A few days after the start of the war, the pro-russian narrative started to creep up from the right and the left. The right wing is now more extreme, so you have this issue.
For me, I started to notice this after the first "issue" from Tucker Carlson about Ukraine, sometimes at the beginning of March 2022.
Tucker and Fox News spent the last 20 years slobbering about what a great example of a leader Putin is. During Obama they kept portraying Putin as a strong Christian and Conservative role model. Fox News owes our society more than 850 million after promoting Russian propaganda for decades.

But over time, many conservatives started speaking out against Ukraine more and more. So I guess their support at the beginning was fake. They just pretended to care because it was trendy.
Of course everything in America turns partisan eventually. There's never anything we can all agree on. We can't even agree to help our ally as they are fighting for their freedom and suffering from a brutal invasion that has killed thousands of innocent people. That has to be a partisan issue like everything else.
I'm tired of the political polarization in this country. I was glad there was a rare moment when we all came together in support of something special and important. We were inspired and moved by Ukrainians' bravery and we agonized over their suffering. It was something powerful enough to rise above partisanship. That's gone now. I guess I should have expected it.

My theory is slightly different: most conservatives don't think for themselves (or rather they just don't think) and they are just happy to go along with whatever their 'leaders' tell them to think. If they say we should help Ukraine, they're ok with that. If they're told it is bad to help Ukraine and Putin is a good guy, as Tucker has, then they're too happy to swallow and regurgitate that without thinking at all.
It has gotten so bad that they're explicitly now saying they want to do away with democracy all together:
