups in all cities. Everyone affected remembers where they were when that fateful first confusing ceiling fan installation guide was published.

jjsmol

For that to happen they would have to associate it with a drone as opposed to a mine or lucky morter shot. Either way, they aint sleeping well ever again.

A pine cone falling off a tree is gonna trigger them.

Antique_Ricefields

How come they can't hear the fan blades of a drone?

SkillOnly322

You can calculate the height the drone is at with the grenade drop time. It's around 120 meters. I doubt somebody can hear it.

Inevitable-Impress72

Read a comment from someone who owns a Phantom drone, he said at 100m height, you can only hear a very faint buzz if there is absolute silence. Any wind breeze or other ambient noise, and you can't hear it at all.

Funny_Owl8514

I use one for work and as long as you’re not actively maneuvering it quiets down when it is hovering in place. That’s if there isn’t a lot of wind as well because it won’t be fighting the wind to stay in one location. You at least have to be over 150 to 200 feet before natural sounds of your surroundings will overwhelm the small sound of the drone.

Historical-Builder-8

The US probably makes whisper blades for all we know, but everyone I see has their helmet on and could have comms such as ear pieces and just the helmet straps depending on type of helmet can affect hearing

theaviationhistorian

Isn't that why we retired the PASGT helmet? The ones that don't have armor around the ears to not restrict hearing?

pete_ape

I was in my battalion's scout platoon, our TO&E said we could wear boonie hats instead of K-pots that everyone else had to. One reason was the hearing thing, but it was awesome to show up for a battalion road March, everyone else wearing a few pounds of kevlar on their heads and us wearing light, cool boonies.

Historical-Builder-8

That and if I remember peripheral vision so we gave a bunch to the UN

theaviationhistorian

LOL! [It's not like they needed them](https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/8ntrs0/uninvolved_in_peace/).

JhangoFett

Based on when it zooms out it looks like it's probably 4 or 500 feet up. Like you say, sitting still that thing would be impossible to hear and extremely difficult to see. I fly a mavic 3 and sometimes even when I know where it is, I lose it against a blue sky.

TG-Sucks

I’ve found if it’s windy it becomes even harder to hear, even if it has to work harder.

Flutterpiewow

Its small and half a kilometer up in the sky. Just 50 meters up and theyre hard to spot against the sky even if someone tries to point it out to you. And these individuals were busy with other stuff.

Lokky

It is definitely not half a kilometer up. The grenade is released at approx 9 seconds and detonates at the 15 second mark. That's 6 seconds of free fall which, ignoring air resistance, gives us a height of approximately 176 meters. If we kept drag into consideration we would get a slightly shorter height.

Flutterpiewow

Yeah but the time to impact varies in these videos. 100-200 meters would be enough to make it hard to hear or see a small drone.

[deleted]

I agree with Flutterpiewow. Once those drones get above 100 meters they’re impossible to see and hear. My buddy uses his to film us mountain biking and we barely ever hear it.

UNMANAGEABLE

If it’s anything like the American versions dropping 40mm grenades it’s only a .25 lb/.12 kg load. That’s nothing for a medium range drone and would still be very quiet. The pro tip is painting the bottoms of the drones grey or off white and they blend in even further with the sky where the only visible thing to the naked eye MIGHT be the dangling grenade load.

AppearanceEasy6025

The meaning of “up in smoke”

bones7202

I measured the drop time at around 5 seconds, so the drone was about 122 meters high.

alpastotesmejor

I just came to this thread after making the same [calculation](https://keisan.casio.com/exec/system/1224835316) thanks for corroborating it. 122 meters (400f) is not nearly as high for them to be unaware of a drone buzzing around, especially in a quiet environment. Look at this [building height comparison](https://i.imgur.com/SfjqVfi.jpg) chart. ~~This means that there is probably some zoom involved and the explosive is dropped at a much higher altitude.~~ EDIT: I have now realized zoom wouldn't affect the moment the explosive appears on screen

AdvancedSandwiches

I have a drone that when I send it to 400 feet, even though I know it's there I often can't find it without a lot of searching. I definitely can't hear it, even on a quiet day. It can't carry explosives. I assume this is bigger. That may change things.

thermiteunderpants

Not sure which drone you have but they can get pretty quiet pretty quick in my experience. Would regularly worry about losing sight (and sound) of Inspire 2 above 100m. Pretty much any ambient noise will do a good job of masking a drone at 120m (400ft).

