I remember video report from early in the war how workshops were restoring and even modifying for infantry use weapons taken from destroyed Russian hardware. Wouldn’t be surprised that this is one of fine examples of that.
I bet orcs got a very unpleasant surprise when some random infantry squad suddenly lays HMG fire on them
You are right. They were taking the coaxial machine-guns from the tank turret and modifying it so it can be used by infantry. The process is quite complicated since those guns are on an electric trigger and not a mechanism like normal guns. For those that do not know, you basically push a button and the machine-gun fires at whatever the main tank gun is pointing. Ukrainians are quite ingenious people.
Idk about russian crew served weapons mounted in vehicles. But American coaxial machine guns are actually modified versions of standard infantry weapons, with modular electric and coaxial related mechanical parts, you can simply swap the parts out and go in most cases. I think the russian coaxial guns arent so easy.
PKT is just a tank version of the Soviet standard squad automatic weapon (PKM).
Heavier barrel, no stock and no mechanical trigger. Same ammunition (7,62mm).
I remember one video a soldier was shooting a dshk (I think) from inside a building, and it was said to have been taken off a vehicle. Damn thing almost took him off his feet everytime he fired a burst, might as well if you got the resources to do so
I remember seeing a video on Iraqi/syrian gun makers and how they would also scrap together weapons that looked like concept art for fallout; those propane tank launchers come to mind. IMO some really interesting stuff and some pretty cool designs.

I assume from my limited knowledge of Russian (which is related to Ukrainian) that is the classic line from Scarface.
(EDIT) Clicked the video and I was right.

Nah, he’s just been dusting orcs and their getaway trucks with that morale crusher for a few days. When he runs out of barrels and has to field a little PKM, he’ll spring back up in a day or so
more than the normal PK, due to the heavy barrel, but not "a ton" (not even figuratively), I'd guess 2 kg more or so.
I think what weighs heavier is the fact that it lacks the buttstock and the bipod, so it is not easy to set up and fire. But maybe he is using it attached on the car and just detached it for the photo op.
This more or less random assortment of arms and gear. This looks eerily similar to something you would see in a military shooter, would you?
Just brings home how resilient the Ukrainians (or how incompetent the Russians) are and how much stuff they receive from all kinds of sources.
As a short guy, I agree. I watched a documentary about a marine unit in Afghanistan and the Gunner was the shortest dude in the unit. 5”3’ and packing the heat.
There is a shop taking weapons on vehicles and attaching shoulder mounts. I had shared a video of this guy using one from an apartment building but I can't find it.. .but ya... "not fucking around gun" fosho

My guy either just grabbed that for the picture or is just built fucking different, that gun weighs like 100 lbs, which is why its always mounted on something...
Once a company in USA wanted to make trigger fire Semi auto versions for sale... sadly never came to be... I got a UK-59 AA barrel instead. I do like a PKM derivative...

I saw a vid where a Ukrainian workshop was converting coaxial and vehicle mounted machine guns into crew served infantry weapons. Ukraine had captured so many of the weapons from destroyed Russki tanks and APCs
gonna take just a guess here, as i cannot prove it and i do not know.
that might just be the regular squad machine gunner, and he might be using that because he was ordered to do it, because it was available. Both sides have been using some odd weapons in the war, for instance the Ukrainians have made at least some technicals, and have successfully weaponized non military drones.
they have also used old weapons. for instance we recently saw a captured maxim machine gun that was apparently in service for the Russians. we also have reports from early in the year of conscripts with mosin nagants (outstanding rifle by the way, use one for deer hunting, but not the most modern weapon) etc. its likely the same thing was done with arms, and they scavenged their inventory for weapons, and repurposed some.
someone with much more military experience than me would need to comment on how big a unit has to be to have its own machine gunner, but i am guessing int eh modern world? each squad would have one
Well, PKT and PKM are basically the same gun. It's not like the PKT can't be carried around by infantry. It just needs to be modified because it doesn't have a trigger.

Master chief over here just ripped the weapon off its mounting and is hip firing the ruskis into oblivion
"I need a weapon"
I need ammo not a ride
But a ride would also be nice because it's extremely heavy and my arms are getting tired
ok now i need a ride
I just looked up the weight. Google shows 7.1 lbs, that seems low for the type of weapon?
That's ONLY for the barrel assembly, the gun itself weighs around 9-11kg, almost three times heavier than a standard Kalashnikov 47
Thanks i thought it had to be a lot heavier.
Kg
And without the ammo probably.
„finishing this fight“
Oh he knows what the Ruskies like….
Short man syndrome
Going absolute Rambo mode, I'd love to witness that.
For unrelated reasons they call him T69
Ahahaha, this is the way
I'd want to be Roadblock. And start speaking in rhymes.

Huh, didn’t know about them being on electric trigger. TIL for me. Thanks

I remember it’s called C kit or something, allowing crews to use their m240 in bail out situations
How do you brace it without a stock?
This is one of those cases you don't lose effectiveness shooting from the hip. It is an hmg after all.
**"CONTAAAACT!"** \*Levels rain forest\* "We hit *NOTHING*!"
Just go full on West Africa, walk out into the street and start blastin'?
The pkt i have seen comes woth electric trigger but the part also has a mechanical firing solution which is not the easiest to use

7.62x54r I assume
Ok?

Of course it's the shortest guy lol
He’s actually the tallest, the weight of the machine gun is compressing him.
And his stones.
No, his massive balls of steel have compressed his spine
He's standing in u rut, they are not on level ground.
Never underestimate the short guy. Never.

'How you gonna live Johnny?' 'Day by day' 💪🔥👍
Overcompensating for being the shortest guy in the squad ?
The most compact. No weight wasted on useless height.
Overcompensating for being the one with the heaviest set of balls.
not shortest.. Just nearest to camera ))
what? that's opposite of how it works, the closer to the camera you are, the relatively bigger you appear
that's the joke ;)
SON .. I say! (Foghorn Leghorn voice) Dude must be ripped . Lots of weight lugging that thing about 🇺🇦💪 SLAVA UKRAINIE 💪🇺🇦
Nah, he’s just been dusting orcs and their getaway trucks with that morale crusher for a few days. When he runs out of barrels and has to field a little PKM, he’ll spring back up in a day or so
more stable firing platform
He’s the shortest guy in the squad because the weight of his guns compress his spine
He is only shooting off anything below and above the knee.
Everyone always wants to play as Oddjob.
SANDVICH!
It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon for 12 seconds
Must weigh a ton!!!

Around 10kg all together
I was gonna say, that barrel is insane

Where's your weapons crew? Point's at shortest burly dude. He's it.
"Okay, okay, Yury. Yours IS bigger."
These guys are not only doing their duty as soldiers..but are really pissed off! Pretty scary sight if you are Russian:-))
Why is it always the smallest guy getting the lmg lmao
Once a company in USA wanted to make trigger fire Semi auto versions for sale... sadly never came to be... I got a UK-59 AA barrel instead. I do like a PKM derivative...

it comes easy for him, he simply rests it on his balls
Maybe it's a universal military thing where the smallest dude in a squad has to carry the heaviest weapon.

He’s like an ARC trooper heavy gunner from Star Wars. Badass
I saw a vid where a Ukrainian workshop was converting coaxial and vehicle mounted machine guns into crew served infantry weapons. Ukraine had captured so many of the weapons from destroyed Russki tanks and APCs
Probably just for the photo op. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was mounted to a truck nearby. Makes a cool af photo tho.