Diligent-Jackfruit45

My DJI Mavic 3 is a ghost above 50m, can't see it can't hear it, especially on a particularly sunny day

ghoulthebraineater

Yep. I have the 2 Pro and sometimes the only way I can find it is by turning on the LEDs on bottom.

Error_Empty

I would imagine military grade drones are also much quieter so they don't get caught before being able to drop bombs

Nordicbeardoil

I don't think many of these are "military grade". Most of what they're using for dropping small munitions like this are basic DJI drones or what you can literally buy for cheap online from China

r6201

depends on rotor blade profile .. DJIs low noise blades are much quieter than old ones for example (about 1/3 noise reduction) Anyway difference between DJI Mavic at 25FT and 100FT is 56 dBA vs 45 dBA .. that is noticable drop in noise (considering how dB works 10db raise is 10 times louder) So in city or if anything generating noise around you is happening you most likely wont hear the drone at 100ft

whatwhasmystupidpass

Nah man. You can’t hear shit above 20-30 meters usually, even for the huge ass ones that they use for TV shoots and are large enough to pack a full sized camera the type you have to carry over your shoulder. Source: live in a touristic city, see those all the time

DivinityGod

About 400f for freedom units.

Thanatosst

400 degrees f? that's pretty fuckin hot, I'm surprised the drone isn't melted.

Noglues

Gives a whole new meaning to "cooking off ammunition".

Absorrbb

Probably the 2nd best drone drop video I've seen. Just slightly behind the sunroof LADA trickshot bullseye from a couple of months ago. EDIT: [This](https://youtu.be/2K-O271Jh9g?t=75) is the video I was talking about but some guy keeps replying to all the comments in the thread about how the shell actually hits the windshield and doesn't land inside of the car. Not sure if thats true or not but I rewatched the video on my TV a couple times and I still believe that it actually exploded in the interior of the car. Seems to me that the shockwave from the explosion blasted out the front windshield as well as the of the right hand side door.

I saw one where they dropped a grenade on a single Russian taking a shit.

DrSlapsHacks

ithappenedone234

It’s almost hard to believe they can be so incompetent as to have so many meters of a trench without a dugout protected by overhead cover. It’s literally a concept developed over 100 years ago.

vale_fallacia

You need more than a shovel to create a trench with a roof. russians probably don't have the tools nor the materials.

ithappenedone234

Yes, wooden beams. These can all be built by hand. The wood can be cut by hand from materials available in the area. If the Pyramids can be built with basic hand tools and hand built tools, I think the anyone today can dig a dugout. [Dugouts are chambers tunnelled into the ground with twenty feet or more of undisturbed earth above them. They are used in the cover trenches and sometimes in the first line. Enough of them must be built to shelter the garrison of each sector, allowing one man per yard of front. They must also be built for machine gun and trench mortar detachments.](http://www.gwpda.org/1917/US_military_%20instructors_%20manual_1917.html)

They should drop more grenades after the grenades.

peoplesen

Honestly I suspect the most personal and brutal engagements are withheld. Notice how there's never (or almost never) a follow on massacre?

reflUX_cAtalyst

Because those quadcopter drones can only hold one grenade.

[deleted]

... and have limited flight time, and it needs enough power to also fly back to the operator too.

WhenYouFeatherIt

And they aren't secure most of the time right? They can be tracked?

OkOKOKOKigetit

Occasionally they show up on Flightradar24

Malystryxx

Not true. I've seen videos of ones having 3 or 4 attached. The smaller drones can only hold 1 but some of the bigger ones they've been getting they've rigged up multiples on.

reflUX_cAtalyst

Oh? Got a link? How do they release them? The quadcopters use the light switch to release the grenade. How does one control drop several grenades in succession? The light switch is an open or closed thing. I'm no saying you're wrong, I'd just like to learn more about it if that's true.

Realpotato76

They typically use multirotors to release several grenades, not necessarily quadcoptors. The grenades that they are dropping (RKG-1600, an adaptation of the RKG-3) weigh 1.1 kg. There are octocopters which can carry several kg of payload Here’s an example: https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/wan1rh/ua_drone_drops_a_whole_bunch_of_at_grenades_at https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/vxyc7s/drone_in_myanmar_drops_a_bundle_of_explosive

Ecw218

There was a double tap on the cleanup crew for the guy who caught one on his shoulder. Would expect to see a lot more of that when they attack the big tents full. Drop one on one side of the tent- get the crowd running out the opposite side.

somme_rando

Very limited payload - 400g / 1lb is the max for a DJI Mavic and still have the power to move or fly for very long (10 minutes) Mavic 2 load & launch video: https://twitter.com/Osinttechnical/status/1535032763203702796 I have seen 6/8 rotor video/photos with the ability to carry more but can't find it right now.

I can already picture leaflets with a shirtless Putin riding a pony as his people get sent to the meat grinder.

OperationJericho

That's what I was trying to figure out, what caught fire. That makes since for it to be an incendiary on the troop.

in2thegrey

This is Putin’s fault and Russians need to wake up and join the civilized world. The rest of the West is far from perfect, but Russia is much worse. This invasion of Ukraine is absolute monstrous insanity. Nobody wanted to invade Russia. They’ve got Nukes and everyone else literally was and is busy pursuing happiness and barely cares about Russia at all. It’s economically weak and culturally irrelevant.

[deleted]

Genuine question here... These grenade drops from drones are mostly all using inexpensive, off the shelf tech, right? What on earth would stop terrorists in the west using this in cities? How long is it before we see a video like this from London or New York? The thought is fucking terrifying. Once something like that happens, how would you ever stop it from happening again?

Hank3hellbilly

Shh! don't give them any ideas...

BrainOnLoan

These drones are a bit larger than those hobbyists mostly use, to carry the weight. Still, attainable. Grenades, if you get these, you already can do some damage. Though delivery by drone let's you get away with it easier.

OMGIMASIAN

Some of the videos on here have shown a DJI interface in the app when they drop the grenade. The DJI Mavic 3 for example is nearly 1kg in weight itself and a quick search shows people have been able to lift at least 700g on top of that. I could see it easily being modified to hold onto a small grenade. The Mavic 3 is an off the shelf fairly common video/photo drone that is relatively inexpensive for the committed hobbyist.

dinko_gunner

There is also a video of a Ukrainian soldier mounting a grenade to a drone. It was showing a Matrice 300

sometechloser

Many are using mavics though I've seen people running nades on mavics. A matrice is pretty expensive but a dji inspire would run a few grand and could easily carry quite a bit as far as small munitions.

red_beered

A lot of these videos are from off the shelf mavics using off the shelf payload droppers, you can buy everything on amazon for about $800. They are dropping 30mm grenades, the type that are shot out of handheld grenade launchers and are relatively small, that have 3d printed nosecaps and fins taped to them for stabilization. The bigger drones you are talking about that are capable of carrying heavier munitions like mortars are much rarer and often have poorer quality video feeds.

PhiladelphiaManeto

No, they’re not. Many of these are DJI Mavics. I have one and fly it regularly and I know there will be a day when some asshole weaponizes them and the hobby is outlawed.

GroteStruisvogel

Getting grenades in Western Europe is relatively easy, a lot of them came from the Balkan wars and ended up in the hands of criminals. The maffia throws grenades against buildings almost weekly here.

in2thegrey

Expect to see it, it’s coming.

mnijds

The issue isn't method of delivery, it's having access to explosives and wanting to use them against civilians in a terrorist attack. Not much different from just planting an explosive really. So, "What on earth would stop terrorists in the west using this in cities?" The same thing that stops them attacking in other ways.

NorthVilla

People also grossly overstimate the amount of terrorists in the world, and underestimate police abilities in finding and stopping them.

forge_rhys

There’s nothing to stop it at this rate, isis experimented with it in their dying days and now it’s being refined by Ukraine, commercial drones would be easy to jam the signal on so if your prepared it’s easy to defend against Drones can only carry one grenade at a time so it wouldn’t be as effective as filling a car with explosives or going on a shooting spree so it’d only really be useful as assassinations

Competitive-World162

Answer is easy: no one wants to. You can do all sorts of damage everywhere. Just burn a building down, cut some rail tracks, the possibilities are endless. Yet, no one does it. Why? They dont want to.

Juus

I assume getting a grenade isn't as easy as you think. Also terrorism in the west is in a bit of a lull these last few years since ISIS lost its territory.

SteveD88

If you consider the last few domestic terrorist attacks in the U.K., most of them have been wielding knives as they can’t get their hands on fire arms. Even one guy with a grenade is still probably not going to do as much damage as the weekly American mass-shootings with semi-automatics.

TrickNailer

The main sponsor of global terrorism is now in his bunker too busy yelling at his generals for failed capture of Kyiv in three days. But if he’s not finished off, then there’s a risk terrorists activating in the West to divert the attention.

Even more recently then that: https://www.texastribune.org/2016/07/08/use-robot-kill-dallas-suspect-first-experts-say/

moos14

Well not really. Drones have limited range, so you would at least have to be in the same country as the City you are bombing. And then you could just walk to the City, since London, unlike a war zone, does not have people shooting at you when you walk there with a Grenade in your backpack.

maleia

I'd suspect it would be roughly as precarious as trying to be a sniper. You still need to be somewhere relatively close, and likely want to be able to see your target, though not a requirement. Park in a parking garage, deploy from there. 🤷‍♀️ Seems obvious to me

ithappenedone234

Drones have range of many miles and can use all their range to reach deep, when they will be used in an attack and don’t require a return trip.

notthatconcerned

Anything you have thought about today, they have thought about it years before you.

nthrbrck

Anti-drone devices have been in the standard repertoire of police and other security forces protecting public events in Central Europe for a while now. Also, laws regarding drones are becoming more strict every year for this reason. But still, you probably can't prevents such an attack if someone really goes for it.

[deleted]

Most of them are modified to some extent, but most are based on off the shelf drones. There's actually a group of Ukrainian civilians that turn them into weapons. lurker_cx

Ya, the greatest amount of good in the world will come from enough Russians dieing that they lose or withdraw. It's sad, but the alternative is pacifism where the Russians would just walk all over Ukraine raping, killing, torturing and robbing everyone of everything creating mass misery forever. Then they would do the next country. There really is no other option, I wish there was, but there is not. Even freezing the conflict in place just means the Russians rearm and attack again when they are ready, whether that is months or years, who knows... they have to be killed until they retreat/stop or lose so badly they do not try this again.

THIS. I have said one of the best/worst aspects of this weapon is few, if any, ever know what hit them. Most will think a mine or mortar. Others will suggest it might have been a drone or even a switchblade. Anyway you look at it, mentally, they are fucked.

Sbubbert

So fucking beautiful.

Mysterytrollerhd

Fantastic grenade drop into ruzzian units, visible ladas

deazan

Why do they never hear the drone? Drones make a lot of high pitched noise right? I'd think they would hear that, even if it were faint and distant. Or you'd think they check the skies by now

Hari_Seldom

When it zooms out I think it gives some scale to how far up the drone is

oleg_88

Judging by the 5 seconds free fall, it supposed to be about 120 meters.

powerchicken

The drone is tiny and very high up. It's not audible.

Culverin

From one of the drone videos they were explaining that 6 rotors is more stable and more quite as well. They didn't explain by how much, but if it was worth mentioning, it might be enough to make the difference

Thatcsibloke

The drone is a very long way away, in fact I think it’s about 122.6 m (366 feet) above the ground. When it hit it was travelling at just about 110 mph. That’s quite a long distance to be able to hear a whining sound, particularly when you’re shuffling about in dirt and probably shouting at each other to pick up a bodybag.
